With a team who are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, Abercorn House is a thriving care home with a warm, family feel. In 2024 the home was runner-up in the Caring UK Awards, for the Care Home of the Year Award for the whole of Scotland!

Providing nursing, dementia and palliative care, the team also provide respite care breaks, which are an ideal support for carers looking after loved ones, enabling them to take a short break themselves.

There are so many wonderful activities to enjoy, from pamper sessions with manicures and hand massages, to baking and even a mobile cocktail bar!

There are gentle exercise sessions, games and also sensory sessions in the home’s relaxation room. Abercorn has a hair salon, with a mobile hairdresser visiting the home twice a week.

And mealtimes are a real highlight of the day, with home-cooked Scottish fayre prepared by the chef and home-baking for afternoon tea.

Abercorn has its own minibus for trips into the community, from the local transport museum, to garden centres and cafés. This Halloween the residents carved their own pumpkins, which they hand-picked locally.

The team are passionate about residents having a very active role to play in how their home is run, with resident ambassadors, who are involved in everything from interviewing potential staff, to providing feeding back on everything from the menus to the activities on offer.

Loved ones are welcome at any time, and Abercorn has a lovely garden room, which is a wonderful space for families to celebrate special occasions.

The large gardens are a beautiful place to relax in the summer. They have just had a makeover, with the residents helping with the designs, choosing everything from the layout to the plants and furniture they would like. This summer the residents enjoyed growing their own flowers and vegetables.

My husband has only been in Abercorn House for a few weeks, but I have to say, we as a family, are extremely happy with his care, also the activities provided. I also appreciate the FaceBook page for families as it lets me see what he has been doing.

My husband spent 16 months in Abercorn House Care Home and I have nothing but praise for the manager and staff for their dedication and commitment. Nothing was ever a bother and they cared for my husband with kindness and patience and always treated him with respect. I was also made welcome by cheerful
and friendly staff and was able to communicate easily with the home. I’m so glad I chose Abercorn.

My dad has positively thrived since entering Abercorn House Care Home last year. He is very happy at the home and that means his family are happy. The home is spotlessly clean and comfortable. The care and nursing staff are lovely and Dad gets on well with them. If I contact the home by phone or email
with any queries, or to raise any issues regarding Dads care, I always get a friendly and speedy response. The few issues that I did have during the period while Dad was settling in and adjusting to his new home were resolved very quickly. Overall, I can’t fault the level of care provided.

I feel my mother has been well looked after in the two years she has been in Abercon House Care Home, the staff genuinely seem to care about the residents.
Any time I have been there it seems to be well run and is clean and tidy. I have good relations with the staff who are always happy to talk about
my Mum and what's happening with her. I would recommend it.

My gran has been in Abercorn House for 2 1/2 years now and this was undoubtedly the best decision. The staff have been amazing and supportive to gran and the family. The home always puts my gran's needs and care first. My gran tells me how lovely the staff are and she enjoys the food! She loves to participate
in all activities and I love to see photo's of her laughing and smiling. I can only thank the home for keeping gran safe and her spirits up during the pandemic. Keep up the amazing job!

Mum seems really happy at Abercorn. She moved in during the COVID pandemic but has settled in really well. She's especially enjoyed going to the day room for her exercise and the trip went to Strathclyde Park.

Sadly my mum had to go into a care home as she needed round the clock care. I am and have been my mum's sole carer for many years, I also work full time so I had to make the very difficult decision to let my mum go into a care home which was heartbreaking. My mum was welcomed into Abercorn in Hamilton
with open arms as was I. The staff (angels I call them) took care of my mum, settled her in with a cuppa and from then we have never looked back. My mum was bed bound and had to wear a catheter, she was also bed bathed by carers at home. Within a week of my mum being in Abercorn, she was up sitting in a chair every day, fully dressed and showered and her catheter removed as she was now being taken to the toilet. Simple duties the carers at home couldn't seem to manage! I think every member of the staff at Abercorn are angels and heroes. Nothing is too much trouble for them and I am forever in their debt. Thank you, angels.

My friend had viewed Abercorn and told me she’d been round several and she liked the feeling of the place. She was right, I liked it right away. My mum’s been a resident in Abercorn for almost one year now and I’ve been happy with her care. The situation we all found ourselves in this year has been
so stressful and life-changing, even more so not being able to see our mum every day. However, she settled in really well and the staff had her in a great routine after a short amount of time. We were fortunate that she was in for a couple of months before the lockdown, enabling us to see her settle. She was like a new woman compared to what she was like in hospital. It’s a very well managed home, with friendly helpful, honest staff and the food is very good too. I read a review before my mum went in and the only fault one lady had was that the socks get muddled up from time to time and I thought, well I can live with that. I fully trust them to care for my beloved Mum and best friend!

The Care team at Abercorn are fantastic, they will go above and beyond to make a difference. These guys are real heroes. Over the last few months, it has been difficult visiting because of the restrictions put in place by the government but I can say the staff have done everything possible to allow
visits to continue with total care and safety. I just want to thank them all and wish them a merry Christmas.

These are the most caring, friendly and trustworthy people I have come across. Do lots of activities with the residents and communication is excellent. They have done a wonderful job recently, especially during this covid-19 pandemic. I cannot commend them enough.

My aunt has been a resident in Abercorn House for five years. I visit once or twice a week. I have always found the staff friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble. My aunt and other residents are all treated with respect at all times. The facilities are very good, modern, clean and safe.
The
staff do a lot of activities with the residents which always brings a smile to everyone's faces.
The management make me feel included, are always available and communicate well, verbally and through newsletters.

My mother has been a resident of Abercorn for almost 2 years and from day one we, as a very close-knit family, have been very very happy with the manager and all his staff. They go above and beyond for everyone they care for, it makes us feel that our lovely mum is getting the best care and attention
that she could possibly have and for that, we are all extremely grateful. Keep up the good work.
P.S. when can we get back into see our mum, it's killing us.

My dad was in Abercorn for respite and the staff are fantastic and we can't thank them enough for all that they did for us. Every one of them from management to the carers were amazing and they go above and beyond for their residents. They got my dad back on his feet and I honestly don't know what we

The staff in Abercorn are caring, friendly and very accommodating. The care manager is very accommodating, very approachable and they all loved my dad and gave him the best of care. He settled in the home so well. I would recommend this care home and the staff 100%.

My dad was happy and very comfortable in Abercorn House. The staff were friendly, attentive and very approachable. The home was clean with comfortable chairs and always nice and warm.
My only negative was the laundry side. My dad's clothes would go missing and we never could find his socks.
My dad
actually put weight on while at Abercorn house, showing he was fed well.
I would recommend this home to family and friends as I feel the care given was excellent.

Every time I went in to visit my dad, the staff were always very friendly and welcoming. They always treated my dad with respect and my dad always looked very comfortable around the staff. They always kept him smiling.

My father had a stroke 9 years ago and is paralysed and unable to speak.
In recent years with new management, the home is improving and hopefully will continue this way.

Rowena Alferos

Job Title: Home Manager

Rowena has been part of the team at Abercorn for many years, proudly working her way up from Deputy Manager to her current role leading the home.
Since she became the home manager in 2023, Abercorn has received a 'Very Good' Care Inspectorate rating, with a 'Very Good' in every single area, as well as being named runner up in the Care Home of the Year Award (Scotland) in the Caring UK Awards 2024!
Coming to Scotland in 2004, Rowena graduated as a nurse in 1993 in Manila.
She is passionate about involving residents' loved ones in everyday life at Abercorn and champions residents to have an active role to play in how the home is run, with both resident and relative ambassadors.
