Barchester Hurstwood View is able to offer excellent 24 hour residential and nursing care alongside care for residents living with dementia.

Hurstwood View is located in East Sussex and is close to Ashdown Forest.

The nursing floor at Hurstwood View, known as Deer View Walk, has been created to provide an excellent level of care to all residents. Staff ensure a person-centred care approach at all times, whilst promoting and encouraging independence and empowerment of residents.

Memory Lane, the 1066 accredited dementia floor, offers excellent dementia care, ensuring a person-centred care approach at all times.

Hurstwood View's facilities include a nurse call points in all rooms, television and telephone points in all rooms, as well as Wi-Fi throughout the home. They have a large café area where residents can enjoy refreshments with their visitors at any time. There is also an outside seating area as well as a large garden, with panoramic views of the Ashdown Forest.

My mother was at Hurstwood View from the time it opened in September 2012. She was very well cared for in the Memory Lane Unit. This was now "her home" which she came to call it.
Staff really looked after her especially at the end of her life.
I get great comfort still going in to teach the residents
keep fit.

My husband has been in the home since may having initially gone for respite care only. It took a while for him to settle (and for me to adjust) but he is now extremely settled and well cared for, better than I could at home. The staff, both carers, auxiliary, kitchen etc are all very cheerful and helpful.
The carers take the time to get to know the residents and their likes/dislikes etc and the residents are never pressured to do anything they do not want to do. Visiting times are not limited and you are always made to feel welcome. The food is good and always varied. Tea and coffee are readily available, and cake/biscuits. My weekday visits are restricted to evenings so I do not see the activities but get reports from the carers when I visit in the evening or phone. I do feel there could be more activities on memory lane rather than downstairs. I think the laundry service could be improved. Sometimes the cleanliness could be improved, empty cups/plates etc removed from the lounge.

After several months spent in various hospitals, my Dad was so happy to have such a lovely place to call home. He appreciated the beautiful view from his window and established a good rapport with his carers. He told us that he hoped he could stay there until the end of his days. As his family we
were made to feel very welcome at whatever time we called to see Dad and encouraged to help ourselves to tea and coffee and homemade biscuits and cake. The rooms are all individually decorated, warm, and well equipped with good quality furniture, and there are several attractive and comfortable lounge areas. Most important of all, the staff are so caring towards the residents and helpful and welcoming to the residents' families. The residents are treated with kindness, patience and dignity.


Overall, I would not hesitate in rating the home as excellent.

The first thing that struck me about Hurstwood View is that it has a lovely welcoming and positive atmosphere and is not like other care homes I have looked at.
It is purpose built and very well laid out so everything feels visible and open.
The position of the home, the decor and and lovely garden
and views make it feel like home from home. The staff are very caring and organised, thanks to a compassionate and strong management team. All queries are taken seriously, recorded and dealt with.
The food is restaurant quality and no one is ever short of tea and cake!
I would very much recommend this care home to others for respite or permanent stays.

My father has been in Hurstwood View for one month having initially gone for two weeks respite.
My sister and I have been looking for a care home for a while and responded to a mail drop by this home. The moment we walked through the door we knew it would be suitable. Even though we hadn't made an
appointment the manager took time to give us a comprehensive tour and we were extremely impressed by the standard of the rooms, the communal areas, the outside space and also the friendliness of all the staff.
My father is settling in well. There is no pressure put on him to do anything he doesn't want to, he is always treated with respect and he particularly enjoys the high standard of the food.

I had just over two weeks respite care at my own request, on leaving hospital. All went smoothly thanks to the home's team liaising with the hospital staff. Hartswood met my needs admirably, giving me a relaxed background to convalesce and prepare to return to an independent life. Full support was clearly
there if I needed it but I appreciated the "hands off" approach and lack of "regime". The staff were outstanding and I admired their commitment especially to the most needy residents. The surroundings are most agreeable and the building well appointed.

I visited Barchester Hurstwood View last week to see if it was a suitable place for my father who suffers with dementia. Although we have now decided to move my Dad closer to us in Wales, I was very impressed with the ambience and facilities of the home. The Manager was extremely helpful and took
time to show us around and explain the day to day care we could expect for Dad. All the staff we met were very pleasant and the few we spoke to seemed very experienced in dementia care, and also very caring and understanding for individual needs. Everywhere in the home looked spotless and the communal lounges looked very welcoming and well thought out. To be honest, I'd put my name down now if I could!


I have marked the options as excellent as I was unable to submit my comments without completing each one, but this is purely based on an hour's visit.

I have found all the staff friendly, cheerful and very helpful. The property is clean and well maintained. My lady has settled far better than every expected. I have been reassured and feel happy that she is having the best care possible.

I began my career in the care industry in 1997, working in a small private care home for 17 years, which I enjoyed every day. I provided individualised care, support, social interaction, comfort & compassion to residents.
In 2003, I decided to study Nursing at Brighton University, as it had been my ambition since an early age. I continued to work at the care home during evenings & weekends, throughout my training and received my nursing qualification in 2006. Becoming a nurse gave me such fulfilment, along with a great responsibility, which made me extremely proud of what I do.
I joined Hurstwood View in 2012 - and that is where my journey at Barchester began.
I love to spend time with my family & friends and I also enjoy travelling. I played football for 15 years in a woman’s team, but I’ve hung the boots up now!

Sussex is a beautiful country with many interesting and historical places to visit. My next step will be a Nursing Degree. As a care practitioner I work closely with the General Manager, Registered Nurses, and Senior Carers to ensure that all our resident’s needs are being met and to a high standard.


I am very passionate about my job at Hurstwood View and I always ensure my work is completed to a high standard. At Hurstwood View we all take great pride in ensuring that our residents are well looked after, we spend time getting to know our residents and their relatives on a personal basis to enable us to care for them all in a person-centred way and respecting their individuality. At Hurstwood View we have a great support network from our General Manager – Kirsty and Barchester in general, Barchester has great progression opportunities within all departments, and they always encourage staff to progress within their career. At Hurstwood View our staff are friendly and welcoming people who are more like family than staff.
