My husband has PCA, a rare form of dementia and has been at the Porterbrook for 4 years. I have been very impressed with the care that he has received and every time I visit him, he seems settled. I recently had a week's respite care for myself at the Porterbrook and it gave me the opportunity to observe
the care that was being given 24/7. What immediately struck me was how lovely all the carers were with the residents and they obviously saw each one as an individual so their interactions with them varied according to what worked best. It is rare to be able to observe carers in action but I came away thinking that it would be impossible to find a better care home in terms of the support they give to the residents and to the relatives. It is clear that the manager, who has been in the post for about 18 months, has implemented processes which make everything run much more smoothly and there is always a cheerful atmosphere when I visit.

My mum has been at Porter brook since March. I have found the staff very caring and engaging to both my mum and me. Mum enjoys her time with the staff and is happy living there. The staff are always positive and seem to really care about my mum and other residents. They are reassuring and caring on
the one hand and also efficient and proactive when needed. I have every confidence in the staff and know my mum is being cared for and stimulated with activities when she wants to. She would definitely tell me and the staff if she was not happy.

The manager is extremely knowledgeable and very helpful in the assessment of my mother-in-law.
She visited us at home, which was very helpful and she made us feel completely at ease throughout the whole process. She is an excellent advocate for the home and I would not hesitate to make a good recommendation
for their service.

My parents have settled well into Porterbrook and keep telling us how lovely it is, how kind the staff are and how well they are fed. Our experience of dealing with the staff has been excellent. The home is clean and tidy. They make every effort to have activities that suit all abilities.

The staff all have the right attitude, caring and kind. I was learning "how to be a good resident". For example, to avoid making demands on staff around the morning and evening change over time. Day and night I struggled by feeling too chilly. I had some help with adjusting the heating system and was
given a blanket but I never really felt warm enough. (The ensuite was warmer). I liked the food especially the morning porridge. And the room service was really helpful. I took time to use the laundry system effectively. I could have asked for more help with my prescription medicines. Thank you all for your care.

I have been looked after so well at Porterbrook care home. The staff were lovely and friendly and would fetch you anything you wanted if it was possible. The facilities and food were very good. I had my hair and nails done and really enjoyed my stay.

Dad spent five weeks at Porterbrook on respite care. We found all the staff extremely helpful friendly and professional. Dad’s accommodation was roomy, clean and nicely decorated with a real feeling of "home" to it. We would not hesitate to recommend Porterbrook to anyone or contact them in the future
for Dad to either visit for respite or long-term care.

My father who has dementia came to Porterbrook for a week's respite care. We had a detailed pre-visit assessment of all his care needs and we were given clear instructions regarding admission and settling in relation to the current covid rules. We had regular telephone contact with him during the week
and good communication from staff regarding his progress. When I went to collect him, he presented as happy and content and reports he’s had a lovely holiday and the food was great. I know he made particular reference to two staff members, in particular, who cared for him but thanks to everyone, who made us stay so stress free.

Mum went into The Porterbrook last September after her dementia made it difficult to live independently. A difficult decision for the family and not helped by the current pandemic. Here we are 6 months on and we are delighted with her care. She has put back on the previously lost weight (too many cooked
breakfasts that she claims she is not having!) and is still bright, cheerful and engaged which is primarily down to the staff and setting. The Porterbrook was chosen because it has more of a hotel feel than a care setting and I was delighted when I finally got a bedroom visit to find it was modern, bright and spacious. The staff have been excellent both in terms of care and administration with families being kept informed of the ever-changing government visitor restrictions. It is difficult to review some aspects due to the restrictions but overall we know she is in safe hands.

I was told off this week for appearing at 9.45 am to see a friend for a quick window visit and drop off some goodies for him. Apparently, I'm not allowed to come before 10 am. I personally feel it's more like a prison than a care home. My friend's hair is never brushed and last week he was walking holding
his trousers up as his belt needed more holes and no one had informed family that he had lost a lot of weight and needed smaller trousers.

I am sorry to read this review as this is the only negative feedback we have had regarding our visiting policy throughout the Covid -19 pandemic.
The staff at the Porterbrook have worked very hard to facilitate all residents having visits either in person or of a virtual nature and no one has suggested that the home is like a prison.
In fact, we have had positive feedback which is borne out in other reviews on CareHome.co.uk and in feedback to myself. As the home was not aware of your visit in advance this may explain why staff may not have been ready for you at 9.45.
We, as a staff team at The Porterbrook, are striving in very difficult circumstances to provide all visitors with the means to see their loved ones and will continue to do so through the pandemic.
If you would like to contact myself at the home regarding the other matters then please do so however we have been in close contact with the family of this resident and all issues have been addressed.

Mum was very reluctant for respite care, especially in the middle of a pandemic, we as a family were also worried, however, we were all very reassured by the staff. Mum was well looked after and enjoyed her stay, she even met an old work friend who was also resident in Porterbrook. Although we were
unable to visit we could have a garden visit and phone calls which were very reassuring. Thank you for all the kindness you showed to my mum. She thoroughly enjoyed her stay.

The past six months have been very difficult for everyone, but in all that time I've never had any doubts that my mother is in excellent hands and being kept safe and well looked after.
The Porterbrook Care Home have kept me informed of testing, what they're doing to keep the residents entertained,
and sending photos, which show my mother looking happy and well dressed. This has been of great comfort as I've not been able to travel to see my mother since March. I must express my gratitude to the staff for being so nice and doing such a brilliant job in keeping everyone safe.

My mother has been in The Porterbrook Care Home on a respite basis. Due to Covid restrictions, I have not been inside the home. However, I am exceptionally impressed by the kindness and support received from the staff. There is real continuity of care, with a sense of family and community whenever I
ring. They immediately know what my mother has been doing that day, how she is, what her moods are. I very much like the fact that I can speak to named individuals who are looking after her. They have taken the trouble to try to understand her and analyse her needs and to come up with strategies to help and support her. I am very grateful to them and would not hesitate to recommend the Porterbrook.

The staff are marvellous and treat my cousin with great care and kindness, I can't recommend them highly enough.
They all display great professionalism and show great dedication in looking after the residents.
The room where my cousin is living is just right for her, comfortable and peaceful which
she likes, with a good standard of furniture.
Their care of the residents' relatives is lovely to see, we are always made welcome even if we can't actually visit in the home at present, they are always ready to facilitate a meeting outside where possible or even just waving through the window.
I have already recommended the care home to a personal friend, whose mother now lives in the care home.

My mother suffers from advanced dementia and I have not been able to enter the premises due to the Coronavirus outbreak, so my comments cannot be specific. However, all members of staff have been helpful and polite when I have contacted them and have been very proactive in supporting communications
between my mother and me when I have visited from outside.

The staff at the home are very caring to my husband and to me. He has dementia but is physically very fit. The staff have gone out of their way to get to know and understand him and to stimulate him physically with an exercise bike, walks and outings.
He loves the food which I have enjoyed too! Facilities
and cleanliness are really good. A very friendly atmosphere.

Lynne

Lynne Cannell

Job Title: Home Manager

Joined: 2021

Lynne brings a wealth of experience to her role as Home Manager at The Porterbrook.
Having completed her nurse training at Sheffield University, she worked in a number of hospitals across a variety of wards, including general surgical and cardiology before pursuing her passion of caring for the elderly in care home settings.
Lynne, has worked in care homes in Sheffield and Rotherham and is privileged and honoured to now be leading The Porterbrook Care Home team and to be providing the highest possible care for all the residents.


Laura

Laura Liversidge

Job Title: Office Manager

Joined: 2016

Laura worked as Housekeeper at the Porterbrook since it opened in 2016.
Laura has gained a multitude of experience and qualifications whilst working at the Porterbrook, including an NVQ level 3 in hospitality and leadership.
In March 2022, Laura made the decision to move away from the housekeeper role and took on the role of Office Manager. Laura can always be found at the heart of the Porterbrook. She prides herself in ensuring all our visitors; relatives, friends and professionals receive a warm Porterbrook welcome whether it be on the phone or in person.
