My Dad was a resident at Otterbourne Court for three years. Whilst there he received excellent care from all the staff. I was always kept well informed of any health issues by the nursing staff and I got great peace of mind knowing that the doctor would see him if necessary. This is really important
when you don't live locally. Dad engaged with a wide range of activities and trips whilst there and this meant that he lived a good quality of life until nearly the end. When Dad came to the end of his life I was really touched by the way it wasn't just him that was cared for, but we were all cared for as we watched and waited - this was unexpected and much appreciated. I will miss coming into the home for visits - a lot of the staff have remained the same in the three years Dad was a resident.

We were looking for a new care home for my father-in-law as we were very unhappy with his previous home. Otterbourne Hill stood out from the rest! We were impressed with how light, welcoming, warm, clean and calm the home felt compared to the ones visited previously. My father-in-law was made very welcome
from the moment he arrived. He had a beautiful room overlooking the garden. We were allowed to visit at all hours, there was always a coffee/tea on offer and a kind word.
We cannot comment on the activities on offer or the food as my father-in-law was a resident for only 3 weeks before he passed. His care could not be faulted throughout. We found it reassuring that the nursing and care team were all long-term employees, they could not have been more caring and supportive. His end-of-life care was all we could have wished for: compassionate, dignified and respectful. When my father-in-law passed, we were treated with compassion and given time to say our farewells.
This was a five-star hotel in a sea of human warehousing.

I had to find a home for my elderly mother in covid and something about Otterbourne Hill stood out. I could not even visit, but had a mobile phone tour and felt it was the right place. (It might help to say I had been a qualified ambulanceman for 12 years so had been in thousands of care homes). My
mum passed recently so she spent almost 3 years living at OH. It is very well appointed, quite new, clean and modern. Mum was looked after well overall. It's always warm and is run well. Generally, the food looked good most of the time and afternoon teas generally arrived with homemade cake etc, which is nice. The qualified staff on each household are the shining lights. They are an amazing group of staff supported of course by carers who can be more transient. Most staff speak good English which is important when older or hard of hearing/comprehension. The set-up is to a very high standard. There are lots of breakout areas/balconies which offer privacy and a place to sit out. We are very grateful.

When we first viewed Otterbourne Hill as a potential new home for my mum, the minute I walked in the door I had a really good feeling about it. Otterbourne Court is bright, clean, has a calm and warm feel to it. I can only describe it as a hotel for older people and perfect for my Mum who had lived
in her own home for over 53 years. Some of the food is good and some is mediocre. The rooms could have been designed to be slightly bigger for wheelchair users. It’s great having separate nursing and dementia households. The staff are very caring and Mum is very happy.

Overall, my dad is cared for well, he has been a resident since February 2022. Having permanent staff enables Dad to build up relationships with them and to develop that trust and continuity that is so important. There have been issues but I find the senior staff are keen to address these and put things
right. The majority of the staff are friendly, approachable and helpful. The facilities, cafe and lounge areas are excellent.

From the day my old friend moved in, she was made welcome. She joined in with the staff singing in the lounge that day and started to make friends. I was made to feel welcome from all the staff whatever level they were on, and whenever I visited. As the time went on, the staff felt like my friend's
other family. I know they loved her banter, and she loved them. My friend always looked cared for, and she didn't complain about anything. She enjoyed the food and thought it was great that they did her washing for her! The gardens were well-tended, and we used that area when we could. The staff always let me know if there was a change in her condition, or if she had been seen by the doctor. I felt quite happy to ask questions and knew they would respond appropriately. Up until the last breath, my friend was treated with dignity and compassion. Many thanks to all the staff.

Complete disregard of my LPOA, I might just as well be a complete stranger. I have joint and several LPOA with my stepfather and they insist on only communicating with him, I'm not even allowed a copy of her care plan, although I've requested it in writing, a shocking way to treat my mother.

Reply from Charlotte Chiutare, General Manager at Brendoncare Otterbourne Court

Thank you for taking the time to send us a review. I am very sorry to hear how you feel with regard to the information shared. As per your discussion with our deputy manager we are more than happy to provide you with a hard copy of the care plan for your Mother but there is a set legal process that we have to comply with. I appreciate that this can be frustrating and as discussed we are still happy to sit down with you at any time and go through the care plan verbally while you are awaiting the hard copy. I understand how it must feel that we communicate with your Stepfather more but as he also lives with us, we speak on a daily basis and will answer his questions regarding how your Mother is. At no time have we been asked not to communicate with you and are more than happy to update you whenever you wish. Your relationship with your Mother is very important and we will always do whatever we can to support this. I am also available should you wish to discuss this further

I feel very much helped by staff here - often of their own responding to simple needs as I think of and always help to the knowledge and what I've asked about, e.g. the shop here with its unexpected knowledge of what's available, e.g. verification of time available at that moment. I could continue.

I have been visiting my partner every day at Brendoncare for six months. I am always welcomed with a smiling greeting from everyone I come across. This is from reception, carers, housekeepers, nurses, cooks, admin staff and any other people who happen to be there. The building and grounds are fresh
and clean and well cared for, as are the residents. There are plenty of comfortable lounges and meeting places. The food is good. Care and attention to all detail is appreciated. The staff are always willing to listen and respond to any queries and questions at any time. It is a happy and well managed place.

My husband has only been at Otterbourne Court since the beginning of July, but has settled very quickly. I feel he is safe and secure. The staff are very friendly and supportive both to my husband and myself. I cannot comment on activities as he chooses not to participate, but there often seem to be
activities happening.

Mum has been a resident since 31/12/2018. She has settled in extremely well, although I think this has been helped immensely by all the excellent carers and nurses who have looked after her since she arrived. Nothing is too much trouble and my mum, although she has vascular dementia, would be the first
to complain and let me know, so I can say with hand on heart, well done to all the staff, you're fabulous.

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.063)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.063) out of 10 for Brendoncare Otterbourne Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.4 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.638 for Brendoncare Otterbourne Court is calculated as follows: ( (78 Excellents x 5) + (19 Goods x 4) + (6 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 105 Ratings = 4.638

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.425 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brendoncare Otterbourne Court is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.8 = 0.625

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Caring has always been part of my DNA even before I started in a Nursing Home aged 16, supporting Residents with dementia, different Nursing needs and end-of-life care. I also worked in Domiciliary care over the course of a few years. My Brendoncare career began at Park Road later moving to Meadway where I became a team leader, progressing to Deputy Manager. Brendoncare asked me to support Knightwood for a period of time before transferring there permanently in the role of Deputy Manager, after a few years I became Acting Manager then General Manager.

It’s such a pleasure to now be at Otterbourne Hill as it’s always buzzing and where no two days are ever the same. It is also a privilege to lead a dedicated, motivated team. They put our residents and our community hub members at the heart of everything they do.

Job Title: Deputy Manager

I became a Nurse in 2003, and caring for others is one of my missions. I am determined to deliver quality care to my residents. Working in an acute medical ward in a Government Hospital in Hong Kong for almost 20 years, I had my high skills training as a Nurse specialist and became in charge of a nurse-led clinic as an advanced practice Nurse. Life changing and myself and family moved to the UK in 2020, therefore I restarted my Nursing career again here.

In the process of converting my license, I started a career as a carer to take care of severe autism and learning disability young adults, which is often present with challenging behaviour. As a hospital Nurse for so many years, I wished to challenge myself to become a community Nurse, therefore once I got my license again I went to work at a Nursing home which cares for residents living with dementia. It’s always a learning opportunity whilst caring for individuals who suffer from dementia which enhanced my nursing experience as well.

Working with Brendoncare is my pleasure as their concept of charity and values is my cup of tea. Even more grateful that I am always supported by a dedicated and motivated team. After a few months of working as a Nurse, I took up the Deputy Manager role to keep on challenging myself. I hope my experience and knowledge can enrich the brilliant home and brilliant team, to provide quality, dignity and safety care to our residents.

Job Title: Domiciliary Care Supervisor

When I was young my mum was a home carer for Hampshire County Council and on occasions, I was able to go out to visit some of her clients, which started the passion to care for people. At school I was aiming to become a nurse, so I set up my studies around this, but I met my husband which meant my career changed direction. I have had various jobs throughout my life from being a PA to a Technical Director, Health & Safety administrator to serving in a fish & chip shop. One of my neighbours works at Knightwood and over our fence we chatted and she said how wonderful it was to work there and that I should apply, so history was written.

I have worked with Brendoncare for 12 years, working as a domiciliary carer at Knightwood, to then becoming the supervisor there. Four years ago I was asked if I would like to help the manager at Otterbourne Hill with the domiciliary service. Otterbourne Hill gave me a new challenge in my career as the residents in the mews here are supported to live independent lives whilst having a diagnosis of dementia, we also support families to stay together enabling them an environment to live in and stay together.

Away from Otterbourne Hill, I am a Nanna to 2 boys so this keeps me busy when they come to visit.

I started my working life with British Gas many moons ago, and although not have worked in the ‘care world’ before I joined Otterbourne Hill in 2018, I have always worked and been involved with caring for people in some aspect, sometimes challenging but always rewarding. I enjoy my role at Otterbourne Hill, working with my colleagues, and meeting relatives and residents alike. Every day is different, and I always aim for a good one.

Before joining Brendoncare in September 2018 I had a range of careers ranging from various administration jobs to working in Beauty Salons. After owning and selling an events company I took the plunge and decided to sell so that I can pursue a career within Health and Social care. It was the best career decision I ever made.

I started as a bank care assistant at Knightwood and after a few months, I was offered a permanent position. Being able to make a difference in someone’s day and leaving work with a feeling of job satisfaction is the best feeling and one which I had never felt before.

In January 2019 I decided to start helping out as a Wellbeing Coordinator as well as maintaining my care hours. This gave me a whole new concept within care and one which again, I thoroughly enjoyed. When a part-time role became available in Wellbeing I decided to focus on this area, providing a range of activities and fun events for all residents to enjoy. Being in wellbeing you get to see a different side to people that you may not have seen whilst providing personal care.

In May 2023 I applied for a well-being role in one of our larger homes to challenge myself. I am now a Wellbeing Supervisor at Otterbourne Hill, working within a fun team and still providing a range of different activities including outings and events.

I joined Brendoncare in 2016 as part of the fundraising team, working on the appeal for the Otterbourne Hill care home which opened in 2018. Two years later during Covid, I was redeployed to Otterbourne Hill to help with enquiries and the moving-in process.

I love every minute of my job, which gives me the opportunity to support families during what can be a very difficult time. Previously, my grandmother had been a nursing home resident for several years so, through this experience, I gained the utmost respect and appreciation for everyone involved in her care. I also know how important it is for families to have the reassurance of knowing that their loved ones are safe and receiving quality and compassionate care.

During my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, going for long dog walks and ice-skating.

Job Title: Maintenance Supervisor

I’m from a military background and my father was in the Royal Artillery. I was born in Germany and enjoyed growing up there for 17 years. I then joined the army as an infantry soldier myself and served in many places. I’ve always been a hands-on guy and was a vehicle technician before joining Brendoncare in May 2024. Being a Maintenance Supervisor allows me to put my practical skills to good use which I enjoy and every day is different. It’s been a good challenge for me.

I have seen a very different side to life working here and enjoy talking to the residents and trying to help make their lives here as positive as best as I can, the wellbeing team here do a fantastic job of that.
