St Brendans Care Home, Crowthorne, is a very caring and professional care home. Staff are excellent, always with the best interests of the residents at heart, safety and consideration to everyone's needs come first, to provide a pleasant and welcoming place of rest to those who need that extra care.
We as a family are so thankful that our mum is being looked after by such a dedicated team.

Home is warm and comfortable. Carers are attentive and professional. Mum has settled in well and is happy.

The system that allows the family to see exactly what the resident had done/eaten etc on a day can sometimes not be accessed by staff, maybe a training issue.

Activities are good but sometimes

Mum seems to get overlooked, maybe just problem with staffing.

Mum not always happy with the food and I think for the money she is paying this could definitely be improved. Main meals should always include salad or vegetables as part of a balanced diet.

Since beginning residing here I have felt much more comfortable and safer (I was at home with carers four times a day). The home is well designed and the room is very comfortable. The staff are very caring and pleasant and helpful. One may be as active as one wishes with a good choice of activities.
Although obviously, there could be more staff, the staff are very conscientious and capable. The grounds are very attractive and should be lovely in summer. The food is a good English general menu.

This is only the second care home I have been in and this is a great improvement on the first, although obviously more expensive. I like the cleanliness in all areas of the home and the reliable lifts. I do not like lifts but these are good. It is also nice to have a hairdresser and chiropodist when
needed. There is one thing I miss and that is a fridge in the bedroom. Perhaps this could be arranged sometime in the future.

I have found staff and management kind and comforting and always willing to be helpful. As I am extremely deaf, I rely on them to make/receive telephone calls and make contact with outside services which they do when I need them.

Admin staff are strong.
Care staff - appear good but short of resources; worry when home achieves full capacity if staff would cope.
Chef problems - evident that the home is struggling to attract and retain good quality kitchen staff.
Value for money - the food is pretty average; at GBP140 per day
you'd expect better.

Warm, but sometimes too warm, clean and bright environment. Staff caring but sometimes under pressure. Management have responded well to mum's issues and have adapted her room accordingly. Will be interesting to see how the staff cope as the number of residents increase and think car parking space will
become an issue!

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.183)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.183) out of 10 for St Brendans Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.557 for St Brendans Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (84 Excellents x 5) + (23 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (6 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 115 Ratings = 4.557

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.626 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for St Brendans Care Home is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 62 registered maximum number of service users is 12.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.4 = 0.726

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
