My father receives excellent care at this wonderful home. His dementia has gradually worsened, but the staff have been immensely good to him and very supportive of us, as his family. Every carer has shown pride in their work, making sure my dad's final journey is one of dignity and love.

Reply from Andrea Lewis, Home Manager at Southview Care Home

Thank you for your lovely kind words, it's with great sadness that Dad is now in the latter stages of his journey, it pains us to witness the changes that this horrible illness brings, and not be able to do anything other than care and support, we wish that we could do more. Our residents to us feel like our family too. I am proud of my staff team and of the care that they provide, these kind words will make them feel appreciated for the great job that they do. Once again a heartfelt thank you.

My brother is happy and very contented living in Southview. This care home has two separate units, and he has stayed in both, all with excellent care. The staff are totally fantastic and cannot do enough for him. He enjoys the food and the comfort of his room with his TV and radio. Recently his family
purchased a small fridge to keep his drinks and nibbles handy. He has also recently moved to a freshly decorated bigger room. The garden area is being refreshed and ready for the summer. It was a Godsend during 'lockdown', as were the 'window' visits. The Covid times were extremely difficult, but the staff and manager succeeded in keeping me up to date with the guidance rules. There's also a quarterly relative meeting which gives all information about the care home.

I am very happy with the staff, staffing levels and management of the service. My friend is happy there, and I am comfortable that they are treated very well.
My friend appears happy and well looked after. The rooms are very hot, but I guess it’s for the comfort and well-being of the residents.

My brother died in this care home on September 13th. Why was there not a defibrillator, he could have been saved if a defibrillator had been used. Why is there not a defibrillator in this care home? And also he was receiving a lousy £20 pound per week. They took his wee bit of independence he had away
from him by holding his money back from him and giving him £20 per week. What was he supposed to do with that, it's disgusting as he had a lot of money. I had to keep him when all the time he had his own money.

Reply from Andrea Lewis, Home Manager at Southview Care Home

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback.
The death of your brother must have been a distressing time for you. Care homes do not routinely have a defibrillator on site as this is not normal practice in the social care sector. All appropriate actions were taken by our nursing staff while awaiting for the ambulance service to arrive and support your brother.
Thistle Healthcare were not a corporate appointee at the time of your brothers' death and as such, we were reliant on the previous appointee sending money to the home. I understand this must have been distressing for you but the home acted in the best interest of your brother while appointeeship was transferred over to Thistle Healthcare. The amount of personal allowance per week could have been increased if needed there was no such request made to the home.
We are sorry that you feel the home has not provided your brother with the service you feel was required and thank you for the feedback.

I was very pleased with the review and the way that it was set out regarding the questions and answers that were given regarding my brother's care in the care home and hope that continues. As it looks like life for him in the care home has come to long-term care. I am very pleased with the staff and
carers who look after him as it's not an easy job in this day and age, they deserve a lot of credit.

My mum really enjoys being at Southview Care Home. Staff are always friendly and pleasant. They take great care of her personal hygiene, and she always looks clean and tidy. Before Covid, they were taken out on day trips; would like to see this happening again, as feel it’s good for them to have a day-out/activities.

Reply from Andrea Lewis, Home Manager at Southview Care Home

Thank you for the review.
We are having more outdoor activities now that measures have been lifted outwith of the care home. With the home accessing walking football, the gym, local resource centre as well as shopping trips/meal out. Activities outwith the home do result in a fee being charged for transportation and escort(s) as this is a service which is not covered by the contractual fees.
If there is something that a family want us to specifically arrange, we can provide costings and arrange this.

I am so disappointed to find out that staff are no longer allowed to take the patient out that it has to be family. There could be someone that doesn't have anyone else to take them out. My brother loved the days when he got out. I thought that was all part of the service and the rehabilitation to get
him back into the community. It is not always going to be a member of the family who are going to be there to take him out, so the patients have to suffer because the company have changed their rules. So disappointed.

Reply from Andrea Lewis, Home Manager at Southview Care Home

I am sorry that we are unable to take your brother to enjoy the local community facilities. I explained today by telephone that Thistle has previously requested guidance from external bodies with regards to such points as PPE and dress requirements for the staff to allow staff to access the community facilities with residents. This request has been escalated to the Scottish Government and we await their response and guidance. I appreciate that this is frustrating for you, the resident and the staff. We are extremely keen at the home to be able to utilise the facilities, for the residents to have this normality. I am really hoping that we will be provided with this guidance soon.

I have found the home and staff, in general, to be competent, open and friendly. During the Covid year, they have stepped up to the plate and seem to have handled the virus situation very well.

My brother is a resident at Southview, and I couldn't ask for any more from the staff and the personalized care that he receives. During the covid pandemic, they have been really supportive and kept the family up to date with everything, and all the guidelines etc. There is no better place that myself
and my family would wish for him to be in than Southview.

I think I am treated well in Southview. You get fed well and food is good as well. You can talk to the staff as well. I am hoping to see my family soon as well. All the residents I get on with well. I've no problems with anything about Southview. I would like to go back to work and get my flat back.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.495)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.495) out of 10 for Southview Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.695 for Southview Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (70 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 95 Ratings = 4.695

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.8 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Southview Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 40 registered maximum number of service users is 8, which has been reached with 8 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
