This nursing home has developed serious problems and, at least for the time being, I would not recommend placing an elderly relative in their care. Our mother arrived at Glaslyn Court in Oct 22. At that time, the home had a good reputation. As a family, we were pleased with the level of care and the
facilities. However, in 2023, we became aware of serious issues including the sacking of the manager, many trusted staff deciding to leave, a high staff turn over, many agency staff on site and reports to us by the staff present of bullying by the new management. This was followed by two failed CIW inspections where inspectors found serious issues. The home was, as a result, banned from taking in new residents.
We visited in the middle of the day and found the home understaffed and with our mother asleep in her room, apparently heavily sedated. Her meal was sat by her side, untouched and with no effort having been made to persuade her to eat.
We moved mum to an alternative home.

Reply from Ingrid James Wright, Director at Glaslyn Court

It should be noted that many care homes and NHS hospitals in the area rely on Agency staff to ensure safe staffing. Staffing ratios are monitored and scrutinised by the Local Health Boards and Care Inspectorate Wales as part of their inspection process. Glaslyn Court has been monitored by CIW and Monmouthshire and at no time were staffing levels assessed as being understaffed. We take the allegation of bullying very seriously. No formal complaints were made against the management by the staff. Should such a complaint have existed, it would have been investigated and appropriate measures undertaken. Glaslyn Court has experienced challenges, but with the support of a newly appointed experienced manager and the local authority we are confident that the care home is meeting expectations. Due to an improved CIW inspection report and monitoring process, the care home is now open to new residents

My granny has been at the home for over two years and I can't stress how great the staff have been with her. They always make a huge fuss of her and make her feel very comfortable - and her hair always looks so lovely! It makes me feel so relieved to know that my granny is being taken care of in such
a great facility. Thank you!

My family and I were forced into making the very difficult decision to have our father placed into a nursing care home. It was made more difficult because the hospital had requested his release from their care and the current situation of the Covid-19 virus. Glaslyn Court was selected by a telephone
call and as much research as possible under current circumstances. What a blessing it was. From the first telephone conversation with the nurse on duty that day to the day of his passing, my father and ourselves were treated with so much compassion and care that I have only praise for all the staff employees at the home. If you have to make the very difficult decision, as we did, you can do so with great confidence in this excellent care home. Thank you is not enough.

Mum liked the freedom that she was allowed to wander around the main living areas and enjoy the wonderful character of the house. Mum was a very quiet, private lady and enjoyed being able to sit in one of the two conservatories or one of the two living rooms or garden. We were allowed to prepare her
bedroom with her possessions and when we asked for a small shelf to be put on the wall, the maintenance staff got onto it straight away. The activities coordinator was amazing and put so much effort into mums daily life.
I cannot thank everyone there enough. The owners have produced a wonderful, caring environment, the manager is always there with a listening ear and the staff are just fantastic. All of the team show great compassion, patience and courage. Mum did not want to go to a nursing home but due to her illness she had no choice. I am so very pleased this was the home mum lived in and I cannot thank everyone enough.

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 1.8 (1.750) out of 10 for Glaslyn Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 1.8 out of 5 from 1 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 0.0 out of 5 from 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 1.750 for Glaslyn Court is calculated as follows: ( (1 Satisfactorys x 3) + (7 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 12 Ratings = 1.75

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 0 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Glaslyn Court is based on 0 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) =

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 82 registered maximum number of service users is 16.4. 0 Positive Reviews ÷ 16.4 = 0

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
