Ruthven Towers Care home is set in tranquil, leafy grounds just off "Lang Toon".

The building used to be an elegant country house hotel and evidence of the splendour and glamour of the former hotel is still very much part of today's architecture.

The home has recently benefitted from a major, sensitive renovation, and now provides 51 rooms, many with stunning views over the gardens and the rolling Perthshire countryside. The configuration of this home also provides a number of luxury care apartments for residents requiring a little more comfort and homeliness in their care accommodation.

Ruthven Towers really is more akin to a high end hotel for the elderly rather than a traditional care home. The home welcomes private and socially assisted residents and offers a range of bedrooms and care packages from £550 per week.

My mum moved into Ruthven Towers on the 25th of April, she really loved it, she loved all the staff, as they are very friendly and give her the care she needs and looks after her well.

My auntie's experience in staying at Balhousie Ruthven Towers Care Home is not good. She has no problems with the staff, they are friendly and always very busy. The food is not good, as by the time it gets down to her room it's either warm or cold. There's no taste to the food as it's all been frozen,
nothing cooked from fresh. My brother can come down from buying fish and chips, parking car, waiting to be let in, signing in then walking down to the bottom floor and to room and the fish and chips are still hot. My aunty likes her food piping hot. She has only met the manager once if met her, the manager should be visiting residents weekly.

I needed a week of respite care for my mother. I phoned Balhousie Ruthven Towers and spoke to the manager who could not have been nicer. She accommodated Mum warmly and sympathetically, making my stress disappear.
Mum had a beautiful room and was well looked after by caring staff. My don't concern
was the arrival of another patient who frequently entered Mum's room. This was mentioned on day 1 but unfortunately happened throughout her week's stay.

Reply from Melanie Brockway, Brand & Communications Manager at Ruthven Towers Care Home

Thank you so much for writing your review around your mum's respite stay. We're so glad your worries about the stay were quickly dispelled, and she received the good care and attention you, and we, would expect. We have noted your concern regarding another resident, and have passed this on to the home and Operations team to look into. Again, thank you, we'll be sure to pass on your kind words to our hardworking staff.

1. The noise from the buzzer monitoring system that is in the corridor is too loud and can ring relentlessly. I have classed this under 'room' for rating.
2. Despite spending my own time trying to improve things including looking through menus and writing suggestions, the food in the main is very
poor. There should be something that I want to eat and finish 7 days a week.
3. Some staff have good hand/glove hygiene, others don't.
4. Incorrect information has been recorded about me on a system.
5. It is an ordeal having a shower.
6. The serving utensil fell onto the floor from the heated trolley. A kitchen porter put it back onto the trolley to be used to serve food. That is not hygienic.
7. The room is called a suite. The worktops are too high for someone who is seated. I couldn't pour water from the kettle because of this. The shower room leaves a lot to be desired, I wouldn't want to linger in there.
8. Younger carers want to put bedding that is to be used on the floor until I tell them not to.

My first impression was that this was a pleasant place to be. The residents were happy, and the staff were cheerful.
I worried that my husband would be in a room on his own most of the time, but this is not the case, and he has options of a TV lounge or a smaller, quieter place.
Despite Alzheimer's
and a stroke, he knows the staff and always seems happy when I visit. One thing he does enjoy is the food, and this is excellent.

My mother was in Ruthven Towers for a very short period (ten days). In this time, she was cared for in an exemplary manner by all the staff she came into contact with. Apart from excellent personal care, they engaged with her in a most caring and empathetic way. Nothing was too much trouble for them
and she took to all of the staff right away. Unfortunately, she deteriorated very quickly and the nursing, and palliative care she received was second to none. In her time there it was a great comfort to all of us that she was so well cared for until the end of her life. Apart from looking after my mum, their care extended to our family and we are very grateful for that.

Staff are pleasant, courteous and take time with all the residents to ensure their stay is as comfortable as possible. Ev-suite rooms are spacious in a large, country house set in the Perthshire town of Auchterarder. Regular activities, meal breaks and tea and cake allow individuals to interact and
maintain contact and stimulate senses and keep residents involved and content.

We were delighted to get my mother out of the hospital and into local care that could cope with and improve her physical and mental condition. My mother has improved significantly in all aspects since she came to Ruthven Towers. Some small problems/issues - but overall good.

Very good care home with high standards, in a very nice building setting. The staff are extremely professional whilst being super friendly. If I have one comment it would be that quite painful escalating fees could probably see investment in additional staff… shared pain between provider and paying
family as it were. Overall, very happy with mum’s total care. A recommended care home indeed.

My mum has been living in Balhousie Ruthven Towers Care Home now for a year. My sister and I came to realise that mum required professional care last May, after being diagnosed with vascular dementia at the age of 86. We chose Ruthven Towers in Auchterarder primarily for its location and on a recommendation.
We have, without a doubt, made the right choice! Mum has been receiving excellent care and personal attention throughout a most difficult year. The staff have all been superb in dealing with unprecedented challenges and I can't thank them enough for everything they do for my mum and the other residents. Weekly window and outside visits were both emotional and stressful, how wonderful it is to visit mum in her lovely room and enjoy a coffee together!

Following a very difficult year for all care home residents, staff and relatives I would like to praise the manager and her wonderful team at Balhousie Ruthven Towers Care Home. Mum has been in Ruthven Towers for just over a year and I am very happy with the care and love she receives on a daily basis
from all the staff. We have experienced outdoor visits, window visits, designated area visits and now the luxury of being able to visit mum in her own room. The staff have accommodated many of our requests in various ways to communicate with mum during lockdown. The deputy manager has been amazing and shows a depth of care and empathy that is so fulfilling and heartfelt.
Mum is always immaculate in her appearance and her accommodation is spotless. I wish I could name all the staff individually and thank them for their excellent care and attention. The activities coordinators do a great job too.
All Covid guidelines are adhered to in line with the Scottish government.

It’s been hard not seeing my father, but we talk regularly on the phone as well as having “window” visits, and his main concern is us on the “outside”. This wouldn’t be the case if he didn’t feel safe and happy at Ruthven towers. He absolutely adores many of the staff, who all find time for a wee blether,
and he’s not slow to remind us of how lovely they all are. I very much get the feeling that the no one aim at Ruthven Towers has been not only to keep the residents safe and well, but to keep them happy too, and that has been a great comfort to us. Well done all.

My mother moved to Ruthven Towers three years ago. She has Alzheimer’s. She has been very happy here, and I am very happy with her care. During the Covid epidemic, Mum has been kept safe and well, and the staff have been kind and sensitive to both her needs and mine. They have kept us in touch with
regular photos and news, helping us find the best way to have contact. It is a comfortable, happy, family home with lots of fun and entertainment, as well as all the care you would want.

My mum became a resident of Ruthven Towers in 2016. As a family, we hoped that we had made the right choice of nursing home care for her and we were worried about what the future held for mum. From that day two years ago mum, has only been treated with kindness and compassion by all the staff, whether
it's the care staff taking time for a chat and laugh with her or the nursing staff tending to her medical needs. From the manager down, we know we can discuss any problems/queries we may have regarding mum and it is so reassuring to know the door is always open!
It is lovely to see mum joining in the various activities the home has and I enjoy being able to take part in some with her so still making memories together.
Ruthven Towers has a real family environment, friendly and always welcoming!
We as a family, definitely know that we made the right choice for mum two years ago.

After exploring care facilities in two other regions for my elderly cousin, and visiting several, I was totally disillusioned and saddened by what I saw and learnt about these homes. I then visited Ruthven Towers.
I broke down on my investigative visit. My tears were tears of relief. Here is a home
that actually does what it says in the brochure. I had found "The Hotel For The Elderly" for my Dearest Cousin. She has been there for 7 weeks now and I am just delighted. The leadership is strong and forward thinking, the management team work as a unit and are "resident lead", the staff are all patient, friendly and welcoming.
A huge weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Ruthven Towers is indeed a warm, spacious, secure and stimulating environment. My cousin is not only cared for but genuinely cared about. The concern shown does not stop there, as the whole team are committed to reassuring the relatives and listening and responding to any worries they may have. Ruthven is just superb.

My mother moved into Balhousie Ruthven Towers Care Home in November 2017, following a hospital stay. It had become apparent that she would require full nursing care upon discharge. Someone suggested that we check out Balhousie Ruthven Towers and we visited the next day. The staff member who showed us
around was delightful, as were all of the staff we met that day. The home was clean, cheerful, cosy and welcoming. My daughter and I could hardly believe our luck in finding this place! My mother moved into Balhousie Ruthven Towers soon after that initial visit and my time spent there with her as she settled in reassured me that our initial impression was entirely accurate. Balhousie Ruthven Towers is a wonderful place - beautifully appointed and staffed by well trained, compassionate and respectful individuals who deeply care about the people they are looking after. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Living abroad, I now have great peace of mind knowing that my mother is being looked after so well in such a lovely place.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.730)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.730) out of 10 for Ruthven Towers Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.161 for Ruthven Towers Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (49 Excellents x 5) + (49 Goods x 4) + (13 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (3 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 118 Ratings = 4.161

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.569 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Ruthven Towers Care Home is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 52 registered maximum number of service users is 10.4. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.4 = 0.769

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
