When approached by a member of staff, my husband responds in a positive manner. This gives me the confidence that he is well treated in my absence. Members of staff also treat me with respect and I feel welcomed whenever I visit.

My mother became a resident 1 year ago at the youngish age of 76 with dementia. We picked this home as we knew that she would have a good quality of life with plenty of stimulation and activities to keep her occupied. The staff have been brilliant and made her feel very happy and included. She has done
much more in the last year, than she has done in a long time, like exercises, cooking, gardening, which can only be a good thing. I had a heavy heart at putting her into care, but I know it has been the best thing for her, emotionally and mentally. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff, and they are all very friendly and caring.

My husband has advanced Mixed Dementia. He had been very unhappy and exhibiting aggressive behaviour in his previous care home.
However, from the minute, he entered Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home, he was completely relaxed and gave no bother at All. That is not to say he has not had his moments,
but, they have been handled in a manner consistent with staff who have an understanding of this condition.
I believe I have a great relationship with the nursing staff. We can talk honestly to one another, and when I have mentioned something amiss regarding day to day regime, I have been listened to and action is taken. Equally, when they have a contrary opinion to mine, they can express that and give their reasoning. This is something I respect.
I would like my husband to be included in more activities, but I understand the difficulties that this would give. Overall I am very grateful that I found this home, and for the care and respect given by all staff to my husband.

Barchester Plas-y-Dderwen Care Home is lovely, the bedrooms with ensuite and immaculate, nice furniture.
The staff are extremely helpful and were lovely with my aunt. Even going out of their way to ask if I needed a drink et cetera.
Very keen and careful regards to COVID.

My father has settled really well his demeanour has improved in all aspects. Has really adapted well to the care home. Has a lot of new interests, activities and bonding with residents and staff. He speaks highly of the home and is cared for in all aspects.

My uncle (a resident) and aunt recently celebrated 70 years of marriage. On the day, the care staff 'went the extra mile' to ensure the day was memorable for them. A few family members were able to join them for coffee and cake, it was a lovely afternoon. It was so kind and thoughtful of the staff.
On previous visits to Plas-y-dderwen, I have always found the staff friendly. The rooms are pleasant and the grounds neat and tidy.

The manager and staff are very friendly, approachable and always keep you informed. Residents are always encouraged to join in activities, which they enjoy and are done regularly. The care is outstanding.

Having previously visited a family friend at the home our family were delighted that there was space for our uncle. It made our day because we don’t think there is another home that can match Plas. When you walk into the home (Covid permitting of course) it looks and smells fresh and clean. We were
unable to physically visit our uncle for some time during the pandemic but this didn’t stop us from communicating with him and we could see via our virtual calls that he was happy and well looked after. The staff have been amazing, looking after everyone and it really feels a happy place for residents but staff as well. Our uncle doesn’t think he’s actually in a home, the last time I visited he remarked that he was enjoying living in this hotel and they even let him help with the gardening! What he was referring to was one of the activities that had been provided for residents. We cannot be happier and we would recommend Plas to anyone who’s considering it.

My uncle has been a resident of Plas-Y-Dderwen for a long while now and I cannot speak highly enough about the staff's commitment to his and other residents wellbeing. It has been a while since we were able to visit due to Covid regulations but, the manager and her staff have been superb in keeping
us updated on how our uncle is, plus we have been able to see him virtually on special calls arranged by the home.
When I was allowed to visit again recently it was nice to see that the home was still as clean and welcoming as it always has been. In tough times the staff have obviously only had one thing on their minds and that is the resident's welfare and this was obvious from the stories my uncle told me of the activities he had been part of during the time we were not able to physically see him. I think his words were this is like home from home except I have plenty of friends and things to keep me occupied. High praise indeed from my uncle.


We would highly recommend this home.

It’s always a pleasure to visit Plas-y-Dderwen, the staff throughout the home are always very welcoming and the home is kept fresh and clean.

Fantastic support at all times to all members of our family.
The carer is very attentive towards Mum and always ensures she is content and warm in the pod.

Amazing home, clean and fresh. Staff are always willing to help and friendly. The manager is full of life, very helpful and knowledgeable.

The overall cost is very high. The number of "Extras" charged is annoying and unnecessary considering how high the overall fee is. Not always very good at keeping us informed about any problems or decisions. The staff and management are friendly. The activities for the residents is very good and creates
a community feel, however, Mum is not able to take part.

In our experience, we can not praise the staff at the home enough. They all have been wonderful to our father. From the moment he entered the home in October, he was treated with great care. We have a great rapport with all the staff, management and carers as well as the nursing staff. The entertainment
they provide in the home has made such a difference to our father; great stimulation to his mind.

The activities coordinator went above and beyond, lending my mother in law his own phone for us to be able to video call her. It was particularly nice during the lockdown, but actually will be useful going forward too as we live six hours away so visiting isn’t easy. Sometimes we would be on the phone
for nearly an hour so it was really very kind and thoughtful.

My name is Sharon Herbert and I am the Senior General Manager for Barchester based at Plas y Dderwen.


I qualified as a Registered Nurse in 1994 and joined Barchester in 2015, firstly working at Plas Y Dderwen before supporting other regions for 4 years helping to improve quality and resident experience. I returned to Plas Y Dderwen in July 2022, whereby as a team we are passionate about the residents that we support and the experience they have whilst in our care. I am committed to a high standard of service delivery, ensuring that the staff also meet the requirements in terms of training and adhering to the Barchester Values of Respect, Integrity, Passion, Empowerment and Responsibility. I have recently started here at Plas y Dderwen in the role of Clinical Deputy Manager. I have a degree in adult general nursing and have been a qualified nurse since 2012. My nursing background is in a nursing home setting. I have experience in elderly care and young adults with acquired brain injuries, learning difficulties and complex needs. I moved to Wales in September 2022 and joined Plas y Dderwen in October 2022. Working with different units was something I wasn’t familiar with but the staff were supportive. I have been nursing for about 46 years and the last 20 years have been working with residents living with Dementia. I work within the advanced Dementia community and I really enjoy working here in Plas y Dderwen, the staff are friendly and are always happy to help.

I am a nurse who came to work at Plas Y Dderwen eleven years ago. I had previously worked for the NHS for 30+ years as a psychiatric nurse. I work nights on Teifi unit and love my job. I have met the most amazing people during my time here and consider it a privilege to care for people living their journey through dementia and its challenges. The staff I work with are well trained and experienced in delivering a high standard of individualised care. The home is a friendly comfortable environment with plenty of trips and activities going on. The management are very supportive of all the staff and their various needs. Training is ongoing constantly. I particularly enjoy the autonomy and responsibility of managing the unit on nights.
