Welcome to Welwyn Grange, a family owned home in Welwyn Garden City that challenges most people’s expectations of what a Residential Home offers.

Welwyn Grange is a beautiful new build home, specially designed to be both ‘fit for purpose’ but with a twist of style. The home comprises of individual households, each with no more than 16 ensuite bedrooms. Every household has its own air-conditioned lounge and dining areas, while all residents can access the communal hair salon, private dining room and cinema room.

As beautiful as the home is, it’s the phenomenal care team who really bring Welwyn Grange to life. Unlike most homes, the nursing team are additional to the care team numbers. This enables them to have a proactive approach to nursing care, maintaining each person’s physical and mental health, while avoiding hospital admissions as much as possible.

• Fresh home-cooked food, without the washing up.
• No hassle of keeping on top of household bills.
• Full support with your health and to live a fulfilling lifestyle.

We have been looking for respite for my mummy and I visited the Grange and was so excited and happy that a place as beautiful and all staff members so caring and knowledgeable existed. We booked mummy in and she had the most wonderful time, she came out glowing and so interactive which she is not all
the time at home. The activities she had been doing while she stayed we took note of and because of the incredible staff we have taken them home with us to help mummy stay happy. She is very much looking forward to going back and our end goal is to have her as a full time resident in the future. We will be only leaving mummy here when we go away. Thank you.

I cannot thank Welwyn Grange enough for all their very kind help and support during what was a very difficult period for both my family and my elderly father, who has dementia. Following a fall, my father spent some time in hospital. Welwyn Grange kindly came to the hospital to carry out an assessment
on my father and, within hours, came back to us with the news that they would accept him into their care. When it comes to care homes, Welwyn Grange is what 'good looks like'! The care home itself is everything and more you could wish for. The communal areas of the building are beautifully decorated with stunning soft furnishings and fixtures and fittings. The bedrooms and en-suite wet rooms are immaculate, beautifully presented and made to feel very welcoming. The admin staff, carers, nurses and management team are all excellent - very professional, hugely caring and really want to do their very best to ensure their residents are living their best lives whilst in their care.

My father moved to Welwyn Grange from another care home when they opened in November. He was already very poorly and moved for end-of-life nursing care. He sadly passed away at the end of December but we will be forever grateful for the care, compassion and ongoing commitment from all the staff. When
we visited Welwyn Grange we immediately knew that this was the place for my father. The staff that showed us around were caring, informative and supportive. We were blown away by the beautiful, spacious bedrooms and comfortable lounge areas. Once my father arrived, he was well cared for by nursing staff and carers alike, nothing was too much trouble. They were patient, kind and always available for any help we needed. Activities and entertainment took place regularly for anyone that wanted to join in, led by a wonderful entertainment coordinator, my father did a lovely piece of art that we will always treasure. The food was of an amazing standard, and impeccably served. Thank you again!

From the moment I first visited Welwyn Grange and met the manager and some of the staff, I knew this was the right place for my Dad. Having had mixed experiences at a couple of other settings, we knew this needed to be right, and have had absolutely no regrets. Not only is it a beautiful setting and
spotlessly clean, everyone cares and there's a lovely sense of community. The manager, support staff, nurses, carers, chef and cleaners have all taken time to get to know Dad and to learn about him, caring for his wellbeing just as much as his health. Activities have been tailored to appeal to him as an individual as well as to the wider community. They have supported with medical appointments and liaising with the hospital. And the quality of the food far exceeds my expectations for a care home setting! As a family we feel well-informed. I can't thank the team enough for all they are doing for my Dad.

I'm a full-time carer for my husband. He has complex needs and so requires nursing care. He recently stayed at Welwyn Grange for a short period of respite. It's a beautiful brand new home with excellent facilities, including a fabulous cinema room where my husband really enjoyed watching his favourite
programmes on the big screen. The spotless bedrooms are spacious and comfortable with a smart tv and en suite wet room. The food is excellent. There is an activities programme and he loved a visit from the therapy dogs during his stay. Even though the smart new building was a big draw, the main reason I chose the home was the nursing team are extra to the care numbers and I felt confident he would benefit from individual care during his stay. Communication with the home is excellent. The manager and service manager took the time to get to know us before and during the stay. Staff are kind, caring and professional. I now plan to book regular short respite stays. Thank you to the manager and the team.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.723)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.723) out of 10 for Welwyn Grange is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 5.0 out of 5 from 5 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.7 out of 5 from 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.983 for Welwyn Grange is calculated as follows: ( (58 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 59 Ratings = 4.983

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.74 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Welwyn Grange is based on 5 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.5

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 104 registered maximum number of service users is 20.8. 5 Positive Reviews ÷ 20.8 = 0.24

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Referrals & Administration Manager

I have worked for the company for 6 years. My previous role was in the HR Department being one of the first team members and progressing to HR & Learning & Development Officer.

I have been involved with new staff from recruitment through to induction training and beyond; processing changes and leavers. I have built a strong relationship with everyone over that time and have now moved from one of our sister homes to Welwyn Grange; which I am very excited about.

Whilst my 3 children were growing up I worked as a Teaching Assistant at a school in my village and before they came along I worked in several insurance companies in the Customer Service Department.

Working with and helping people in any way that I can is very important to me.

I have a very busy social life, but I also like a bit of ‘me time’ to recharge my batteries by having weekends away with my partner in the campervan.

Likes: Dancing, Badminton and Socialising with family and friends with a nice glass of wine
Dislikes: Unkindness and Weak milky tea

Job Title: Chef

From a young age, I have always had a keen interest in cooking and used to bake every weekend with my father, so from an early age I knew that I wanted to be a Chef.

At 15 I enrolled in culinary school and completed my NVQ Level 2 in Professional Cookery and ABC Level 2 in Patisserie. A year later I started my career in hospitality as a Pastry Chef, working in a 2 AA Rosette Restaurant Here I would help with developing new and unique recipes to feature on the menu, as well as prepare desserts for weddings and other events for up to 400 covers.

At the age of 18, I moved into care as a Deputy Chef Manager, here I learned quickly and made my way up to Head Chef in under a year. I developed menus for the Home and for the Day Center, incorporating the dietary requirements of all residents and customers, into daily meals. This meant working a lot with the IDDSI (International Dysphagia Diet Standardisation Initiative) scale for modified foods and thickened liquids, as well as fortifying foods for those needing to increase or maintain their weight.

As a Chef, I always want to learn new things, so I decided to take the plunge back into hospitality as a Sous Chef, so I could widen my experience. I stayed for 2 years gaining more experience, when I saw the advert for a Head Chef at Potters Grange, a role I instinctively knew was perfect for me.

As Potters Grange is home to a maximum of 20 people, this family-like understanding makes it a lot easier to meet every individual’s needs and requirements, which means residents not only get the meals they like but they are cooked just the way they like it as well!
