Hengist Field is a modern, purpose-built Home situated in the beautiful Kent countryside, close to the picturesque village of Borden. The Home’s dedicated and highly qualified team are committed to providing the highest quality of care and hospitality for residents.

With a capacity of up to 75 residents, each single room ensuite accommodation. The Home has five lounges, three dining rooms, sensory room, activity room, relatives’ room, purpose-built cinema and an onsite hair salon; all surrounded by large secure gardens with relaxing water features.

Hengist Field residents enjoy regular trips to the countryside and coastal towns in their minibus, along with trips to local country parks and garden centres, or a nearby pub for lunch. Residents are encouraged to remain active and pursue hobbies and interests, both old and new.

One of the first care providers to champion the importance of nutrition for the elderly and those with Dementia, Nellsar employ a Nutrition & Wellness Manager for their Homes. Hengist Field acknowledges that nutrition and hydration are an integral part of good health and well-being, delivering well-balanced, nutritious meals and snacks to residents every day.

Hengist Field also benefits from a Well-Being Team of fully-qualified holistic therapists who use nurturing touch, complementary therapies and relaxing treatments to improve residents’ quality of life and sense of well-being.

Employing high-tech care planning technology, Hengist Field care staff use the ®Nourish system, spending less time on paperwork and more time caring for their residents.

Hengist Field also use bespoke dementia care technology ‘interactiveMe’ as a way of further personalising their residents’ care, and as a tool for connecting individuals with their family and care staff around them. This personalised-online profile offers a wonderful tool for reminiscence too.

Having continued weekly to visit a resident who befriended my wife when she was resident, I observe the care and activities that the residents receive.
In general, the carers and other staff treat residents with care and respect their privacy. Attention is paid to engaging the residents in activities
appropriate to their various conditions. As with all providers of this service, occasionally agency staff are hired. A good standard of housekeeping is maintained with regular staff and in-house laundry.

My neighbour is very comfortable. She appears to be well looked after and kept nice and clean. I certainly wouldn't move her, she's settled in nicely and the staff know her little ways.
It's a very nice environment. On the whole, I am pleased I chose this nursing home.

Friendly, welcoming staff who have time to listen to any concerns. My mother is kept comfortable and is well looked after making her end of life care as painless as possible for her, family and friends. Have had cause to complain about Mum's care on 3 or 4 occasions now. Left in bed too often, not washed properly, staff slow to attend when requested, unpleasant ingrowing toenail not addressed until raised with a senior member of staff.
Discussed with Management team every time and promises were made
to prevent reoccurrence but issues still arise (today Mum was not cleaned properly and was wearing someone else's dirty trousers when my sister visited).

Both my wife and I are quite happy with the care that my father is being given. The only problem that we have is that his clothing seems to go missing. In the past my wife Brenda and I have had to go to the laundry room and retrieve my father's clothing, we were informed that the labels we had stuck
to his clothes had come off and that the best thing to do for recognition purposes was to write in the clothing with a laundry pen. Earlier this month we were told by one Hengist member of staff that if an item of clothing gets contaminated then it is disposed of. BUT when we were talking to another staff member on Monday (20th) they informed us that all "contaminated" clothing is washed in a 90-degree wash and NOT disposed of. We have purchased quite a lot of new clothing for my father recently. All of my father's clothing now has his name written inside in many positions on each piece of clothing. Still, he appears to have clothing gone astray.


At the moment this is our only concern.

Staff directly employed by the care home are wonderful. Problems do arise from some agency carers not knowing each client's individual requirements. The food is nutritionally ok but the presentation does not make it inviting to eat. The manager has an open door policy and can be spoken to anytime. Activities
promised for bedbound did not materialise.

My wife has been in care for almost six years at Hengist Field. I have been very happy with the level of care and the friendly way the management and staff have treated me. My wife is very happy and has always been very pleased with the care and compassion she has received.
The food which is cooked
in-house provides a well-balanced diet, although of recent months she has not been able to take much food or drink as she has become much weaker and has to be fed at all times by someone. I try to go to the home twice a day at mealtimes to feed my wife, as this relieves the staff of yet another time-consuming job. The room she has is very comfortable and is cleaned every day.

"Hello, I’m the Manager of Hengist Field Care Home in Sittingbourne. I joined the Nellsar family as Manager here at the Home in November 2018, bringing with me 34 years' Nursing experience from working in a variety of UK and overseas care settings. Our wonderful team here provide high-quality care while ensuring that our residents enjoy all aspects of life within our Home.


Hengist Field Care Home was opened in 2011 and the design fits in beautifully with the surrounding Kent countryside of Oast Houses and orchards. We have first-class facilities here for our residents to enjoy and are developing many new and exciting ideas and initiatives to enhance daily life within the Home. Our gardens and the surrounding area are stunning and these include a spectacular courtyard, sensory garden and an area where residents enjoy growing soft fruits in the summer.


On warm sunny days lunch is often served in the gardens and families are welcome to relax with loved ones and enjoy quality time together.We pride ourselves in promoting a caring, family-orientated atmosphere, where we extend our support to friends and families of our residents.
We have a Friends of Hengist Support Group to support relatives who find it helpful to share their experiences with others in similar circumstances and the desire to learn more about the illness or condition that affects their relative. We also hold Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends Information Sessions. These are very informal and are designed to give people a greater awareness and understanding of how Dementia may change their loved ones.


We like to make each day meaningful for residents of our Home. Our Activities team are always planning something different. Every week we have a range of organised activities, which may include; exercise classes, musical mornings, coffee mornings, food tasting, arts and crafts or musical therapy.


Our Well-Being Team are on hand to deliver one to one relaxing sessions which may be in the form of a massage, or aromatherapy which has wonderful benefits to the holistic health of residents. Our Cinema room plays a film of the day which runs twice a day every day – so our residents can enjoy the nostalgia of popcorn and an old movie. In the summer, we have BBQs every month, with live music – an opportunity for residents, relatives, friends and staff to get together and enjoy each other’s company.


A daily Lunch Club also allows residents living in different units within the Home to meet up, enjoy a meal and spend some time together in one of our tastefully decorated dining rooms.We extend a warm welcome to everyone who wishes to join us when we participate in charity events including Alzheimer’s Society Cup Cake Days and The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning organised by Macmillan Cancer Support.


We host relatives and residents meetings at which discussions are held about how families can become more involved and how we, as a Care Home, can continue to improve upon all aspects of our care and services provided at the Home. We implement any suggested new activities, or ideas, or menu suggestions, and then we meet again to discuss how well these were received."
