The team at Upton Dene are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents with inspiring activities.

The home has its own trishaw for residents to enjoy trips out into the community. Every week they have visits from therapy dog Ned and the residents enjoy regular visits from the University of Chester’s choir of student nurses. The local community are also invited to the home's Memory Café afternoons (1.30pm to 3.30pm), supporting local people living with dementia and their loved ones.

The home has a giant interactive tablet, which is wonderful for games. And many of the residents love to grow their own produce in the gardening club. There are also trips out into the community in the home’s minibus.

The home is modern, light and airy, with some very special spaces for the residents to enjoy. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, with ensuite walk in wet rooms. Some bedrooms have direct access to the gardens. The residents enjoy home-cooked meals in the dining rooms, and there is a private dining area for residents to enjoy special occasions with loved ones. There is also a vintage tearoom, a lovely spot to relax with family, who are welcome to visit at any time.

Upton Dene has a hair and beauty salon, with a mobile hairdresser visiting for weekly appointments. And the cinema room is a lovely spot to relax and watch old classics with a glass of fizz and some popcorn.

The gardens are also beautiful, with a pavilion, sensory planting and a vegetable patch for residents who enjoy a spot of gardening.

Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, the team also provide respite care breaks, which can be booked in advance.

The physical environment is excellent. It feels more like a home, than a residential establishment. My father is comfortable and settled and relates well to the staff, who provide an excellent and caring service, during very difficult circumstances.

Mum was admitted ten months ago from hospital. She has no memory and doesn't realise where she is and has been violent, at times but the staff have always been very caring, kind and treat both her and all of us with dignity and a real understanding of our worries. Mum has developed a chip craving and
the kitchens will produce a plate of chips for her, even when they are not on the menu. Mum is always clean and well cared for, despite being incontinent. I would highly recommend Upton Dene (nursing floor.)

My mother moved to Upton Dene in August 21 and passed away in October 21. The staff I met were kind and caring.
My mother was wearing her engagement ring and wedding ring when admitted; she never took them off. She was wearing them the last time I saw her but they were not with her when she died.
The
rings were on her inventory and had been seen by myself and staff members shortly before my mother passed away, they were valuable both emotionally and financially to her and her family.
This is an ongoing issue for us, and I have drawn my own conclusions.
Please be careful with your loved one's valuables if considering this establishment.

My 89-year-old mum moved into residential care here at Upton Dene approximately 3 weeks ago. She has settled really well due to the extreme kindness and professionalism of the team here. They are amazing and I feel so much more relaxed that Mum is getting the care she deserves, at last. Nothing is too
much trouble. In terms of facilities, it is extremely good. There is a hairdresser on-site a few days per week and a little shop for gifts. The cinema room is fab and Mum loves the food. Her room is spotless and well decorated. Of course, there have been minor issues but these have all been resolved. Covid continues to be a pain with restrictions but I know these are to protect Mum and I’m happy to live with these inconveniences. I am delighted, so far and I’d like to extend my thanks to all the staff who deserve the biggest medal.

The bedrooms and common rooms were clean and modern, and the food of a good standard. All criticisms seem to stem from the fact that there are too few staff on duty. My father was left for long periods alone in his room. He said that he wanted to sleep but he just wasn't motivated by the "activities"
which seem to have been designed for residents of declining capacity. It was 3 weeks before he learned there was a garden and then he was locked out and nobody realised. Could not recommend.

We also pride ourselves on the safety precautions we have in place and have the latest state-of-the-art security system to ensure doors automatically lock in areas where they need to. We appreciate that this may not be needed for some residents, but it’s so important that everyone is cared for in the best possible way. Generally very good. Vast majority of staff are caring and dedicated. Not perfect, but wouldn't expect anything to be so. My one beef is communication between home and relatives. Very often a phone is not picked up when I call and certain initiatives, like being involved in residents' health plan, start
and then disappear.

Due to Covid-19, many activities which I have enjoyed have not been possible, such as singers and other 'acts' visiting the home. Also, being able to enjoy shopping trips, theatre, cinema, visiting family has been curtained. I have found that the overall quality and variety of cooked meals available
has also diminished greatly over the previous year.

I find all aspects of my mum's care to be good. My only issue is around her food and how weak she has become during covid. She says she gets potato and carrots for lunch every day; however, I have not witnessed that. Her strength is now minimal, covid has been cruel to her, allowing her to stay in bed
she got so weak, I can't see how she can ever regain her strength.

On the whole, the care is excellent. Better than others I have seen. The standard of the public areas and rooms is very good. Most staff are extremely nice and helpful, however, a few need better people skills not just for residents but their families also. Communication with families could be better.

Always greeted by reception staff in a friendly and welcoming manner. When calling staff are polite and put me through to the nursing floor. Nurses and carers are lovely and take the time to give an update on my friend's condition. They are lovely with my friend showing love and compassion and empathy.

The staff have done a brilliant job in preventing Covid-19 from entering the facility. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and obvious additional measures in place, it results in residents becoming very lonely and depressed as there has been little contact from staff, and no visits from friends/relatives.
Once the visits are allowed again, I am confident the result would be better.

My Dad needed some respite following an operation and time in hospital after a head injury before he went home to build up his strength physically and emotionally. Staying at Upton Dene certainly did that, he was very well looked after, all the staff were really lovely to him and he absolutely loved
the food and was very well fed. He had access to the lovely garden and he made the most of that as his room opened directly on to it. His room was really nice, he said it was like a 5-star hotel. I couldn't recommend the home and the staff any more highly, Dad certainly enjoyed his time there and would go back like a shot if he could!

In these difficult times, we really have felt supported as a family by the home, bearing in mind, we were unable to see my mother for months. My mother has dementia, and I was afraid Mum would not recognise us when she saw us again. This month (June) we have been able to see Mum through the window and
in the garden, for us all, it has been marvellous. The staff are friendly and caring always, reception staff are great too.
