With staff who are passionate about enriching the lives of their residents, Rushfields has a warm, family feel. Some of the staff are extremely long-serving, having been with the home for over 10 years.

Providing residential, dementia, nursing and palliative care, they also provide respite care breaks, which can be booked in advance. These are ideal for family carers who would like to plan a short break themselves.

There are so many activities to enjoy, from gentle exercise sessions and skittles, to baking and themed celebrations. The home also has its own minibus, which is perfect for trips out in the summer months.

There are welcoming lounge areas to enjoy activities or spend time with loved ones, who are welcome at any time.

The bedrooms have ensuite walk-in wet rooms, with residents encouraged to personalise their rooms, with pictures and small items of furniture, to make them truly feel at home.

The local community are embraced into life in the home. From volunteers from the local school, who love to spend time with the residents, to the local church, who run a monthly service at the home. Entertainers and singers are regular visitors too, filling the home with music.

In the home’s hairdressing salon, residents can enjoy appointments with the mobile hairdresser, who visits every week. And there are also pampering sessions, with manicures and hand massages.

Home-cooked, nutritious meals are served in the dining rooms, with the chef preparing everything from roast dinners with all the trimmings, to homemade fish and chips every Friday. Residents can enjoy lighter bites such as freshly made soups, as well as cakes for afternoon tea. And every morning, the chef will make a delicious, cooked breakfast if desired.

Outside, there is an enclosed courtyard garden with raised beds, for those who enjoy a spot of gardening. This area is also home to Rushyfields’ three pet chickens!

Always short staffed. Have mentioned this on several occasions. Not enough entertainment or to give them a look out on the minibus which stands dormant. Residents need fresh air, not enough staff.
Food used to be better, not as good since menu change.
Staff are mostly good, have had problems in the
past, with some staff members.
Dad was given the wrong medication.

Dad was initially in residential care from January 2018 until June 2018. Although we were happy with his care, he wanted to come home and live with his family. He stayed with his daughter and grandson (main carer) for four months but his mental health deteriorated and he was re-admitted in October 2018
and moved to the nursing floor in January 2019. He has now been assessed for 1:1 care. The support staff are extremely patient as he can be very demanding. The care home has been a life line for the family. We visit daily, noticing the friendly, jovial nature of staff, general atmosphere and environment. Thank you.

Found the care home very clean and welcoming from first stepping foot in it. The carers have done a very good job looking after my Gran. She has enjoyed the outings out with them and says the food in the home is good. Before picking where my Gran would go I visited 8 care homes across Durham and this
was my favourite by far. I am very pleased with our decision.

Mam receives excellent care. The staff went out of their way to make Mam feel safe and settled. It gives excellent care and we know Mam is well looked after, so it takes the worry away from us, knowing Mam is well cared for. Mam is happy and settled.

My father was a resident in the home for just under a year after spending time in two other homes. This care home far exceeded the other homes in the way he was respectfully treated and was much more engaged.
The nurses and carers, particularly two of them, went above and beyond any expectations,
my family had and genuinely cared for my father’s welfare. He was properly supervised and never came to harm as he had done in previous homes.

My father has been in Rushyfields for about 6 weeks and is doing very well.
He has Lewy Body dementia in the latter stages. His care has been very good no complaints at all. He seems happy and settled. Staff are always happy to discuss matters. They are always cheerful.

This home has excellent standards of care, cleanliness, food and interaction with residents. The staff are not only very well trained but demonstrate care and commitment at all times. Much better in all things, 100% from a few months ago.
Meals have always been excellent. There is also a much better feeling in the home and an excellent manageress at the moment, just waiting to see the new manager start, if it stays the same the home will be flying.

My dad lived in this care home until he died in December 2016. During the 2 years and 5 months that dad stayed in this home (we would have moved him but he suffered from agoraphobia), there were 3 managers, the final one being the least competent of them all.


Staffing levels were regularly below

what you would expect and the level of care that my dad received was poor. He sat in his room every day and didn't come out or talk to anyone. The staff made some effort at first to try and encourage him, but this didn't last long at all.


I went to see him one day and yet again he was complaining that cream hadn't been put on his legs - he had cellulitis which was really nasty and in his care plan it stated that he needed the cream on his legs twice a day. When I asked the staff what had happened, I was told that the member of staff had forgotten!


I definitely would NOT recommend this home.

My relative was admitted to Rushyfields for Intermediate Care. All of the care home's staff seemed to be friendly, committed and conscientious but, in my opinion, there were several occasions when there were insufficient on duty. This was noticeable as my relative, who generally took meals in her
room, usually needed prompting to consume food and hot drinks before they cooled but she seemed to be regularly overlooked. Also, except in emergencies, the services of a doctor were not available on weekends. This once caused my relative to be without some essential medications for 3 days as they had not been re-ordered before the weekend and thus caused a deterioration of her health. As she was not able to walk she was offered no stimulation other than attention from physiotherapists, nor did she take part in any activities. Fortunately she was happy with her care and unaware of perceived problems.
