Gibraltar Nursing Home is a purpose-built, nursing and residential home, set on a hillside in Monmouth, with panoramic views across the Kymin and Wye Valley.

The state-of-the-art home forms part of a care village and has landscaped gardens that link from the care centre into the retirement homes. Facilities include a hydrotherapy pool, internet, cafe, wellness therapy rooms, cinema, beauty salon and a library to name just some of the services available on-site.

Gibraltar specialises in dementia care and has a team of care staff who strive to deliver high-quality care to all residents at the home through personalised care plans and a varied programme of activities and events at the home.

The team at Gibraltar have worked tirelessly to undertake intensive training, which has resulted in a revolutionary model of care being implemented at the home. My husband could not have been cared for in a better way. He was shown and dealt with great love and respect in every way. As relatives, we were shown great respect and could not have had better attention and care. All the carers knew their responsibilities and performed their duties with sensitivity
and great care. Thank you for your care in every way.

Lovely care home, staff caring. Lots of activities to keep family members stimulated. Visiting family members always made welcome.
Lovely communal area called Pillars allows family and friends of residents to visit outside of rooms.

I am really impressed by the care provided at Gibraltar Nursing Home. The staff have been wonderful in looking after my dad. He always seems to be doing fun activities, like playing games or spending time with animals. The facilities and grounds are brilliant - clean, homey and in nature.

Really impressed. Lovely staff and nothing is ever too much trouble for them. That includes the back-of-house office staff, who are really supportive and helpful in guiding you through unknown territory. A huge thanks for all you did for my friend while he was with you.

Mum has been a resident at Gibraltar House for a while now and I think because of the ‘Street’ names, she feels she is in her own home with staff and other residents being friends and neighbours. This is great, far better than feeling she needs to go home. Staff at all levels are very friendly and approachable
keeping family well informed as to what is occurring with Mum and at Gibraltar House. Myself and Mum particularly enjoyed the Christmas Day lunch organised. It was great to be able to share the day with Mum and was a very happy day. We thank all involved in the organisation required to ensure so. We look forward to participating in future events with Mum. As a family, it is fabulous to be able to meet with Mum in your ‘Pillars’ cafe. Mum can often be found down there enjoying a cuppa and her favourite cakes with some of her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We can also get sandwiches if we need from your lovely kitchen staff. Thanks to all the staff for looking after Mum so well for us.

My mother has been at Gibraltar Care Village for several years. She is a very nervous and anxious lady, but the care she has received whilst there is outstanding. She is kept occupied with craft work and singing and is extremely happy, so thank you to all the carers.

I cannot thank the care staff enough for the care and dignity they showed my mum. She went to live at Gibraltar in December 2022. She had dementia and was bed bound. Mum settled in well, the staff obviously made her feel safe and comfortable and that was good enough for me. My dad ended up a resident
too, as he went into hospital for an operation and also went into Gibraltar for respite. When it was time for him to go home, he didn't want to. He wanted to stay at Gibraltar to be with Mum (they were next door to each other). But, sadly my mum sadly passed away 28th August 2023 and the staff paid extra attention to make sure my dad was ok. All staff are caring and compassionate. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be many activities, unless certain carers are on, then there is some sort of entertainment. The cleaner on floor two is lovely, management are lovely and if there is anything that is bothering you, just go and talk to them and it will be sorted. This is a lovely home.

Staff are excellent, responsive and communicative. They have been under significant pressure during the last two and a half years. They have done their utmost to reduce the impact of Covid restrictions and the alienation of residents from relatives. Covid has also reduced activities and when this reduces,
staff will be able to resume. However, Covid appears to remain a clear threat at present. I remind myself constantly that the staff are doing something I could not.

Overall care and carers are good but the continuity of care could improve as the staff are often moved to other floors of the home. Elderly and vulnerable people need continuity as they get to know their carers and trust them. Also, the carers know how the residents like things done and also any quirks
they may have. It can be upsetting to find those they trust have moved and they have to get used to new carers and nurses.

I have nothing but praise for all the love and attention offered to my parents. Sadly we lost Mum in March - staff attended the funeral, and extra attention given to Dad since has been amazing. Every member of staff, from reception to domestic, is amazing.

Steve, thank you so much for your wonderful comments. It goes without saying that your mum is so missed by us all at Gibraltar, but we are still so lucky to be able to care for your dad and continue to make him smile. He is so lucky to have a lovely, caring family. Thank you for bringing such joy to Gibraltar every time you visit.

This is an amazing home. Staff show such love and care to all of the family members. My mother was a resident here for twelve and a half years and was truly loved by all. This gave me great comfort when I couldn’t be with her. Unfortunately, Mum passed away in May and I have to say that the end-of-life
care she received was awe-inspiring. I will always be indebted to the wonderful staff. I wish the two new leaders all the very best and I know that the home is in very good hands. Thank you all.

Avoid at all costs. Reception and 'communal' areas are like a ghost town. His bedroom was not particularly clean - drink rings on tables, a substance on the bed ('that's ok its thickener'), no TV. Corridors look tired and grubby, with a radio station playing clearly to the staff's tastes rather than
residents'. No garden, v little parking.
For the 8 weeks he was there, staff didn't get him out of bed to use the toilet (he was immobile, not incontinent), and only began to sit him out in a chair after a physio saw him and shook things up. There were no activities, and rarely someone on reception, but if needed - eg. to be released from the building! - always plenty of staff smoking and chatting outside.
Many care staff were very good and cared, but were understaffed. On a number of occasions, he waited over an hr to get a response to his buzzer. Thankfully in a new home, all changed instantly - he was got up to use the toilet, up in a chair, up for meals, offered activities daily.

Hi,

We’re extremely sorry and upset to hear of your experience with our home. We want to assure you we have taken your feedback seriously and have investigated the matters you raise.

Unfortunately, at the time your father was staying with us we experienced a covid 19 breakout. Our infection control protocols, in accordance with Government guidance necessitated the prioritisation of safety and this entailed isolating family members in their own rooms. We do not wish to use covid as an excuse for not meeting our own operating standards. However, the challenges faced required many human decisions to be made at speed; some of which, upon reflection may have been done differently.

We can’t express how devastating it was to disrupt our usual routines, but at the heart of it all, the safety of our family members remained the top priority.

If you have any further feedback about how we can improve our home, please do get in touch directly by email.

Best Wishes, The Gibraltar Team.

Excellent in many respects, but one strong recommendation. If you have a very deaf resident prone to losing his one outlet to communication PLEASE would the person in immediate charge take responsibility for looking after said hearing aid so it's available for when he has visitors - even if it's a spare.
It's been allowed to drift for our friend and the results are not good.

Gibraltar House is definitely a 'care' home.
All of the staff 'care' about the residents and their families.
The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated.
The staff are attentive and have treated my parents with great respect and dignity.
They are all so very helpful, nothing is too much trouble.
I
am so grateful and thankful to have found a safe 'home' for my very special parents.
God bless you.

Food is not always cooked properly. Often late and just warm. Quality of food poor: on a few occasions ran out of some food and coffee! Care is not consistent and varies to quite a degree. Cleaning is very poor. Bedside tables often dirty. Strong smell on some streets. Rooms need decorating top to bottom.
Very difficult to speak to management as not freely available. Phone calls not returned. The Drinks jug that is in the room is NOT always refilled I have had to ask for this. Call response is very very slow.

Mum is well looked after.
Mostly kept clean 8/10
There appears to be a lack of regular activities. Whilst things are put on the table for people to do, there appears to be little encouragement to stimulate people to participate.
Nursing care is also good. Sometimes, people have to wait a long time
to be taken to the toilet due to a lack of staff.
Invoicing is atrocious. I have had emails demanding we pay up for a deficit when my mum has been £100 in credit. My mum has been invoiced my another lady of the same name.
We have asked for monthly statements and they always show a minus, when the minus is for them not my mum.
It never looks like a bank statement. It is very confusing.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.673)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.673) out of 10 for Gibraltar Nursing Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.605 for Gibraltar Nursing Home is calculated as follows: ( (57 Excellents x 5) + (18 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 81 Ratings = 4.605

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.068 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Gibraltar Nursing Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 95 registered maximum number of service users is 19. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 19 = 0.368

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
