La Fontana is on outskirts of Martock, surrounded by beautiful Somerset countryside. The team has really focused on everything someone living with dementia could need to ensure each person continues to enjoy the best of life.

They've installed sophisticated technology to give you and your family added assurance and peace of mind. Intelligent bedroom sensors detect movement and allow for gradual illumination in the room which can also alert carers/nurses to someone needing assistance.

Enjoy stylish and comfortable living in one of five thoughtfully designed suites. Each suite benefits from spacious communal areas and large skylight windows, allowing natural light to pour in. Their beautiful reminiscence area promotes a trip down memory lane, complete with sun lounge designed with beach huts and a seaside feel housing a sun lamp that can promote a feeling of wellness and relaxation.

An innovative care planning system, ensures staff know everything they need to about how you choose to live. A fun, engaging daily activities programme is tailored to suit the hobbies and interests of the people living in the home.

Outside residents find an elegant fountain and secure gardens with raised flower beds, vegetable planters, ponds and patios. A favourite with residents and the local community is La Fontana’s petting farm, home to rabbits, reptiles, chinchillas, birds to alpacas amongst other animals.

My father has been a resident at La Fontana for over 2 years now. The home cares for the most difficult and challenging cases of dementia and does an extremely good job under very difficult circumstances. My father is safe and cared for - perhaps not in the same way as if he was able to be at home,
but sadly this is not possible, and so we are satisfied that this is the next best option.

The home is kept clean and tidy and the food is of a good standard. They have looked after my Dads needs well, he is settled and calm in his environment which is as much as we could have hoped for.

Wendy, thank you for taking the time to write such a wonderful review of La Fontana. Each member of staff works tremendously hard for each and every resident and it's so touching to read your positive experience of your father living with us. I will be sure to share your words with all the team in the home. All the best

Generally, everything runs well. My only concern is lack of staff to cover breaks and in my personal opinion, this leaves residents at some risk during these times if remaining staff are providing care in a room for a resident. It leaves the floor unattended. However, on the many times, I've raised
this point, I'm told the staffing levels meet legal requirements so I guess there will be no change. Overall, I'm very happy with the level of care.

My mother has been resident since December 2017. The staff are attentive to her needs, speak to her and interact with her kindly and appear to like her. There is good communication with me and I have no concerns about her care at La Fontana.

My mother has been at La Fontana since 2013.
She is currently in a vegetative state sadly and so need optimum care and support. I cannot praise La Fontana enough. For their exemplary care for my mother. They know her well being incredible and any change to her health is reported immediately to GP and
family. Security is amazing as are all the staff, every single member. Somerset is very lucky to have this home serving the area.

Generally excellent. Staff are wonderful and do their very best. I have raised this point many times that there are not enough staff in each unit to cover breaks etc. In my view, it leaves a dangerous shortage that if two staff are providing personal care to a resident the others are unsupervised -
potentially at risk. I am always informed the home meets "the legal requirement" of staff.

I am a retired GP myself with 33 years experience of looking after patients in care homes and La Fontana is by far the best nursing home that I have ever visited! Spacious, light, airy, plenty of staff, lovely atmosphere and super care.

Since visiting my husband for the past three years or so, I can confirm that the residence is always kept clean - no smells. The staff are caring and in general, the majority are excellent. This is a very demanding job where patience and dignity are observed. Carers also support a relative visiting
who may be quite upset to see one's loved one with dementia.

My husband found the fact upsetting that other residents would help themselves to his belongings! He has been reasonably content (given his personal problems). He loves the food and has shown, at last, contentment with his surroundings. Have had big problems with clothes either going missing or being
replaced with something that is not his!

Staff getting to know the resident is essential for good care.
Overal plan of the building is good for dementia residents.
Large staff getting to know them. Some have language difficulties.
Nurses - poor connection with family, otherwise professional.
Overall care good with small concerns.

My mother has been a resident for the past six years and as her dementia has developed the staff have continued to provide a safe and secure environment for her care, always treating her with kindness and respect. The design of the building and spacious setting mean that she can be cared for in a pleasant
and appropriate environment.

My husband has been here for nearly a year.
He settled in straight away as the staff and management were so caring and gave my husband dignity and compassion with his complex needs.
The rooms are so spacious and furnished to a high standard and the bathroom is a wet room which is excellent.
The
gardens are outstanding and give the whole home a wonderful aspect. The food is always at a high standard with good variety.

Reception is easy to interact with and visiting access is good. There is an adequate number of staff and they are often visibly engaged with residents. Residents appear content within the limitations of their own state (e.g. dementia).
Refreshments are freely available and living and kitchenette facilities
are clean. My mother appears well cared for and communications from the care home indicate due attention to details of personal living (e.g. hair dressing, foot care, clothing needs).

Very pleasant home, facilities excellent, plenty of staff and clean and easily accessible. Entertainment/activities seem to be sporadic. In the beginning, Pa was taken out, but nothing since last year. Keeping me informed of Pa's welfare - very good.

On the majority, the home is very clean most of the time. Staff are friendly and helpful. However, my wife has a broken left leg and has to wear a brace during waking hours. Some care assistants cannot fit the brace, after 3 months, this is not ideal. The brace is fitted immediately when I report this.
The food and personal hygiene is above normal standards.

This purpose built home for dementia care has been a godsend to me as there is no way I could have cared for my mother. To say that she is a difficult customer is a huge understatement. I am totally in awe of the staff who have to deal with her and other challenging residents.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.154)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.154) out of 10 for La Fontana is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.3 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.828 for La Fontana is calculated as follows: ( (77 Excellents x 5) + (16 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 93 Ratings = 4.828

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.326 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for La Fontana is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 76 registered maximum number of service users is 15.2. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 15.2 = 0.526

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
