Whilst looking for a placement suitable for my mother, I came across this absolute gem of a place. The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home is everything I could have wished for. The staff are just lovely, friendly and welcoming with surroundings and facilities are all as you would hope for. It's a very
difficult thing to deal with having to put a loved one into a care facility, but The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home staff have made it an altogether easier thing to do with their homely and friendly approach to care. I would happily recommend that you look at this lovely home.

Reply from Catrin Fletcher, Operations Director at The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home

Thank you very much for this review and we are delighted that both you and your mum are happy with the care and facilities at The Hollies. I will pass on your comments to the staff who will be very pleased with your comments.

My Mother is now living in The Hollies care home. The whole family are very pleased with the care she receives and the manner in which the care is given. She is always treated with dignity and respect. The staff are very friendly and helpful and it is always a pleasure to visit my mother as you are
always made welcome. My mother is happy in her own way. I have worked in a care home for 15 years before I retired so I know when I see a good home with excellent care and The Hollies is that.

Reply from Bik Choudhary, Company Director at The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home

A more varied menu with bigger portions, quality products and fresh veg.
More assistance for residents with feeding problems.
Better quality bedding.
More day trips.

Reply from Lisa Jones, Home Manager at The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home

As manager of the home, I wish to make the following comments in response to this review. We have an excellent chef here in the home who is constantly varying the menu in response to views that are expressed in our residents' meetings. We cater for the residents that wish to have an alternative meal to those that are on the daily menu. Individual choice is extremely important to us here in the home. New bed linen has recently been purchased, however, residents are welcome to bring into the home their own bedding which a large number do in order to make their rooms more personalised.
We offer an extensive activities program with arts and crafts, quizzes, board games, baking, reminiscence and entertainers coming into the home on a weekly basis. Fortnightly trips out of the home are facilitated for all those who wish to attend. Family members are also welcome to take their loved ones out of the home and this can be arranged with myself or my deputy. We aim to offer an excellent service at all times and respond to all concerns quickly and efficiently.

My father continues to do well in The Hollies, and I remain extremely satisfied with the quality of care and attention he receives. He has now been resident for 3 and a half years; he is in better health, at the age of 103, than when he arrived. The staff are friendly, supportive and totally committed
to the welfare of the residents. There is a varied programme of activities, the food is good and the manager is efficient, but very approachable. I can recommend The Hollies.

Reply from Bik Choudhary, Director at The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home

Many thanks for your kind comments, we are very happy your father has done so well with us, he remains an important part of the homes community. The Hollies remains a flagship home in the South Wales area and the hard working team and management continue to strive to keep it that way going forwards.

Our mother has been a resident in the nursing home for several years. Throughout this period we have been impressed by the dedication of the staff. They have treated our mother with dignity and respect. Not only have the staff supported our mother but have also supported and welcomed family and friends.
For the last two nights we have stayed at the home. This has given us the opportunity to observe the night time staff. The care has been of an excellent standard. All members of staff have a positive attitude and have shared moments of joyous laughter with my mother and us, celebrating life with all it's ups and downs. I have written this on behalf of my brother, sister and myself.

I cannot explain how happy I am with mum's care at The Hollies. I never imagined how professional and caring the staff could be. The daily routine is always filled with numerous activities and most important my mum is happy. Special recommendation should go to the activity co-ordinator, she is an angel.
Also all the other carers are so professional. I always feel relieved to leave mum knowing she is so well looked after. "Thank you, The Hollies".

I have an aunt resident here. She finds it a lovely, friendly caring home. The staff are helpful and the management in particular are very approachable when you need to chat or if you have any concerns. Thoroughly recommend them.

My father has been in The Hollies for over a year. I have only encountered lovely people who are happy to make my father's last years as good as they can be. All staff, cleaners, cooks, carers and management are kind, courteous, have a sense of humour and make up a strong team. I had to go away for
a month and everyone gave dad extra time to chat and tried to keep his spirits up, even when he can be rather hard work.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.099)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.099) out of 10 for The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 6 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.817 for The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home is calculated as follows: ( (61 Excellents x 5) + (7 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 71 Ratings = 4.817

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.282 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Hollies Nursing & Residential Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 44 registered maximum number of service users is 8.8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.8 = 0.682

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
