A stunning listed building with period features, Camilla House is a beautiful home. But it’s the team, several of whom have been with the home for over 10 years, which make it really special.

Passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, they organise so many wonderful activities and experiences for them to enjoy. From rides around Edinburgh on a trishaw and animal therapy visits, to baking and pamper sessions, with manicures and hand massages.

The local community are embraced into life at Camilla House. Children from the local nursery and dance school are regular visitors, as are community fitness instructors, who run gentle exercise sessions.

The residents love to hear performances from the local dementia choir and enjoy regular church services in the home, as well as attending the church’s friendship café. Every week the mobile hairdresser visits the home’s salon, for appointments with the residents. There are also regular visits from the chiropodist and optician, as well as weekly GP visits.

And there are trips galore in the home’s minibus, from the cinema, theatres and playhouse, to the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the local bird centre, Portobello Beach and trips on the Rathro Barge and Queen’s Ferry.

Mealtimes are a highlight of the day with the home’s award-winning chef, who has been with Camilla House for over 10 years and has won several awards in Sanctuary Care’s MasterChef competition. The residents enjoy delicious, traditional home-cooked meals, with freshly baked cakes for afternoon tea. This summer they have enjoyed growing their own produce in the home’s secure garden, which they harvested to use in the kitchen.

With bay windows and high ceilings, the lounges and dining rooms are beautiful, light and airy spaces to relax and spend time with loved ones. There is also a conservatory, which can be used for family celebrations and private dining.

I'm writing this on behalf of my dad. His wife has been a resident for two years and she's very happy there. The staff are lovely and they have also been very helpful to him which is really appreciated. The food is second to none which is not always the case with care homes and we cannot fault it in
any way. What a difference it's made to both my dad's wife and my dad's lives because they were really struggling (especially my dad because he couldn't manage to look after her any longer) The care and understanding she's received is excellent.

My sister has been in Camilla House for three years. She had a stroke and is now disabled, she has dementia and is visually impaired.
As a family, we are very happy with the care that she receives. She has a lot of personal care issues and medical problems and these are dealt with discreetly and diligently.
Her room has been completely renovated and is now a lovely, bright space. She was very ill at the start of lockdown last year and the doctor suggested moving her into hospital. We decided that she should remain in Camilla House. She was very ill for quite a few weeks but she was nursed really well and recovered.
The staff are very capable and kind. They are cheerful and work really hard to keep up the resident's spirits.
The management communicates well and updates us on any issues regarding my sister's care.
It was very difficult being unable to visit the home because of the restrictions but as soon as these restrictions changed we were informed immediately about visits.

I don't need to worry about her because I know she is well looked after by the caring staff.

The staff at Camilla House are extremely friendly and caring, I know my dad is very well looked after. His room is always very clean and the staff are always very welcoming. My dad seems content and happy. We are pleased we can now visit and spend some time with him.

My mum has been a resident for three years. I chose Camilla House for the lively friendly atmosphere, communal engagement and variety of stimulating activities, entertainments and general fun and laughter going on. The pandemic has been very challenging for all and understandably not all plans have
happened as expeditiously as I would have wished. It has also necessarily changed my mother's experience to having to spend a lot more time on her own in her room. I regret this but understand the necessity, in order to try to prevent any cross infection.
I feel that the manager and staff have worked extremely hard to try to safeguard residents from the virus to the very best of their ability. I value that many of the staff I met at the outset are still in post. This facilitates consistency. I generally find the staff to be warm and caring and they appear fond of and kind towards my mother. The manager is very approachable, caring and reliable. I feel I have good communication with all.

Because of the pandemic, I have not been able to visit my mother for the past year as I no longer live in the UK. However, the manager and her team keep me informed of my mother's condition and general wellbeing. She is not able to communicate by any technological means but we did receive photos of
her birthday celebration. Although Camilla House was directly affected by the pandemic with both residents and staff becoming ill, the staff worked tirelessly in caring for the residents despite the additional workload caused by the necessity to use PPE. My mother did not catch the virus, a testament to the good cross-infection measures and has now received her first dose of the vaccine.

My mother has been a resident in Camilla House for 10 years now. Challenges such as the language barrier have not been an obstacle for the staff. She has dementia but the care has been fantastic. Staff will accompany us to hospital appointments and have either started earlier or stayed past their shifts
just to support mum. I am really grateful. Outstanding care. Thank you.

My Dad has been cared for at Camilla House since October 2017 and in that time the quality of care, and how content my Dad has been, as a result, has been a source of great comfort to myself and the wider family.
The nursing and care staff provide a first-class service in often difficult circumstances,
and the home and bedrooms are always clean. Food options at mealtimes are varied and portions plentiful, with regular snacks and drinks always provided. The entertainment and activities programme was variable previously but has shown a marked improvement in recent months.
There is no doubt though that the home needs a make-over (primarily in the communal areas) and would benefit enormously from this - it's good to know plans are in place for repainting, new carpets and chairs etc.
All in all, I couldn't be happier about the way Dad is being looked after as he approaches the end of his life and to the dedicated, friendly team at Camilla House, I would say a big 'thank-you'.

My husband settled well coming here three months ago thanks to good staff and pleasant atmosphere. He started to eat better again and put on 4kg! This, in turn, made him stronger physically. We are all greeted well when visiting and there seems to be a certain life in the home most of the time. The
staff make sure of that. A bunch of residents have just gone off in the minibus for an outing in the sunshine and there are many other activities through the week. I think my husband was lucky in his misfortune having to come here.

My mother moved into Camilla House in February 2018. Since my mother moved in, her health has improved. My mother's ability to do things for herself has been encouraged, she now drinks from a cup and glass, and feeds herself at meal times. My mother is always clean and well presented. Staff are always
present to interact with residents and support their comfort and provide activities. My mothers room is made personal and her comfort and safety is always a priority. My mother enjoys going on the bus to the supermarket and other locations.

Camilla House is a clean bright absolutely fabulous five star home for the elderly.
From the day my family member entered his new home they supported us the family and helped alleviate the guilt we had at such a difficult time. He has been treated with the utmost care respect and all his needs met.
The
staff from manager down to the domestics etc make this place what it is today.
They spend lots of time with the residents getting to know them and have regular activities going on throughout the year.
Keep up the good work you are a lifeline to many when all other avenues are closed.

As someone who has been a registered nurse for over 35 years, I found that the experience my Mother and our family had with Camilla House an extremely positive one. All of the staff led by the Manager and the Deputy Manager were excellent. From our first contact with them whilst trying to secure a place
for Mum, they were welcoming, open, honest and keen to allay any fears we may have had. Throughout Mum's time there, we were all treated with respect, compassion, care and dignity with all of Mum's and our needs being met fully. The home itself was clean and welcoming and offered a variety of activities for those residents that wished to partake in them. I would have no reservation in recommending Camilla House to others.

Camilla House is a beautiful building with excellent facilities and a very high standard of cleanliness. The general atmosphere is very pleasant. The home is very clean and staff are very friendly. The home has a 'homely' feel and we are very pleased with the care dad receives. The home keeps us well informed and it's great having open visiting. Dad is treated with dignity and respect which means so much to us.
