The property is a Georgian building that has been purposely converted into a modern care facility, benefitting from a spacious interior, whilst being large enough to incorporate a number of specialist units and a hairdressing salon.

I've visited my mother's partner 4-5 times over the last couple of months, and we're very pleased that he's where he is.
He's eating more than he ever would at home or in hospital, the staff all know him by name and are very attentive to him, and he's always warm and comfortable when we arrive and
leave.

My partner was transferred to Canterbury House after a few months in hospital - at first, I was anxious as it is not close to where we live and I don't drive. However, the care given far outweighs any misgivings I have had. The staff at Canterbury House are extremely caring and nothing is too much trouble.
The food is good and varied and there is always friendly interaction with all staff. Residents are always clean and have regular haircuts, eye tests and other treatments if wanted.

Mum is settled there. The staff/management are really good with her, even on her challenging days. Quality of the bedroom furniture is poor and her clothes often do not end up back in her room from laundry. It is difficult in a nursing home to get the balance right - but as mum does not suffer with
dementia, I feel that she could be doing more activities/exercise. She often wants to go in the garden (in Summer) but they are not allowed.

I found Canterbury House Nursing Home terrible. Staff abrupt and not approachable. Building layout not good as some rooms out of sight leaving clients vulnerable as not seen. Deputy manager very loud and unsympathetic towards my mother's needs. No entertainment for clients or games notices in 6 weeks.
Food left in front of clients and left to go cold when not assisted. Care very poor and would not recommend this nursing home.

Family were left with little option but to accept this home following a revenge eviction from a previous care home which resulted in a 5 week hospital stay and suffering a stroke in hospital. Regrettably, our experience of the dementia care industry was not improved upon by Canterbury House. The building
itself is more akin to a prison block, very loud acoustics, no activities and low staffing levels aggravated by a clear lack of experience. The overall end of life experience was so obviously lacking from management down, no more so that in the last days. My advice to everybody is pray you do not get dementia.

I cannot thank or praise the staff in the care home enough. They all, without exception, treat the residents with such dignity it is humbling to me. I visit my sister frequently and no matter when I wander in the staff are working hard to fulfil the needs of all the residents.

Canterbury House has been wonderful with my husband. The staff have gone above and beyond in their care for him the nurse on his floor has been so approachable and amazing and keeps me informed of any changes and updates on my husband.

My wife and I had difficulties finding a suitable EMI Nursing Home following my Mum's discharge from a secure mental health ward. It's so difficult finding details of the home with the right level of service, and 2 suitable homes refused her admission due to behavioural concerns. But, once we visited
Canterbury House we were greeted with a 'can do' attitude and her transition from hospital to her ensuite room at Canterbury House couldn't have gone better. Since then we continue to be delighted with the level of service. The staff are really lovely and the nurse always keeps us informed of any issues they are attending to. When we advise of our intention to take her out for lunch, she is always ready and her medications are up to date. We feel reassured that she is safe and well cared for. This is also the first home she has been in (she's been in 2 previous residential homes) when she isn't constantly trying to leave. She seems much happier there which is a big relief to us.

Our Dad spent the last 20 weeks of his life before he recently passed away at this fantastic care home. It was the hardest decision for us to have to make for our Dad, but we were no longer able to provide him with the specialised care he needed. We are so glad that we chose this home where he was treated
with so much kindness and dignity by all the staff. We were involved and kept up to date at all times on his everyday needs. He did seem as happy as he could be and settled when we visited him most days. He was always very clean and very nicely dressed, and we couldn't have asked for any more. We take great comfort that he spent the last weeks of his life with lovely, caring staff who go over and above what is expected of them. The manager and staff of this home are truly marvelous and we would like to thank you all so much for looking after our Dad.

Staff are friendly and nice to speak to. Activities should be on a regular basis or staff to take residents out in wheelchairs for a short walk, stimulating their brains. The garden is wasted space, should be designed with EMI residents in mind - sensory plants, colourful plants and sun catchers. Clothes
are ruined by laundry staff - knitwear is shrunk and we have to dispose of. Clothing - unironed, clothes missing and also seen being worn by another resident (name and room number on labels). Bedding - creased tightly, especially top sheet, looks scruffy. Burnt toast should not be served and is unacceptable and unappetising. Soft palatable food should be given to those requiring it and if on their care plan.
No hand towel in room - ever.
Cold drinks to be in residents' proximity when in their rooms so they can drink when thirsty and not just when it is "time".
Personal presentation is important - tidy, clean clothes, hair combed, shower. People with dementia should be treated with pride and dignity. They rely on carers for this and it should be adhered to. My dad would be mortified if he thought he has been left to walk around in pyjamas, without slippers or dressing gown, or clothes un-ironed and shrunk in the tumble dryer

My dad moved into Canterbury House Care Home three months ago and all the staff have been extremely welcoming to him and all the family. The manager has been particularly helpful and reassuring to us as a family and has gone out of her way to ensure my dad is happy and settled.

My husband became a resident at Canterbury House in April this year. Being an emergency admission, I was unable to visit beforehand and didn't know what to expect. I have been so pleased with the way my husband has been treated and cared for by all the staff. They are so pleasant and cheerful both to
the residents and visitors alike. I am particularly impressed with the nursing staff, who know just what is needed. His room is spotless and tidy, and his appearance is good. Although I would love to have my husband back home with me, I feel he is in the next best environment. I couldn't be more grateful.

My dad was admitted as an emergency in April 2022. We had been looking at residential homes in Conwy, but circumstances changed, and he had to be moved very quickly. We initially had reservations as the building looks forbidding, and my dad had a nasty fall on his first night there. We had no experience
of care homes at all. However, six weeks on, my mum and I are extremely happy with the care he has received. The deputy manager has given lots of her time explaining his condition and how she wants to treat him. The other staff, from carers to orderlies, are helpful and friendly. My dad is occasionally aggressive and difficult, but they still treat him with sympathy and understanding. We are grateful to all for making a difficult process much easier.

My husband has been in Canterbury House Care Home for a few months now. He settled really well from the day he arrived.
The staff have been so caring with him and with us as a family.
It’s really frightening putting your loved one into the care of others. I couldn’t ask for a better team to look

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.704)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.704) out of 10 for Canterbury House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.1 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.120 for Canterbury House is calculated as follows: ( (79 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (10 Poors x 2) + (13 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 117 Ratings = 4.12

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.584 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Canterbury House is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 51 registered maximum number of service users is 10.2. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.2 = 0.784

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
