Colinton Care Home is located in Edinburgh's Merchiston area and is convenient for shops, amenities, public transport and Edinburgh City Bypass. Princess Street and the city centre are just 10 minutes by car. The home offers nursing, respite, palliative, and dementia care.

This purpose built care home has been extensively refurbished with updated facilities and redecorated rooms, and provides accommodation in single occupancy rooms, all of which have en-suite facilities.

Colinton features TV lounges and quiet sitting rooms for relaxation. Separate dining rooms, where residents can socialise at meal times are also available. The home provides restaurant style dining and meals are cooked by their chef using local and fresh produce. Residents can select from the daily choices available. Special diets can be catered for.

Residents may benefit from the regular visits made to the home by an experienced hair stylist, chiropodist and physiotherapist. If required, complementary therapies can be arranged.

The home provides a range of activities for residents. The recreation and activities team oversee everything: from theatre and beach trips to excursions to the safari park in Sterling.

What an amazing care home! I feel like we really have hit the jackpot here. Initially, I admitted my friend to another care home but within 6 weeks I could see that he was losing weight and although very confused, he was crying and telling me that he was miserable. Immediately I made plans to move him
and came across Colinton Care Home. From the very first conversation with the home, they were absolutely amazing. We had been in such a stressful situation and they stepped in and made the move over so easy and pleasant. What a difference I can see in my friend now. He is clearly very well cared for, mentally and physically. He’s looking so much happier and is joining in with activities. The gardens are amazing. He loves watching the squirrels running up and down the trees. Every member of staff has been helpful, friendly, professional and has gone the extra mile to keep us in touch by Facetime, phone and Facebook. I feel 100% secure that he is happy and well cared for. It is a real from home.

We are delighted that my sister has made such a positive response to moving into Colinton.
From the start, the help and guidance from the manager and his staff have been excellent.
My sister is clearly well looked after, encouraged to take part in activities and is making friends.
She tells me she
is happy, the food is good and the staff are wonderful.
The staff do all they can, during this pandemic, to maintain contact on the phone and with photographs.
From the plans we have been told, I think she will have a better Christmas than we will!
A huge thank you to the manager and his team.

For the past three years, my mum has been a resident at Colinton Care Home and I can confirm that it does indeed live up to its name!
From the Manager and front of house staff right through to all the different teams that make up what must be one of the best Nursing homes around. The care and dedication
shown from the start of mums stay, and right through this dreadful pandemic, has been truly remarkable! Being unable to see mum for over 5 months was the hardest thing for our family, but the efforts of all the staff at Colinton to update us with a dedicated Facebook page showing all the extra activities they were doing, each member of my family could keep updated. Weekly zoom calls and regular updates, we can’t fault.
Now that I can see mum on a limited visit each week, I can see for myself how well and cared for she is! And that’s Down to the caring and nursing staff! Who all deserve a medal!
I have no hesitation in recommending Colinton Nursing Home!

My friend has been in the care home for 6 years now and is very happy and well looked after. The staff are first class, very professional, approachable and keen to help with any issue. There is a very homely atmosphere in the home which makes my visits both relaxed and enjoyable. The hygiene is excellent
and my friend receives the best of care in her lovely clean and bright room.

My sister has been a resident for 6 years and during all of the time, her care has been exemplary. As her medical condition has worsened over these 6 years I can only say that the care she has received has got better.
Every one of the staff is kind, caring and respectful, and they are all willing to

I am very happy with the care and attention that my mum receives at the Colinton Home. All the staff try very hard to ensure that she has everything she needs and find time to talk to her and involve in events. All staff are very friendly and helpful and are quick to contact me if needed. Mum likes
to go to the activities that take place and particularly enjoys the lovely garden on sunny days. She is very happy with her room and the facilities and I think the cleaning and hygiene standards are high, particularly now. Prior to Covid-19, I was able to visit my mum three times each week but the home quite correctly made the decision very early to stop all relatives' visits to the home in order to protect it's residents from the virus. The management team and staff have made fantastic efforts in these difficult times to keep the home safe. I am able to speak to my mum regularly and to see pictures of events on the home's Facebook page. The Colinton team are doing a great job.

We chose Colinton Care Home for my Aunt because it has a pleasant friendly atmosphere, nice clean rooms and a beautiful garden. My Aunt has been at Colinton for 18 months now and happily regards it as her home. The transfer and settling process has handled with professionalism and kindness for which
we are truly grateful. In fact fog stopped my flight on the day my Aunt was to move to the home and, rather than delay which would have caused my Aunt confusion, staff from the home went to my Aunt's flat and conducted the move with huge sensitivity and efficiency.
My sister and I are many miles away from Colinton and so it is particularly important that we feel that we can trust the staff to be aware of changes in my Aunt's condition and take appropriate action as well as report them to us accurately and promptly. I have regular chats with my Aunt's care worker who clearly knows her well and puts a huge effort into making sure her health and well being as attended to.

Mum moved into Colinton care home three years ago.
We have been very impressed with the care Mum is given.
We are kept informed with regular updates from staff.
The home is well staffed with a regular team who do an amazing job.
Since the outbreak of Coronavirus, the staff have gone above and
beyond, taking care of the residents ensuring that while relatives cannot visit they are all entertained and stimulated.
A social media page has been set up for relatives, which is a great comfort to be able to see our loved ones.
Online meeting are also organised by the manager where relatives are updated on all that is happening in the home and any questions are answered.
Video calls with loved ones is also offered.
There are not enough words to describe how amazing the staff are coping with this very difficult situation, showing amazing love and compassion for our loved ones and putting their care before their own.

We have come to expect a very high standard of care and concern for the residents in the Colinton Care Home but we feel the need to record how especially well the staff have responded to the Coronavirus pandemic. They have done an extraordinarily good job in keeping relatives informed of how things
are going and they need to be congratulated in bucking the trend in care homes in Scotland by keeping the virus at bay. Posting updates of activities on the social media web page has meant that we have been able to see our relatives engaging with and enjoying a wide range of activities. The creativity shown by the staff in inventing new sports has been amazing and has compensated greatly for the loss of outings which has been imposed by the virus. Keep up the good work! The relevance and regularity of updates has been hugely reassuring.

My sister and I visited many homes before choosing Colinton.
It was such a massive and difficult decision to make and we wanted to get it as right as possible for mum.
Right away we had a good feel about Colinton.
Three and a half years later we can honestly say we made the right choice.

During the Coronavirus situation we are so grateful to all the staff who have dealt so amazingly to keep the residents and each other safe at this difficult time.

At this difficult time with Covid-19 I am so glad my dad is safe and secure in Colinton. The staff are fantastic. They are doing their very best to keep all the residents entertained and safe. They have set up a social media web page so we can see what our relatives are getting up to and we can ring
them to have a chat. I have also been sending cards and care packages to my dad. If you wish you can also have a video call with your relative. We receive regular newsletters keeping us up-to-date and we had a video meeting with managers; they are doing everything they can to keep us informed and to reassure us. In light of the news about what's happening in other care homes this is all greatly appreciated. All I can say is thank you, stay safe all and keep doing what you do best.

My mother (90) has been a resident at Colinton since July 2017. When my sister and I made a local "care home tour" the atmosphere and friendly, helpful reception we received at Colinton was immediately noticeable and so very much better than the 3 other homes we had visited. It was a good decision,
we are very happy with the care our Mum has received since the day she arrived. The home is visibly very well run by kind, caring staff. Most of the staff are the same people who were there at the start: there was even one carer that left to work elsewhere who decided to return to Colinton after only a few weeks! I think that speaks volumes for the management and the team spirit that is so noticeable there.
At the time of writing this review, we are in week 7 of the Covid lockdown and Colinton has remained Covid-free. Yes, there is an element of luck involved, but the good teamwork and good practices observed at Colinton are helping to keep that good luck! Heartfelt thanks to you all.

During this current state of lockdown, it is good to have updates on both the residents' welfare and that of the staff.
The staff are giving their best during this difficult time, and keeping the residents active and stimulated.
It is gratifying to know that everyone is well and that all necessary
precautions are in place for the safety of both residents and staff.
To say 'thank you' seems very little, but it is heartfelt.

I am completely reassured that my friend is getting the optimum care as I receive frequent, regular reports from the manager of the Home. These reports are factual and honest and indicate that my friend is not in any danger of contracting Covid-19 and that there was a full complement of staff. An
opportunity was given a week ago to interact with the manager and nursing officer of the Home via video call. A full report was given at the time. It was reassuring to learn that the Home was not accepting any more residents and so avoided the introduction of Covid-19.
The questions below can be evaluated only on the basis of my experience before visiting was no longer possible.

I am very settled here at Colinton Care Home. I feel fit and happy. I am well fed, kept informed of any activities and able to suit myself regarding the activities.
Also, there is a large garden where people in wheelchairs can be taken and although in a city suburb has a country feel about it. Not
that it affects me (space)! But a bigger visitor car park would be good.

My husband has been cared for by excellent caring staff who also have a sense of fun. The atmosphere in Colinton is calm but busy. The staff are very friendly and always helpful. It is a pleasure to visit there.

I am very pleased with my Mum's care. All the staff are unfailingly friendly and supportive - everyone from the front door and throughout the building. The cleaners do a great job and always speak, the kitchen staff are very willing to try and supply anything she would really like to eat and the activities
coordinators are great fun and work hard at engaging her. The nursing and care staff are very kind and attentive and treat her with great dignity and humour.

My father has been in Colinton Care Home for over a year and I cannot recommend this care home more highly. The staff and activity leaders are excellent. The rooms are beautifully furnished and immaculately clean. The attention to detail is incredible. My father has been extremely well looked after

I rarely give full marks in any review assessment so, from the score given here, I can confirm that, overall, I am well pleased with the standard of care offered in the Colinton Care Home. There are one or two members of staff who can sometimes appear over friendly, verging on the complacent side but
on the whole, the standard of care is excellent.

Elizabeth Cass

Job Title: Home Manager

Liz Cass brings over 15 years of dedicated nursing experience, having served as a nurse, charge nurse, unit manager, and deputy manager.
From April 2014 to December 2022, she managed the dementia unit at Colinton Care Home and held the position of Deputy Manager. After a brief period of career development, Liz returned to Colinton as the Home Manager, motivated by her passion for elder care.
In her spare time, Liz enjoys adventurous outings with her son, whom she considers to be her greatest achievement outside of her work.
She advises families to trust their decision when choosing a care home. Liz is deeply committed to the happiness and well-being of her residents, always going above and beyond to meet their needs.
