Cairdean House is a modern, purpose-built care home in the beautiful village of Colinton, Edinburgh. The dedicated team offers specialist nursing, residential and dementia care within a home that has been designed with the needs of people living with dementia in mind.

Cairdean House has a homely feel, with lots of spaces where residents can relax and socialise, such as the coffee shop, cinema room and hair salon. My brother required full-time nursing care urgently six weeks ago and Cairdean House was recommended to us as being able to accommodate his needs. He went in initially for four weeks respite care but is so settled that he is now planning to stay permanently. Right from my initial enquiry, the customer
relations manager could not have been more helpful in making the move as smooth and stress-free as possible. She has resolved every request and minor teething problem to help him settle, efficiently and sympathetically. My brother looks happier and more relaxed than he has for a long time. The staff are friendly and kind and he is taken out to the garden daily to visit the rabbits! He is also enjoying the food very much! I have no hesitation in recommending Cairdean House as a welcoming and caring home.

It was a huge decision to move my dad up to Edinburgh from the house he had lived in, for 67 years in Manchester, but after the death of my mum, two years previously, he was lonely and not taking good care of himself. Not being able to see him for months on end due to Covid restrictions was very stressful.
I knew about Cairdean House and it was my first choice. Fortunately, there was a room free when I made a preliminary enquiry and things moved pretty quickly. My main contact at Cairdean guided me through all the procedures necessary to bring Dad north of the border. She is friendly, always contactable and totally understood the emotional upheaval this move meant to both my dad and myself. Every morning for the first few days, the customer relations manager would email to give me an update on dad’s settling-in progress plus photos of him in his room during the first week’s isolation period. Now, two weeks on, he is happy, well cared for and has made new friends. For what more could you ask!

After a prolonged spell in hospital, I was advised that my wife required full nursing care as she no longer had mobility. Finding a care home in the middle of the Covid crisis, that was able to meet her needs, was very, very difficult. Principally because being able to visit and view a home and its
facilities was impossible.
The Cairdean staff was extremely helpful, and after intensive discussions, was able to offer a room which seemed acceptable. An important part of the process is to have a comprehensive website which has detailed information and photos of the facilities. A number of other homes sounded good but were unable to provide this.

I have found the help and support has been most helpful in the first two weeks of my sister-in-law's stay and how informative the staff are and extremely caring, she is very happy and content. My mum has been in Cairdean House care home for a number of years now. The decision to move her into a care home was very difficult and upsetting so getting the right one was very important. Prior to Cairdean House she was in 2 other homes, neither of which we feel gave her the same quality of care
she receives in Cairdean House. Prior to Covid our family visited regularly and looked forward to seeing her, carers and other residents. We always feel she is being well looked after. During Covid, although at times unable to visit, we have been kept up to date with at least weekly phone calls on how she is doing. Unfortunately, due to Mum's dementia, Skype calls are not an option but we always look forward to seeing the Facebook posts of what activities they have been up to. Having Mum in Cairdean House during Covid has been a relief knowing that she has been well looked after and we can't thank all the staff enough.

Understandably, our sister, aged 62, who had motor neurone disease, was very anxious about going into care. We were worried about her too as we knew we wouldn't be able to see her daily as we had, due to Covid. The staff made her very welcome from day one. Each one was amazing and she was an individual
to them - as were the other residents! Staff cared for her exceptionally well, making her feel at home, became friends with her (which she so needed), included her in activities and kept us informed at all times. The staff learnt from motor neurone disease professionals as her disease progressed and this they did amazingly well, ensuring our sister felt safe at all times. Our sister enjoyed the company - lots of fun times, but she also felt cared for and knew the staff were there for her 24/7. I cannot praise the staff at Cairdean House highly enough. Every one of them was kind, worked well as a team (wanting the best for the residents and each other) and wanted the best for our sister. So thankful to them all!

Our Mum has only just been transferred to Cairdean and although we have not been able to visit inside the care home due to Coronavirus restrictions, we cannot thank the staff enough for making the transfer so stress-free. The staff set up mum’s room with her personal possessions and took pictures for
us. Every member of staff I have spoken to knows who Mum is and that she is a new resident. The customer relations manager has kept us informed every step of the way and personally spent time with Mum when she first arrived. I received a message from Mum via the customer relations manager to say that (after only three days) she was settled, the food was delicious and the staff were lovely! The manager also took the time to ask how my sister and I were coping with it all. As I cannot really comment on some of the facilities I have simply marked ‘good’ however if our first interactions are anything to go by I have no worries at all that they will be excellent.

During these difficult times, the Customer Relations Manager kept me fully updated on my mother's admission process, always contacting me when she said she would and providing all paperwork. Since admission, I have had daily contact on how she was settling in. Although not been there long my mother

My mother (now 88) has been in Cairdean House since November 2018. I live in London so I can't visit her often. However, my brother and his wife live about five minutes' drive away from Cairdean so are helpfully close. I am always impressed when I see Mum -- she seems clearly happy to be there. She
has featured in several photos on the home's Facebook page, though less so lately as she is physically quite frail at the moment (though mentally pretty alert).
I am always impressed that the staff clearly care for the residents. The home is invariably spotlessly clean and tidy.
Mum had two episodes recently where she was very unwell but both times she pulled through, mainly, I believe, down to the care and attention she got from the staff.
During the pandemic, the care has still been excellent; the home had some tablets so I could speak to Mum by Skype when I wanted to. There have been relatively few scares, for which I am so glad. And there have been weekly updates on how things are.

My mother-in-law has been very unwell during the current pandemic situation and Cairdean have been fantastic at keeping us updated with phone calls, skype calls and allowing us to arrange our indoor and outdoor visits. I have even been able to wave at her through the window! It has been so difficult
during Covid and the wonderful staff have been so professional and hard-working, it is very good to know that she is in such good hands and in such a caring environment. I cannot praise the nursing staff highly enough.

My mother returned to Cairdean in February 2019 after a spell in hospital, for palliative nursing care, in the expectation that this would be for a few weeks. She died in December, having been confined to bed for 10 months. She volunteered right up to the end, how comfortable she was - a real tribute
to the caring and nursing staff, who actively managed her medical care. We have been impressed by the engagement of staff with residents, getting to know them, and spending time talking, whether in the common area or in their own rooms. This care was also extended to family and visitors - asking after infrequent family visitors, making sure that occasional visitors from a distance were provided with refreshments or a meal and showing an interest in our well-being. This attitude included the front-office staff and those who organised activities for residents. To describe the care as 'professional' is correct, but it doesn't capture the warmth of the relationships that developed.

When I arrived to visit found a group of happy residents singing 'My Bonnie lies over the ocean' with a wireless speaker providing music! They later danced The Twist and the afternoon ended with a cup of tea. Staff engaged and helpful.

The care home has lived up to my expectations. The staff are caring and attentive and very pleasant. Any issues with my husband are dealt with quickly and the staff are always aware of how my husband is. The home is designed well with the units being of a manageable size for individual attention to

My mum moved to Cairdean House from Dumfries in February this year. It was a really big move for her - for all of us, however, she has settled in really well. I have been very impressed by all of the nurses, carers and other staff involved in the day to day care of my mum and the home itself is lovely.
Friends and family who visit are made very welcome and there are many activities arranged on a weekly basis. I would recommend Cairdean without hesitation.

1, I really like the small unit layout but has also the ability to mix in a larger communal area and to move to other seating areas to offer variety when visiting.
2, Caring staff, especially as now with better continuity that is so important, not only for residents but also relatives.
3, Good variety
of activities but would like to see more small group activities and evening opportunities as many residents will have had an active social life, e.g. concerts, talks, etc.
4, As in many homes, more interactive conversation is always good.

I feel my husband is well looked after due to being badly affected by Parkinson's Disease and dementia. However, there has been such a change of staff recently. A number of people who were very helpful to me, as well as my husband, have obviously moved on elsewhere. For a few weeks, my husband was given
a bath occasionally, which he obviously enjoyed, and now I've been told that it will no longer happen due to health and safety reasons. The is very upsetting. He really needs to be taken to some of the weekly sessions. Certainly, he should be taken to the monthly church service that takes place in the cafe area. He has always been a church member.

My husband has Lewy Body Dementia and has settled so well into Cairdean. The staff communicate very well with me and have worked hard with my husband to help him settle and reduce his anxiety. He is much younger than most of the residents but the activity team here have him joining in and enjoying so
much. It has taken a lot of the pressure off me. I will comment on the rooms, which are bigger than the average we viewed, with windows easy for him in his chair to watch what’s going on outside. The wetrooms/bathrooms are also spacious.
