As a result of advancing Alzheimer's disease, my father's care needs could no longer be met at home. He has always hoped not to go to a care home. As a family, this was a difficult decision to make. Much to our relief, he feels 'at home' in Newark. As a nurse myself, I am in no doubt this is due to
the support we have all been given by the management and staff to support our transition. The level of care and compassion we have experienced have been tangible. Excellent!

Reply from Moira Roberts, Home Manager at Newark Care Home

Dear Anna, we appreciate the difficulty associated with placing a loved one in care and we are so glad that we have been able to welcome your father and put your family's mind at ease.
It's lovely to hear that you can see how caring our staff are, especially given your experience in the sector. We are very glad to have you all as part of the Newark family. Kind regards,

The staff at Newark Care Home are amazing. Great attention and care are given to residents. Within the first few days of my Granda arriving, Newark staff all took the time to introduce themselves and took an interest in learning about his life and family. He settled in almost instantly with his own
space and room decorated with his personal items. I enjoy hearing stories when I visit like "he has been Irish dancing" or that he was "full of giggles". This tells me he is in the right place.

Reply from Moira Roberts, Home Manager at Newark Care Home

Hi Caitlin, thank you very much for this review. For us, it's not just about looking after our residents but making sure their families have peace of mind that their loved ones are safe, happy and, as you say, are in the right place. So, this is really lovely to hear - almost as nice as hearing your Granda's giggles. Take care, Home Manager.

My father-in-law became a resident recently. We anticipated that he would struggle with the transition but due to the staff, the opposite happened. From day one he was made very welcome and very much part of 'the family'.
Staff attitudes and approach were fantastic and made it easy for him to settle.
He is well looked after, is safe and secure, has room to walk, is eating better, socialises and enjoys time is his own room.
We have seen him return, in some ways, back to the person he was.

In the 6 years Mum has been in the nursing home her rooms have never been decorated - it looks quite shabby and her furniture is old as are her carpet and curtains. Mums clothes and toiletries often go missing.

The staff within the home are very friendly, approachable and go the extra mile. They

are understaffed and underpaid.

I am really pleased with the service provided at this care home. My Aunt is cared for extremely well. I can walk in to visit my Aunt any time, day or night. The staff are very attentive and are very welcoming. My Aunt has dementia and is treated with dignity. My aunt is kept very clean and well presented.
Also, her room is clean, bright and homely. Overall this is a fabulous place.

We would like to thank all of the staff in the Lithgow Unit for the care given to my Brother-in-Law during his stay with them from September 2016 until he passed away in June 2017.
The attention given to him was excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone requiring care for their
relative.
Well done to you all for the hard work that you do.

My mother, recently deceased, stayed at Newark Care home for over 2 years. She was well cared for and I always found the care staff to be compassionate and kind. The management listened to and responded to our requests. In particular, as my mother approached the end of her life, she and the family had
expressed a wish to avoid if possible mum being taken to hospital. The management and nursing staff ensured that mum could die in the home where she was familiar and comfortable and supported us all through to the end.

Newark care home is one of the best care homes I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, the staff and management are friendly and warm. My uncle is so at home here and Newark meets all his needs. Since moving to Newark I have seen a vast improvement in his mental and physical health. I would highly
recommend Newark, one of the best in Scotland, if they had a star rating out of 5 I would give them 10.

A few weeks ago my mother in law became a permanent resident in Newark Care Home. On arrival the manager welcomed my mother in law with a very warm and welcoming hug and both myself (who was accompanying my mother in law) and herself felt so much more at ease as I could see my mother in law visibly
relaxing after her welcome. My mother in law had already met the manager when she was at her home where her likes and preferences for food etc. was discussed. She always likes a cup and saucer for example. All the staff are so friendly and cheerful and the food is always hot and appetising. Today I noticed my mother in law sitting with a lovely cup of tea in a cup and saucer.

I have visited two other care homes in the area, and they do not come anywhere near Newark for good staff, best care and cleanliness. I visit my father-in-law at various times of the day and the care is always the same, excellent. Newark care home staff are extremely caring and attentive to all the
residents needs.

I can say in all honesty I don't know how I would have managed for the last four years, my dad has been so well looked after by all staff members. When he came out of hospital I did not know if he would last long, but thanks to the care he receives he is a changed man since leaving hospital. I would
recommend Newark Care Home and staff to anyone thinking of care for their parents. I would visit every day, now I go every second day sometimes if I have things to do. I can now carry on with my life knowing he is in the best care.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.617)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.617) out of 10 for Newark Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.9 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.707 for Newark Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (41 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 58 Ratings = 4.707

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.91 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Newark Care Home is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 61 registered maximum number of service users is 12.2. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.2 = 0.41

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
