Belong Newcastle-under-Lyme provides 24-hour nursing and dementia care facilities for 72 residents in six households and 28 apartments for independent living, along with a range of community facilities.

It boasts an extensive village centre including bistro, exercise studio and therapy room and also a unique Heritage Gallery housed in the historic Grade II listed building that has been distinguished throughout the years as Samuel Bell's Pottery, The Old Pomona Inn and most recently the iconic Maxims nightclub, which closed in 2006.

The gallery is integrated within the village centre and links the past and present through shared memories, experiences and reminiscence and forms the base for Belong's Experience Days service, specialist day care for older people.

Featuring Samuel Bell's tea room, a recreated Old Pomona Inn with licensed bar, a reminiscence room, craft and activities room and hair salon with nail bar, the gallery offers a range of activities and opportunities for people to engage with local heritage.

The restored grade II listed building is now home to the Belong Heritage Gallery, placing the village firmly on the town’s heritage trail in its own right. It houses Samuel Bell’s Tea Room, a recreation of the Old Pomona Trail, a timeline and children’s trail, reminiscence lounge and a range of exhibition spaces.

The care provided to my dad was absolutely incredible. Amazing staff at Belong and wonderful people.
Also the support and advice regarding my mum who also has dementia. I now have much peace of mind knowing my mum is safe and most importantly very happy.

Would recommend to others with reservations:-


- Communication between the provider and outside agencies and
friends/relatives 'poor'
- No hot water in washbasins/showers in some of the households without
wasting litres of cold water in order to achieve tepid water (a long-standing

issue of regularly employed staff, but no improvement).
- A reliance on agency staff who do not have the skill set to deal with immobile
residents (brief training not obviously given)

My husband attends the activity days and although unsettled at first, he seems to enjoy going now. So much so that l was able to book him in for a week's respite without him making a fuss. The rooms are exceptionally good and the staff very friendly. He enjoys the food there, especially the puddings.
One very small niggle is getting through on the telephone, but l assume everything is ok or they would have rung me.

My dad has been a resident of Belong Newcastle-under-Lyme for just 6-weeks. We visited before the outbreak of the pandemic; he was very impressed, "just like a hotel" he said. It was 2-years until he was able to move from domiciliary care in the community into his final home. Covid restrictions have
now been lifted, and the home and its broader community facilities will be open to all in time for the Jubilee. My dad has settled well and says it couldn't be better; he says he is well looked after and cared for. He loves his room and the outside space, and he spends most of his day in the communal area. I think the staff here got the balance right, encouraging his independence and recognising his needs to help with personal care and remembering things. I really like the ethos of Belong. Its households and their relationship to the local community. The site is celebrated as a landmark in the history of the Potteries with Heritage Lottery to provide a new community facility.
Well done, Belong, and all your staff for providing such a good service in hard times.
When my time comes, I hope there is a Belong for me.

My mother is a resident on Hempstalls Household where she has a lovely, bright, comfortable room. The open plan living area is fantastic: no residents need ever be on their own and there are often activities which everyone is encouraged to take part in. Nutritious, freshly cooked meals are prepared
on the household. Everything is well organised, enabling residents to live in a warm, calm environment. My mum is looked after by a professional team of extremely kind and compassionate staff. In such difficult times with lockdowns, it has been such a comfort knowing that Mum is receiving such excellent care.

Last year my Dad moved into Pool Dam household, having lived in an independent living apartment there since 2018. With the difficulties of covid lockdowns and health and care requirements, he was welcomed into the family that is Belong households. He made friends and was lovingly encouraged to take
part in anything going on. Sometimes he just wanted the peace and quiet of his own room and that was fine. Someone would pop in with a cup of tea and say hello. All his medical needs were dealt with and I knew he was being well cared for because the access to medical professionals was better than anything I could do. The physio encouraged him to use the cycle machines and he loved it and it was great for his strength and mobility. He passed away in September after a short illness and the care he received was amazing. Staff went out of their way to be with him and provide anything to make him comfortable. They obviously cared deeply for him and I can’t thank them enough.

My father was a resident in the Pool Dam Household of Belong Newcastle from June 2020 until 21st September 2021, the day he passed away. He had the most amazing care during that period, a difficult time during the pandemic. During the last week of his life, he was given the most wonderful care, and
his passing was as good as it could possibly have been. Not only did the staff care for him, but they also took care of us, making sure that we had as much support as they could give us. Moving there was the best decision that he ever made.

I cannot stress enough how grateful I am to the Belong staff for every single thing they do each and every day. Both my parents are in Hempstalls: the care they receive is exemplary. Given the pandemic, staff are working under very difficult circumstances. This makes the care Mum and Dad receive even
more remarkable. Care is person-centered, every need has been attended to be it physical, emotional, spiritual. Every effort is made to support my parents in every aspect of their daily life. Staff are incredibly caring and compassionate and staff are professional to the highest degree. The ability of the staff to meet needs that change rapidly is also extremely reassuring. The care and support Dad receives are second to none. The team at Pool Dam have embraced Dad into their care. He has been quite poorly lately and the team have been fantastic and nursed and encouraged Dad to get him participating again in household life. Dad was so pleased to be back at Belong after

My experience to date is that the staff supporting my mother are friendly, caring and patient-centred in their approach.
They are alert to changes both medical and physical in my mother's health and respond rapidly with appropriate interventions that keep her safe and well, including all professionals

Having experienced life and experience in two care homes, compromise and balance are key features. At Belong, the philosophy and aims are first class and aim to achieve the best possible balance for residents. Absolutely fantastic place, modern, well organised with professional staff in all departments. Residents live as a family with kind and considerate carers tending to their needs. After visiting a few other care homes in the area (older properties) Belong demonstrated what a care home should be like
and how elderly residents should be treated ie in a family-style environment.
Sadly my mother in law passed away in November and even in that sad time the staff were impeccable, respectful and frankly brilliant, we cannot stress how happy we were when she was in there in a safe and secure environment.

My review relates to Guildhall Household, during lockdown 2. The staff have dealt with this difficult time exceptionally well, both with the physical needs (PPE etc) and mental well-being of the residents. It is a shame that I cannot mention names as I do think the lead carer and one of the nursing
staff, in particular, go "above and beyond" every day. It is always noticeable when they are in the household.

During the time my Mum has been a resident on the Ironmarket household, her care has been wonderful. The staff, without exception, have gone above and beyond to ensure that she was comfortable and well cared for. The household setting is very well designed and my Mum’s room was clean and bright.
When
my Mum passed away recently, her end of life care was exemplary. I am so thankful that she was able to pass away in familiar surroundings, being looked after by compassionate staff who knew her well. We as a family were also very well looked after during my Mum’s final hours. On behalf of all of my Mum's family, I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved in her care during her time on the Ironmarket.

Josephine

Josephine Mollison

Job Title: General Manager

Josephine started her career at working at our Belong Crewe village. Her expertise in leadership and mentoring meant she quickly developed to the role of Senior Support Worker and then Lead Senior Support worker.


Her passion for caring and support for people living with Dementia, resulted in her contribution to the village's success in achieving the rating of ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission.


Josephine has supported at various Belong villages, in Lead Support roles, over the past couple of years before being appointed to the role of Support Manager at Belong Newcastle-under-Lyme, before transferring to Belong Warrington in 2022.


She holds a Level 5 qualification in Leadership and Management in Health and Social Care and was also awarded the Dementia Champion Award at Belong's 2020 Champion Awards ceremony.


Josephine strives to continue to champion person-centred care, high standards of quality care, and positive wellbeing.

Lisa was previously the Lead Senior Support Worker, joining the organisation with a wealth of skills and knowledge acquired during her career in domiciliary care.


Demonstrating Belong’s values in her work, as well as a full understanding of the regulatory elements of the role, Lisa was promoted to the Assistant Support Manager position and has successfully completed her level 5 diploma to support her in the next stage of her Belong journey.
