The team at Upton Dene are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents with inspiring activities.

The home has its own trishaw for residents to enjoy trips out into the community. Every week they have visits from therapy dog Ned and the residents enjoy regular visits from the University of Chester’s choir of student nurses. The local community are also invited to the home's Memory Café afternoons (1.30pm to 3.30pm), supporting local people living with dementia and their loved ones.

The home has a giant interactive tablet, which is wonderful for games. And many of the residents love to grow their own produce in the gardening club. There are also trips out into the community in the home’s minibus.

The home is modern, light and airy, with some very special spaces for the residents to enjoy. The bedrooms are beautifully decorated, with ensuite walk in wet rooms. Some bedrooms have direct access to the gardens. The residents enjoy home-cooked meals in the dining rooms, and there is a private dining area for residents to enjoy special occasions with loved ones. There is also a vintage tearoom, a lovely spot to relax with family, who are welcome to visit at any time.

Upton Dene has a hair and beauty salon, with a mobile hairdresser visiting for weekly appointments. And the cinema room is a lovely spot to relax and watch old classics with a glass of fizz and some popcorn.

The gardens are also beautiful, with a pavilion, sensory planting and a vegetable patch for residents who enjoy a spot of gardening.

Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, the team also provide respite care breaks, which can be booked in advance.

My father has been a resident in Upton Dene for nearly two years. He has vascular dementia which can at times be extremely challenging. All the staff are warm and welcoming and always have a cheerful outlook. The home is always spotlessly clean and a pleasure to visit.

Although it has been difficult for residents, families and carers/management at Upton Dene, the decision to 'lockdown' at the very outset of covid-19 has obviously paid dividends. There has been no incidence of covid-19 at Upton Dene and this has provided us with a sense of safety and security. It has
been a great help during these stressful times. Huge thanks to all the team at Upton Dene.

Upton Dene came to our rescue last December, my mother was taken into hospital leaving my father who has mixed dementia at home on his own. The deputy manager promptly came out to assess dad and he was admitted 3 days later. He received excellent care, he enjoyed the company, there was plenty of activities
to keep him occupied. As a family, we knew he was safe and happy - I cannot thank Upton Dene enough! Outstanding.

My father has been at Upton Dene since December 2018. I can not fault the care my father has received since arriving. The staff are all very friendly and willing to speak to you at any time if you have any concerns. My father is on the nursing floor which is more like a hotel than a care home and has
a lovely relaxed feel about it. The lounge is very homely and the dining room is always set up nicely ready for meal times. My father has settled in really quickly. Thank you all.

Since he moved to Upton Dene for residential care last August my father has received excellent care and support.

Transferred from local hospital to a very nice room. Made to feel welcome.
A folder of information relating to meal times, activities and facilities would have been useful. But staff have all been helpful and caring.
Room is cleaned every day, bed is made if one asks and help with shower and washing
is available if needed.
We're allowed as much independence as possible.

My mother's initial review was very thorough in assessing her needs. All the staff have worked really well in getting to know Mother and help her settle. All the staff are helpful and supportive to us to enabling us to be conscious that Mother is being looked after well and is safe.

Problems often due to staffing levels in my opinion. Towels not always in room. Carers now accompany and inform of activities. Laundry a bit haphazard at times. Quiet rooms and activity room does not appear to me to be used to its potential. Mattress a bit thin and covers etc could be improved.

Although we had a few problems with management when my sister moved in, we (the family) agreed Upton Dene was the best place for her.
The building itself is open plan/airy, very well furnished and clean at all times.
The bedrooms are small but adequate.
Staff are excellent which, to me, is the most
important.
Receptionist always friendly and has time for a chat, although very busy.
The carers, cleaners, laundry staff etc all make a fuss of my sister (dementia floor) and look after her and love her unconditionally.
They are wonderful staff, activities good, really relieved to know she is happy and safe.

I first heard of this home when I was discharged from hospital having previously lived alone in my own house with carers visiting 4 times a day. Here I soon appreciated the freedom from the minutiae of everyday living i.e., shopping, meal planning, house maintenance etc. With good care and congenial
surroundings, I decided to stay. I do not regret it.

Overall my care and safety have been well looked after. However, I would like to mention that there is a lack of staff on the ground to cover the number of people requiring care. The food is presented more often than not on cold plates, which I told the management about at the recent meeting. There
are never enough napkins at mealtimes which for me is a serious problem. Catering requires an overhaul.
