Since my dad moved in during Covid, and after a tough year, I'm happy to be seeing the service stabilise and improvements being made.
I'm confident that things are now moving in the right direction.

A lovely atmosphere, everyone is very friendly and helpful. There is a happy atmosphere here in this home, I feel like it's a home from home. It's always clean and fresh. I am so pleased I have made this move.

My brother got a place at Goldilea Care Home with only 2 days' notice, so was quite a shock as we thought it would be a while for a suitable place, due to increased falls my brother was unsafe and had lost his confidence. I found the staff very helpful and went above and beyond to accommodate my brother
so that his transition would go smoothly. The relative meeting was very beneficial to me and I realised just how much the present manager was improving things and communicating all plans to us. I feel very valued as a relative and feel staff are there to care for my brother but interested in me and my family. An activity worker has started and there are various events. My son and I thoroughly enjoyed a sing-song in April and I look forward to many other events taking place. My brother is safe and I am happy with the care. My brother has clothes laundered and has regular input from nurses, occupational health as well as hairdressers and podiatrists. Spacious clean home.

Thank you for your review and kind words. We are delighted that you are so pleased with the care your brother is receiving at Goldielea. We will pass on your compliments to the team. Best wishes.

When my husband was first admitted to Goldielea in May 2021 they had a very good manager. Sadly she left. After that Goldielea went through a very difficult time mainly due to the incompetence of the succession of managers. As a result of all this atrocious management the home received a very bad report
from the Care Commission. There was a lot of unrest with both staff and relatives and a lot of the staff walked out. They had real problems recruiting staff. But since the present manager has been in post the home has radically improved. The embargo on admissions has been lifted and the whole atmosphere has changed. All the staff are extremely helpful and obliging. My husband is very settled there and he loves the staff and they appear to love him. This is very important because it was a very difficult decision to have him admitted so it means the world to me to see him happy. The staff are extremely accommodating with any requests I make.

Thank you very much for your review. We are delighted that you have recognised the improvements that have taken place and great news that your husband is so happy at Goldielea. Best wishes.

My mum has been a resident at Goldilea for two and a half years. She settled in really well and is still happy with all aspects of her care, as am I. There have been some concerns regarding management and staff employment, this appears to be more settled now but it has taken some time for this to happen.
Because of this some good staff left the home and there was a period of uncertainty. I do notice that there are still bank staff helping out at times which I feel is detrimental to continuity, however all the staff I have met have been very good. Mum gets on really well with all of the staff and they do seem to have built up a rapport with her. Mum is happy with her room and it is generally kept nice and tidy. Mum enjoys her food and her preferences are catered for. Her clothes are laundered and there are no issues with the service provided. All of the staff know mum well now and she likes to have a wee blether with them all. On a nice day, Mum can sit out in the garden if she wishes.

Reply from Paul Lawson, National Sales Manager at Goldielea Residential Care Home

Thank you very much for your review and it is great to hear that your dear mum is happy and settled at Goldielea. We appreciate that there was a period where some staff changed which was necessary to move the home forward but it is reassuring that you are now aware of a more stable staffing and management team led by our very experienced home manager who has made some really positive improvements which are continuing apace. Thank you again and best wishes.

Poor communication with staff and relatives re changes having taken place already with the specialist dementia unit. Unit door left open to connect with the main house, how does that keep people with advanced dementia safe? Staff skilled in dementia care pulled from dementia care to general care without
fully knowing all the residents and their needs. How is that safe practice?

Reply from Paul Lawson, National Sales Manager at Goldielea Residential Care Home

Hello Gail. Thank you very much for your feedback. We appreciate your high score for staff and would like to reassure you that every team member at Goldielea completes mandatory dementia training as part of their induction process. In addition, we are lucky to have some very experienced dementia specialists in the care home and they are sharing their knowledge and expertise with the less experienced members of the team to ensure that no matter what resident they are engaging with they are confident and able to deliver quality person-centred care. We are pleased to have progressed our recruitment well and not to have to use agency staff as often as previously which helps all staff to get to know all residents. Although the units remain separated the door is open to allow the team to move where and when they are required and to utilise the resources and experience on every shift. Thanks again for your useful feedback and apologies if changes hadn't been communicated effectively.

My dad has lived in this care home for the past 4 and a half years. He initially moved in there with my stepmother and was encouraged to spend as much time as possible together. The staff were completely aware of the different personalities and individual needs of them both which was clearly seen in
the care delivery. My stepmother, unfortunately, died a year after admission but the staff thoroughly focussed on my dad and supported him throughout his time of grief. Although my dad was not the easiest of residents, the staff continued to ensure he was diligently looked after and fed back to the family any areas of concern they may have had. Even if we had any little complaints, the staff worked with us, ensuring his comfort and safety at all times. My dad sadly passed away on the 30th of August 2022. I couldn't thank the staff enough for the care and attention shown throughout his last weeks of life. Thank you. You are all a great team. Anyone would be proud to work with you.

Although having had to make the difficult decision to put my father into a care home I have to say that having him placed in Goldlelea has been a very good choice for the family. (The home was recommended to us by someone who also has a parent in the home).
He is very content, well looked after and
seems to get on very well with everyone. The staff and management I have to say are first class and that's what really makes the difference and gives us all peace of mind. The home itself is dated but it is clean, warm and comfortable and in a very nice setting. I am told the food is very good and plenty of it which again is fantastic. There doesn't seem to be more than a couple of hours in between meals and coffee/tea and cake!
So, all in all, we are very glad that he is staying at Goldielea. A great choice for everyone.

Mum (aged 90) has now been a resident for almost 6 months. She has settled in very well to her new surroundings. She misses all her friends from home but now enjoys the company of some of the other residents. She also participates in most of the activities organised every week and has won the weekly
quiz on occasions. Mum also enjoys the company of the caring nurses and carers at Goldielea, (they make a fuss of her) which she appreciates.
I too appreciate everything that the home does for Mum, knowing she is safe and cared for stops me from worrying about her health and well being. On my regular visits, she is always telling me about the activities that she has been involved with, which I am glad to see she is being stimulated and made to use her faculties - not just sitting in a chair every day watching TV!
Earlier this month the home laid on a bonfire and fireworks display for the residents and their families which was very well attended, providing soup and hot dogs for a small donation.

Just like to say how excellent Goldielea have dealt with things in this pandemic we are in just now. It was a very tough time especially at Christmas as this was my parent's first apart for about 60 years. Even though it was impossible for them to be together you made it possible for them to wish each
other a Merry Christmas and this made my mum's day. We as a family would recommend the staff and home to anyone looking to have their loved ones cared for and held at such high importance from staff and the management.

I cannot praise the care that my Dad receives from all of the staff at Goldielea enough. Lockdown and not being able to see him has been even tougher but what makes it bearable is knowing that his extended family at Goldielea provides Dad with the genuine care and friendship that makes us feel that
he is in the best place possible to support him and us through both Dads dementia. Thank you.

Whilst providing care during Covid has proved very challenging, there was a total disconnect between management/nursing staff and relatives. Furthermore, when making enquiries there were mixed messages about the resident’s condition and communication was extremely poor.

Ultimately there were unexplained

delays in recognising and responding to the severity of deterioration in resident’s condition combined with a lack of evidence of appropriate intervention.

Overall during Covid, it is important to stress how care home staff become relatives eyes and ears, particularly when visiting is ceased. In this regard not only to monitor closely, but management need to take responsibility to communicate back to relatives regularly and timely.

Reply from Paul Lawson, Customer Service Manager at Goldielea Residential Care Home

Thank you for your review. As you know, these concerns were brought to our attention in July last year and we quickly conducted a full internal investigation. The detailed results of the investigation, along with a sincere apology, were sent to you in writing on 7th August and the home manager also spoke to you on the telephone at this time. As a care home, we have learned many things throughout this pandemic and feedback from service users has been an integral element to allow us to make improvements and maintain our high standards. Our excellent reviews on carehome.co.uk are from families using our service and are testament to the high levels of care and communication we have with our service users. We fully understand the frustrations the restrictions in visiting have placed on all of our families and that not seeing loved ones for an extended period of time can be very emotional. Again, we apologise that we did not meet your expectations and pass on our thoughts and best wishes.

My mother went into Goldielea just five days before lockdown began. This has obviously been an extremely difficult time for everyone in that we were unable to take her there and settle her in. However, the manager and her team have done a wonderful job of helping her to settle. The staff are all lovely
and extremely helpful. They have helped my mother with her phone and iPad so that we can stay in contact with her, and have facilitated Skype and Zoom sessions. They're caring and very patient with the residents, and have done their best to help make sure that we can stay in contact during the time that we have not been able to visit.
The only negative point (which is beyond their control) is that both wifi and mobile reception are limited in that area, and at a time when we can't visit, we do rely particularly on those. Fortunately, we have managed to have a fixed landline in her room now which has made speaking to her much easier.
Overall we are very happy with Goldielea. Many thanks to the manager.

My father-in-law has been resident at Goldielea now for a little under 18 months, in which time he has received constant outstanding professional care from a team of highly motivated and dedicated caregivers. From residential to EMI, to nursing - continuity in excellence is the standard at Goldielea.
From our very first phone contact with the tremendously warm, compassionate and empathetic manager, to our very first visit to view the home, it was abundantly clear to my wife and I that Goldielea doesn't just provide exceptional care to residents but also gives vital continued support and reassurance to associated family members in what can only be described as unprepared for and truly challenging times that lie ahead when a loved one reaches the point of necessary care home admission. Goldielea definitively sets the standard for all other care homes to follow.
Beautiful idyllic surroundings. Outstanding leadership. Heartwarming dedicated staff throughout. We're forever indebted.

Goldielea Home has welcomed my mum and settled her into her new home with care and attention to her as a private lady, who needed quiet encouragement and respect in her declining dementia. The home have welcomed the whole family as we have adjusted to the move, answering the many questions and reassuring

My aunt had lived on her own for over 40 years, sometimes only seeing one person in a week, so was very nervous about the idea of going into a home with lots of people, but - for her physical and mental safety, she moved to Goldielea October 2019. This was not an easy decision for any of us including
my aunt, but I am the nearest to Goldielea living on the north side of Edinburgh, the other nieces, Yorkshire and Leicestershire - just too far away for us to support her properly in her own home.
What a relief! The staff are fabulous, well trained, and genuinely care, with most of the staff being there a long time, they speak to all the residents with respect and kindness without being ingratiating. This attitude comes from the top and the manager has been available at all times as well to support us.
I am a retired health professional working in the NHS and private sectors for over 30 years and can be quite blunt, but if I had to be in a care home - Goldielea would be my choice

Current Review Score: 8.5 (8.508)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.5 (8.508) out of 10 for Goldielea Residential Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.256 for Goldielea Residential Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (48 Excellents x 5) + (20 Goods x 4) + (5 Satisfactorys x 3) + (5 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 82 Ratings = 4.256

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.252 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Goldielea Residential Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 46 registered maximum number of service users is 9.2. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 9.2 = 0.652

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
