My mother was in full-time care in Sutton Grange until her death in August. During her eighteen months of there, she was shown great care and love. She was treated as a human person with dignity and respect. The staff were always about and ready to help.
The management now in place were clear in their
philosophy of making it a home where residents felt they were at home. They succeeded in this with my mum and even though her illness made caring a difficult situation, she was happy there.
I always felt confident in the welfare my mum received across her time there. Staff were always friendly and supportive.
I always wanted my mum to return to Sutton Grange after her hospital stays. They worked closely with the medical services to ensure she received her medication promptly and in line with guidance.
I would recommend it as a care home which is striving to improve and build upon its good practice. I would have had no hesitation in placing my mum back there if it had been possible.

My mother has been a resident at Sutton Grange for just over 2 years. Whereas in the early days we were impressed by the care provided and atmosphere, we noticed changes during the latter part of last year that were not good. During the last 3 and a half months, however, with changes in staff and management,
things have improved greatly.

We were glad to get my mother into this home early in 2018 after our experience of good end-of-life care for my father. The facilities for residents and their friends and family are excellent with many different areas to sit and lovely grounds to enjoy in good weather. This adds to the quality of our
time together when visiting. Since May, changes in management, development of staffing structures and additional staff training are all having an impact on the atmosphere which seems happier and more purposeful. The staff try hard to offer a range of activities tailored to individuals' interests and needs and we have seen my mother improving as she has been able to participate more.

I was so glad that I was able to get my sick husband into Sutton Grange. He couldn't have had better care. Everyone was so kind and looked after the family as well. Nothing was too much for them.

He's walking better, eating better and his whole demeanour has greatly improved. He is still talking about it and his only complaint was that everyone went to bed too soon and there was no-one left to talk to! If that is all he can grumble about we can live with that.
I know that he has started a letter
to the home and we are currently getting some pictures of him when he was a Royal Marine to accompany the letter.
Thank you again.

From my initial meeting with the manager to review mum for respite to mum spending a week with Sutton Grange, I was made to feel confident that my mum would be well looked after. It was the first time for mum going into respite care so was a little scary for us all. I would recommend Sutton Grange Grange
from my experience this time. Thanks for looking after mum.

Today 9th March, the care has been especially good thanks to a certain senior carer here at Sutton Grange. She spent time with dad, gave him a wet shave and generally made him feel a lot better and well groomed. This is how it should always be - Thanks to good well-trained staff.

I have been a resident at this home since January 2015. During that time I have settled down, as well as can be expected and have been cared for in a sympathetic and professional manner. In general, the menu and food quality have been good and whilst I cannot say it is just like home, nevertheless I
do not think that under the circumstances I could not have chosen a better situation.

However, for some time, there is one area which has been causing me concern and that is in the position of general manager. Since my arrival, which is less than 2 years ago, we have had 2 so called permanent managers and at least 4 to 5 temporary ones, a situation I would suggest, that does not ensure the consistent and efficient running of the home. I am somewhat surprised therefore that a large and experienced company would allow this situation to develop, and in particular, at a home which has only recently been opened.

As a senior manager in industry for many years, I am well aware of the importance of having an experienced manager in charge, either of a department or a company. Particularly for the staff involved who require a stable and worry-free environment in which to work.
At a rough guess, I would suggest that over the past year at least 30% to 40% of the management work has been carried out by the present under management staff who, in my opinion, have coped with a difficult situation in an efficient manner, and who in my opinion, should be considered if a further vacancy arises here.

I must apologise for taking up your time with this "problem" but feel that for my own peace of mind, at least, it was important that one resident at this home should make you aware of his feelings in this matter.

I have been more than pleased with the dementia unit at Sutton Grange called "Blossom Walk". The care staff are very good. The facilities for entertaining residents not so good. There are men who would welcome "something to do" nuts, bolts, making things from playdoh etc. Many mornings all they do is
sit or walk around.

My Mother-in-Law has stayed for 2 weeks. the care she received was top notch. The staff, nurses, and bosses were so friendly and helpful. When we left on our honeymoon we could relax knowing that my Mother-in-Law was in very safe hands.
She seemed to be happy staying here. We will definitely be using

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.179)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.179) out of 10 for Barchester Sutton Grange Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.5 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.636 for Barchester Sutton Grange Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (72 Excellents x 5) + (31 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 107 Ratings = 4.636

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.543 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Barchester Sutton Grange Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 70 registered maximum number of service users is 14. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 14 = 0.643

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
