St Margaret's Care Home offers nursing, residential, dementia, respite and palliative care. The home is located close to a number of parks and golf courses, and with great access to local amenities, St Margaret's is a warm and inviting residence in Newington.

Bedrooms are set across three floors, and each floor has its own living and dining rooms, meaning peace and quiet is never far away.

All furnishings and décor throughout the home are of an exceptionally high standard. They also have a large main garden with raised flower beds accessed from the ground floor, and two patio gardens used by residents on the first and second floors with fantastic views of Arthur’s Seat and Salisbury Crags.

Chefs prepare fresh, nutritional food on site, meaning residents can choose from a varied daily menu. Special dietary requirements will be catered for.

A dedicated activities coordinator supervises a comprehensive programme of events and excursions to keep all residents engaged and stimulated, though their participation, while encouraged, is entirely optional. Activities are planned in close consultation with residents and their families to ensure everyone has an interesting and stimulating calendar to look forward to.

My mother has been a resident here for almost a year now and is extremely comfortable and content. The facilities are good, the staff are extremely friendly and polite and all this combined gives me great peace of mind that she is being well cared for.

Nana had been in for respite a few times and moved in permanently in April. All the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Making the transition from home to St Margaret's as smooth as possible. Always reassured that Nana is happy and being looked after.

We are delighted with the care he has received. He is closely monitored, so any changes in his presentation, either physical or mental, are observed and dealt with appropriately. He is much less agitated since his admission and benefits from being in the presence of staff and other patients. He particularly
enjoys the visiting musicians!

My father stayed at St Margaret's for around six weeks. All the staff were so kind to him, which was the most important thing to me. I felt he was safe and well looked after in lovely surroundings. There was a good atmosphere among the staff, which made it a positive place to be. Thank you.

My aunt often says she wishes she had moved into St Margarets earlier as she is very happy there and the staff couldn't be nicer or do more for her. This is reassuring for me as I live in Ireland and am unable to visit often but when I have visited I found the standard of the home very high in all areas.
I have been kept informed of her health and been reassured of the care she will have in her final days. Thank you to all in St Margarets.

The staff I have talked to and met are all very pleasant, professional and caring. But, they are so very understaffed, seriously so. To speak to my cousin I sometimes have to call as many as six times to get an answer, and even then, I'm likely asked to call back in 30 minutes. Even worse than that,
the mobile phone that is used is horrendously crackly, and, more often than not, of a 20-minute conversation, will only be able to understand 6 maybe 10 minutes max. It is so frustrating and, for an older, frail person who suffers from dementia, it must really be exasperating. I have complained for many months about this and keep being told that they're looking into it. But, both my brother and I continue to experience this every time we call. As I told management, were my cousin not so frail, I would have no hesitation in recommending she be moved to a council home. Since my wife works in a council home and has told me that service is much better there.

For now, we conduct regular assessments of our residents' needs and use consideration of how the team are deployed, ensuring that residents' needs are met with safe team levels at all times. We apologise that you have experienced line interference in the home and we understand that this is not ideal. This is something we are aware of and have tried to resolve many times. We have had the lines assessed with no problems flagging up. The Home Manager has previously discussed different options with you to resolve this going forward and has explained the situation. Job Title: Home Manager

What is your professional background?


I began nursing in 2010 where I worked in various areas of the NHS before moving over into the care home sector. Studying an MSc in the Health and Well-being of Older People, gave me the skills and confidence to dedicate my career to this client group- an area I dearly love. I have previously held posts in Clinical Lead, Deputy Home Managers and Head of Care Lead Nurse positions while continuing to work for a local agency in supporting the NHS, Marie Curie and St Columba's Hospices. I have experience in General Surgery, Renal and GI, Gynaecology, Medical Assessment Unit, Cardiac High Dependency, Medicine of the Elderly and Palliative Care.



As well as being a home manager, you are also a registered nurse, why did you first get into nursing?


Nursing found me. Following personal challenges in my own life, I found that my empathy and compassion for people developed and the need to help others became my focus. It's a phenomenal responsibility being a Nurse and I feel very privileged to have been given this opportunity.


What one thing do you enjoy most about your job?


I enjoy the challenge of being a new Home Manager and the fast-paced, ever-changing environment that is care. The position I am in allows me to see care delivery from all angles while building a service that is true to the needs of the individual.


What was a defining moment for you?


Providing palliative care to a 34-year-old lady with stomach cancer. At the time I cared for her, she had a son the same age as mine and had been diagnosed 2 weeks before her death. I learnt that day the importance of living in the moment and for being thankful for my family and son. You can't dictate the future but you can enjoy the present.?


What interests you outside of work?


I am a huge sports fan with special interests in rugby and football. Manchester United is where my heart will always be. I also enjoy walking with my dogs and spending time with my 5-year-old son. I also enjoy watching movies especially Sci-fi and thrillers as well as listening regularly to music. I have a personal interest in German history and sport.
