The first thing that comes to mind is that The Downes doesn't suggest it's a care home, it is more like a hotel. All the staff without exception are extremely helpful and they go about their duties in a professional way. Sometimes they are not in my opinion fully appreciated. They are a credit to themselves.
The world would be a better place if there were more people like the staff of The Downes.

My husband went to The Downes to give me two weeks respite, as I am his sole carer. He suffers from Vascular Dementia and was very confused when he arrived. The staff were fantastic, he was whisked away and instantly involved in activities, so I was able to slip away. When I went to fetch him today,
he was very reticent about leaving. He has been wonderfully cared for in every way. His nameplate on the door has been personalised with a lovely logo. The staff gave me four pages of photos of him doing all the activities and on outings, so kind and thoughtful.

My father in law was treated with dignity and compassion by all of the team. They always made time for him and for us, making sure he was comfortable and had everything he needed.
The Downes has a real family feel to it and the dogs added comfort to us all.
I can't thank the staff enough for all that
they did for Dad.
I have already been recommending The Downes to family and friends.

I was transferred here from hospital to continue my health. I have found the staff and amenities very good to be with. Sad to leave everyone.

I was so delighted to have found this home for my mother. It offers far more than any other home I have visited and I visit a number of homes in my professional capacity. The staff are so kind and friendly, my mother has a beautiful room with a spectacuar view over the Hayle estuary. She has lovely
gardens to walk in when ever she wants. She really enjoys the activities and the many trips out.
My mother really appreciates the choice of food if there is something on the menu that she does not like care is taken to provide an alternative which she would prefer.
There is far more freedom than in other homes with no fixed bedtimes or time to get up. There are also very flexible visiting times and people can bring their dogs to see their relatives. I think the thing which my mother enjoys most are the 2 resident black labrador dogs. I would have no hesitation in recommending this home.

More water to be given at meals instead of squash. Far too sweet. Water taps to be shown how they work in the bathroom to go with the room for visually impaired.

A lovely building set in beautiful grounds overlooking the Hayle Estuary. Dads room was brand new - simple, but spacious with a large en-suite wet room. The whole place was spotlessly clean - every time I visited someone was cleaning something! The staff were excellent. I was particularly impressed
with the dedicated activities staff. From the first assessment with the managers until the day Dad had to leave, every member of staff we met was friendly, kind and supportive. As Dads dementia deteriorated and his needs changed, the managers were open and honest with us so that we could plan ahead. Communication with the family throughout Dads stay was excellent. I would recommend this home without hesitation.

Current Review Score: 8.7 (8.687)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.7 (8.687) out of 10 for The Downes is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.7 out of 5 from 4 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.0 out of 5 from 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.667 for The Downes is calculated as follows: ( (36 Excellents x 5) + (9 Goods x 4) + (2 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) ) ÷ 48 Ratings = 4.667

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.02 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for The Downes is based on 4 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 = 3.375

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 31 registered maximum number of service users is 6.2. 4 Positive Reviews ÷ 6.2 = 0.645

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
