The staff are kind and caring. There is a range of activities my mum find rewarding, with the caring staff. We are always made welcome when visiting. The atmosphere is so friendly. The home manager is always available and has given support to our family.

We had to move Mum to this care home due to the previous home could not take her anymore because of her mobility issues. We were quite apprehensive to move her again. We came to visit Nicholas House as an option, and we were very impressed with the commitment of the staff, particularly one lady, she
has gone above and beyond to ensure Mum's needs were taken care of, and the staff can't do enough for her. She is always included in activities and joins in and feels included in the community of the home - can't recommend this home enough. Thank you for caring for Mum.

Mum has been in this home for about two months, and I can praise the staff that the care they provide is outstanding. My mum is being very well looked after.
Management is a very good team and treats Mum with respect, especially one member of staff.

Amazed by the activities offered to my relative. The food is absolutely amazing. The staff are very helpful and always smiling. Nothing is too much trouble.

A well-run establishment, safe and clean for residents and health matters are dealt with in a professional way. Plenty of activities during the day. I find that in the meals department food is sometimes served on flat plates. Alzheimer's/dementia patients find this difficult as they cannot cope with
cutting up food and the food ends up spread across the table. Food in small portions, cut into bite-size pieces in a bowl so they can use a spoon or fork is much better for them to cope with. Also, they are not as quick and take longer to finish a meal.

The staff at Nicholas House are brilliant. Our Mum has been here almost a year and she is very happy. She is well cared for, the food is excellent, lots of varied activities and entertainment so all residents can join in. It's spotlessly clean. In-house physio for those that need targeted help as well
as visiting physio for those that wish to take part in seated exercise. Hairdresser comes fortnightly, chiropodist about every 8 weeks. Staff were happy for Mum to have her own bedding, chairs and ornaments from home in her room, making the transition from her own home a bit easier for her. Her clothing is washed and cared for daily. GP visits weekly and residents can be put on the list to be seen at the request of relatives as well as staff. Our mum needs 24-hour assistance. Not only could we not have provided this in her own home, we would not have been able to provide the stimulation she receives at Nicholas House. To know she is happy and in safe hands has given us peace of mind.

Our mum moved into Nicholas House in April 2023, following 3 months in another home we were not happy with. Nicholas House is great and we feel safe leaving Mum in their hands. Nice clean, bright environment, specially built for purpose. Carers and staff are really nice. Food is great, restaurant quality
and I often have lunch with Mum, which I pay a small donation for. Loads of entertainment and outings. Mum gets taken to shops, garden centres and coffee a couple of times a week. Exercise classes. Physio. GP visits weekly. There’s a hairdresser who comes once a fortnight and a chiropodist.
My mum is prone to falls and broke her neck, which is why she decided to go into a care home. Unfortunately, she has recently broken her hip, we couldn’t fault the care when she came out of the hospital. Especially so as they have their own physio meaning she could leave the hospital as soon as possible. We’ve seen people arrive unable to walk and a couple of weeks later they’re walking with a frame.

Whilst this is dated December 2022 it relates to the period May to December 2022.
Mother went into care as she was unable to cope with single living and had become withdrawn and wasn't eating properly.
All the staff have been superb in their care, dedication, and encouragement that helped mother
regain weight and come back to being herself.
They are always approachable and helpful, encouraging to residents through interactive activities, trips out etc.
Unfortunately, we lost mother in Jan 2023 but during her last few months of her life she was happy and this was due to everyone from the management, kitchen, cleaners, carers. and all the other support staff.
I personally cannot commend this care home highly enough and have no hesitation in recommending them.

This has been an amazing experience for my father. The staff were, on the whole, very attentive, caring and considerate. The hygiene was outstanding in the home and the patients were always well presented. The catering was fantastic with lots of variety and an excellent chef who brought so much joy
to the residents. The downfall was the brand new van that rarely went on outings and no replacement for the activities coordinator for months.

Current Review Score: 9.5 (9.519)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.5 (9.519) out of 10 for Nicholas House is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.7 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.819 for Nicholas House is calculated as follows: ( (69 Excellents x 5) + (13 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.819

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.7 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Nicholas House is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 30 registered maximum number of service users is 6, which has been reached with 7 Positive reviews. Points = 1

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

“I have been working in care for the last 15 years. I started off in Home Care, which I found rewarding but wanted to do more and have more time with Residents. When Nicholas House opened it was time to make that move. I started here as a Care Assistant doing days and nights and worked my way up to Senior Carer, then care Supervisor which gave me the opportunity to pass on my experience to the new staff.

I was then offered the post of Deputy Manager in April 2018. I enjoy my job – we have a good staff team here and all work well together.”

After leaving school I went to college to study dance, growing up I had always wanted my own dance studio. But when my sister was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, she asked me to look after her, she didn’t want strangers in her home, so I quit studying dance to look after her. It was a difficult time, one day I was studying dance, and the next I was being taught how to peg feed/hoist/change incontinent pads.

When my sister passed away, I wanted to continue my career in the care industry and have since managed residential care and nursing homes. In 2012 I became a registered care home manager for a local care home; working hard and always managing to achieve “good” CQC ratings and finally “outstanding” in responsiveness.

Over the years, I have studied hard and completed courses in Dementia, Parkinson's, Medications, and Mental Capacity, and completed my Level 5 in Leadership and Management for Adult Care (RQF).

The home I was working in was sold and I made the decision to apply for the role of Deputy Manager at Nicholas House in May 2024. I have since been promoted to Home Manager.

Being part of The Nicholas House Team is like being part of a big family. The General Manager, Michele, staff and residents have shown me so much support and kindness.

I started working at Nicholas House in March 2022, before which I had a long career in the education sector. I started initially as the Receptionist and Administration Assistant and am now the Executive Assistant for Nicholas House, which I feel means I do a little bit of a lot of different things!

I support admin across all departments in the home, so I get to know everyone really well. It will usually be me who answers the phone, the door or responds to email enquiries which often means I am the start of everyone’s journey at Nicholas House – residents, families, and staff.

I very much enjoy welcoming everyone to the Nicholas House family.
