From the first day my husband moved into Antiquary House Care Home the staff made us both feel very welcome and since I have been coming in on a regular basis and my husband is settling. I am getting to know the carers and nursing staff. I have also spoken to the manager who is very helpful which makes
this awful time more bearable for myself. All I want is for my husband to be kept clean, fed and safe. The room is very airy and kept clean.

Mum moved here in August 2024, my Dad was also a resident here previously so we already knew that the care offered was excellent. It took mum a wee while to settle down and staff have been wonderful. Nothing is a problem and they are very attentive to both Mum and myself & my sisters should we need
help with anything. . They are very friendly & approachable. There is a range of activities available to mum should she want to participate. I believe the food is very good and I know mum enjoys the home-bakes! Mums room is very nice and always very clean and tidy.

My sister has been a service user arriving at Antiquary in November 2023 as her original service accommodation was damaged in the floods. We originally had some doubts about my sister being there. However, after raising our concerns, we plan in regular meetings with the management and care/nursing staff,
enabling us to iron out any issues we had.
All the staff are brilliant with my sister, regardless of which department they work in, they all take the time to speak with sister.
My sister recently moved to a bigger and brighter room which has had an immediate impact on day to day mood. The activities have improved massively, involving all the service users regardless of ability/disability, it's great to see the photographs of my sister being happy and smiling. Some of the service users are so friendly and enjoy a wee chat, which I am more than happy to do. Overall I am very happy, knowing my sister is being cared for well, well done to the new management and all the team.

Reply from David Kerr, Communications Team at Antiquary Care Home

Thank you very much for this fantastic review of Antiquary. It's heartening to hear how happy you are with the level of communication you have with the home to resolve any issues, the care your sister receives and that she's enjoying her new environment overall. The team do their absolute best and will be delighted to hear your high praise.

Antiquary became part of my life from September 2017 when my dad moved into Westway. The staff became part of the family, providing first-class care to my dad. Despite his decline with dementia, my dad was the happiest I had seen him in many years. This was due to the commitment and care of the staff.
During that time, all the staff were extremely welcoming to my mother - inviting her to stay for meals, and participate in the games, or social events when she visited my dad. My mother's transition to moving into Antiquary in June 2018, went smoothly due to the care home feeling like a second home to her. My dad passed in August 2019, compassionately cared for by Antiquary staff. During the Covid years, the staff went above and beyond their remits, keeping residents entertained. I have witnessed many changes over those years, some good, some not so good, due to changes in management. Overall, my opinion of Antiquary is positive, with my mother continuing to receive first-class care.

My mother has been in Antiquary for several years now suffering from Dementia. She is bed bound. Even though we live close to the care home and visit regularly the nursing staff still phone me regularly with updates on Mum's well being. They monitor and are willing to share key details of Mum's health
with us when requested. They have a good relationships with the local GP, Mental Health Team, Dentist and other services to make sure all aspects of care are dealt with in the best possible way.
The carers are amazing and bring a smile to Mum's face when they are with her. Mum needs care for every aspect of her life now including feeding and drinking and everything I have seen says this is done with compassion and dignity.
One last thing, the care home provided Mum with an Alexa. This allows us to provide Mum with music she enjoys through Spotify. It is a small thing but music is perhaps the only thing left for Mum to enjoy.

My mum went in for respite care at short notice. All the staff at the care home are friendly and helpful and seem to know all the people staying there and their relatives by name. Mum says the meals are very good, and there is always drinks and snack available.
Rooms are really big and clean.

My husband has been in Antiquary for three and half years. In that time he has been well looked after. Everyone no matter which unit, kitchen, cleaners, laundry and especially the carers all say hello to him by name and not just him they know the residents and their likes and dislikes. The food is good
so are the activities etc.. The new manager has turned the place round as well.

Reply from David Kerr, Communications Team at Antiquary Care Home

My wife has Huntington's Disease, she entered the Antiquary Care Home on 31/07/23. During this period I have had many concerns about my wife's care. She has no mobility and poor dexterity in her hands. She requires close care. At times her drinking mugs are dirty, the fluids which have thickener added
were left too long without being refreshed. Her clothes were almost daily badly food stained.
My wife often complains about her food, her food has to be pureed, when it is served to her, very seldom she is advised what it is. She also complains about the food being too salty for her.
A lot of the staff are very nice and helpful, some not so much. Most of the staff do not appear to have HD awareness, possibly due to little or no training. People with HD have a very high risk with possible choking, this can easily cause food and liquids entering the lungs and causing infection. When I visit my wife often says she is hungry, often there is too much noise for her, alarms and people shouting.

Reply from Anna Gunn, Communications Team at Antiquary Care Home

Thank you for your feedback – it is very important to us to be aware of all you have told us. Everything you have highlighted here is very disappointing and does not reflect the standards of care we strive for throughout the group. Our residents and their care and respect are at the heart of all we do. The Home Manager will arrange a care review to discuss your concerns and better meet your wife’s needs.

We moved Mum to the EMI Unit in August 2020 and she resided there until her passing in January 2023. She absolutely thrived there. We had to move Mum to Antiquary due to her prior care home was no longer viable as stated Mum absolutely thrived very quickly at Antiquary. She was happy and the staff were
brilliant with her and us as a family. The support from the activities coordinator, the food and third-party care such as dental, hairdressers and opticians was excellent. Communication with the family was excellent.
Mum declined due to her condition and the staff adapted to continue delivering excellent care nothing was a problem.
In the latter stages of Mum's life and end-of-life care that was delivered with such genuine care, compassion and dignity. We were always kept updated and we really can't thank all of the staff enough for making her last few years as caring and comfortable as they were. We would highly recommend Antiquary for your loved ones.

I was made to feel very welcome when I visited the care home. All my questions were answered and I felt at ease. I was reassured when the Home Care Manager was a psychiatric nurse. It smelt nice in the home care had been made, to make the entrance hall inviting. I wasn't rushed during my visit. I was
impressed that all the staff were very smiley-genuine smiles.

What a frightening 6-weeks it has been, but made better with the support of the amazing staff at Antiquary who have been patient with my dad (who now lives in the home), and so supportive of my mum - who now lives alone. When my dad first relocated to the care home, it was frightening for us all, but
the staff took us all under their wing and walked us through every step of the process.
There have been a few stumbling blocks but I would encourage everyone to ask questions if you have any queries. The one issue I had was, that my dad has dementia and was telling me things he "believed" was not happening, when in fact they were. Communication with staff and management is so very important to keep things straight. Thank you all so much for changing our lives for the better.

No problems at all with the home, the facilities, and especially the staff. The Standard of care is excellent, and the general atmosphere is happy and upbeat (unlike one or two other homes that I have had connections within the recent past)... keep up the good work.

Our overall experience with Antiquary Care Home has been very positive. Dad has been there for nearly 2-years, he entered the home during Covid, and we have been very grateful for the care that has been given to him. Nothing ever is a bother to the manager and her staff. Dad has been happy, comfortable
and well-fed!

My mother was transferred to Antiquary from a local hospital unit after a full assessment process. Despite that, within a week the staff requested that she was moved back to the hospital because of her (dementia-related) behaviours and needs. That is, of course, understandable. What was less acceptable
was that no one updated her family of the home's growing concerns over that week, either by phone or when we visited. We were only advised of the move to the hospital by the council's social care department - with one day's notice. To add to my dis-satisfaction, my calls to the home for some information were not returned for another week, and even then only after I called the Balhousie Head Office. Antiquary looked to be a super choice for my Mum's needs. It appeared very welcoming and all the staff I met were friendly and attentive. My experience, however, suggest a weak needs assessment process and an absence of the simple courtesy of consulting with residents' families.

My mother-in-law moved into Balhousie Antiquary Care Home last August in the midst of Covid-19. What can we say - she has settled in so well, she’s thriving and happy. The staff made it so easy for us to move her in, when we phone they are always helpful and informative as to how she’s doing. There’s
always loads going on for the residents to do. At Christmas and New Year the staff went above and beyond to make it special as family couldn’t visit. Just wish we’d done it sooner. Highly recommend Antiquary.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.647)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.647) out of 10 for Antiquary Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.3 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.344 for Antiquary Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (53 Excellents x 5) + (25 Goods x 4) + (12 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 93 Ratings = 4.344

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.303 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Antiquary Care Home is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 58 registered maximum number of service users is 11.6. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 11.6 = 0.603

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
