Winner of the Scotland Care Home of the Year Accolade in the Caring UK Awards 2023, the team at Allanbank create so many opportunities to enrich their residents’ lives at the home, which has stunning views of the countryside and the River Nith.

The team create their own musicals, like The Sound of Music and Sister Act, with full make up and fantastic costumes, the residents love singing along. The team often perform in the home's car park for the local community to enjoy.

There are regular swimming sessions at the local hydrotherapy pool, as well as tai chi classes.

The entire team embrace activities. One of the carers is a talented artist so runs art sessions with the residents. She even organised an exhibition for their families, transforming the home’s bar into a gallery.

Residents who love cooking spend time with the home’s chef, who helps them to recreate their favourite recipes, which are added to Allanbank’s Recipe Book.

The local football club run a reminiscence group, where the residents meet fellow fans and former players.

The home has a fantastic relationship with the Theatre Royal – which donates front row tickets for residents to enjoy performances.

The team are passionate about keeping their residents connected to their local community, so organise regular pub lunches, visits to garden centres, church coffee mornings, animal farms and community high teas and dances.

The residents can also enjoy regular appointments with a mobile hairdresser in the home’s hair and nail salon.

Allanbank is made up of smaller individual communities, with cosy lounge and dining areas, which gives it a warm, family feel. There are enclosed courtyard gardens, with wheelchair-friendly pathways and raised planters, where the residents enjoy growing their own produce.

And the home-cooked food is a real highlight, with home baking every day for afternoon tea.

I’m very happy with the care that my dad receives at Allanbank Care Home. After a “settling in” period he is integrating very well with the staff and other residents. The staff are very friendly, always have time for a chat with dad and are very attentive to his needs.
Dad has enjoyed trips out and
is taken swimming every week which he enjoys immensely and has been very beneficial to his general well-being. The staff also provide activities for the residents such as dominos, karaoke, music sessions and arts and crafts.
Any issues that have arisen have been dealt with in a timely manner and resolved satisfactorily.
I would have no hesitation in recommending Allanbank to anyone looking for a place for their loved one where they would be treated with kindness, dignity and respect.

I'm very happy with the care Mum receives at Allanbank. She is treated with kindness by all staff members. Usually, I only visit at weekends and sometimes there is only one care worker in the unit which isn't ideal. Mum managed to get out of the care home twice but since then a notice has been put on
the external door to remind people to make sure it's closed properly. There are lots of activities for residents Mum is taken swimming weekly.

My wife was admitted to Allanbank eighteen months ago, six and a half years after she was diagnosed with dementia. She immediately settled in the home and never mentioned coming home. I have found the staff very caring, my wife thinks she is in there to help and asks other residents how they are and
if she can help them. She takes part in numerous activities provided and has been on trips away from the home. The staff have always made me feel welcome and kept me informed on how my wife is doing. The home is very clean and well maintained.

It's been six months since my dad became a resident at Allanbank, we had a few teething troubles, which management resolved quickly. The staff in the unit are amazing, everyone is very friendly, they make a fuss of my dad, nothing is a bother for them and I feel I can speak to them if I have any worries.
I am contacted promptly regarding any concerns they have with my dad. I would recommend Allanbank to anyone, from the manager right down to the nurses, carers kitchen staff, domestics and maintenance personnel they all have a smile and a friendly word.

The care my late father had was exceptional. I know I can speak on behalf of my family as a whole. From the day my dad arrived to his passing, the care he received was fantastic. Every member of staff was motivated and took such care of my father.

There are too few staff who are experienced. The few experienced staff are good but it is clear they are stretched far too thin. The residents are left in their rooms far too long particularly in the evening. There is difficulty in finding any staff after 7 pm. The staff (with some exceptions) seem
to not be bothered to engage with residents confined to their rooms. The younger staff are nice enough but totally inexperienced and simply not up to the task. My wife has been in the establishment for about a month and all I have heard regarding the reputation of the care sector in general is sadly and unfortunately too true.

Our son is in Allanbank Care Home. He is getting well looked after. The management and care staff are all great with them. Everyone gets on well with him and he is very happy in Allanbank Care Home. They cannot do enough for him and he is coming on leaps and bounds since going there. His dad and I are
very pleased with everything the staff and carers are doing. Cannot fault them at all. They are very helpful.

Our overall view of Allanbank Care Home in Dumfries is outstanding. The care and attention to detail never ceased to amaze us. During the difficult times when staff were off with covid and people were working long hours to cover, the standard of care our mum received did not decline at all which is
a credit not only to all staff but how the home is managed. Communication is so much better now and we were always kept in the loop. Mum's needs were well supported by the skilful and highly trained team. Honestly can't thank everyone enough for what they have done for mum while she was there. Keep up the good work.

Allanbank has great staff, very thorough, no issues. Mum is very comfortable and she is safe and secure. It’s very clean and tidy. I don’t have any worries, she is getting great medical attention and would recommend it to anyone.

My wife is treated with compassion, kindness, patience, and dignity. I am contacted immediately if she has any problem such as a fall or a health issue that is giving concern. There has been a problem of poor contact by phone with management until recently. A newly installed phone menu system has greatly

Absolutely amazing staff. Showing genuine care and empathy. Communication is excellent. The home itself is clean, well laid out with beautiful gardens and views over the river. I cannot thank them enough at Allanbank for putting my mind at ease. I know that my Aunt will be safe and well cared for.

We moved our brother into Allanbank in May 2021 from another care home. It has taken a while for him to settle down but can honestly say that because of the caring, kind, and understanding staff that can't do enough for him, that he looks the best I have seen him in quite a while. The professionalism
of the staff starts at the care home front door with the covid team. He is definitely in the correct place for his needs.

The overall standard is good. The staff are caring and patient; giving my husband reassurance and kindness. They are attentive to relatives' concerns. I am informed of any falls, accidents, or changes to medication. The staff do not hesitate to contact a GP if they have residents with worrying health
issues. Catering staff make a lot of effort to cater for my husband’s pescatarian diet. Because of Covid, I have had little experience of management, but I have been able to contact them by telephone. Only a couple of negative comments. The rooms are good and kept clean, but could do with a bit of decorating, which I appreciate isn’t easy when they are never vacated for any length of time. Sometimes it takes a while for requests/questions to be answered, which is likely due to staff shortages, which many organisations are experiencing currently. Neither of these comments deflects from the excellent care that my husband is receiving.

I feel my mum is safer in the nursing home rather than being by herself at her house. She seems to have settled and is quite happy. Up til now Allanbank has been COVID free and must be a bonus for staff and residents.

Staff are very friendly no issues with the home or carers my dad feels safe in the home which is good. Meals seem to be good. Never complains about them, staff are good with him and nothing seems to be a bother to them when he buzzes for help.

Occasionally a severe lack of communication between members of staff. Mum recently had a fall and thought Mum had broken ribs but were reluctant to get her checked at hospital until I insisted they call an ambulance.

My uncle resided in the unit for two years and was always treated with respect and dignity. The staff genuinely cared for him and were always professional (however, didn't fault to make my uncle and us feel like family). The staff were always kind, understanding and accommodating. In the last days of
his life, the staff showed genuine love and care for him. As well as making sure we as a family were ok.
