The skilled team at Bowes House care home delivers a variety of services, from short respite stays through to full-time nursing and residential care, as well as specialist dementia care. The Hailsham home blends old and new, incorporating part of the old Victorian brewery buildings, dating from 1887 into a new-build facility.

The home is divided into suites, each with its own lounge and dining room, creating a 'community within a community'. The en-suite bedrooms have a flat-screen TV and 24-hour nurse call system. Ground-floor bedrooms open directly onto patios in the courtyard or garden. Outside, there are herbal, sensory and butterfly gardens, with plenty of seating to relax and spend time with friends and family on warmer days.

On arrival - initial meetings with management went very well. The assessment carried out with professionalism.
A few hiccups regarding mum's care initially but all rectified within hours of our next visit. Thanks.
Mum has settled in quite well and looks forward to her long stay.

Our experience and transfer getting my dad from hospital to Bowes House was absolutely brilliant. The staff did a fantastic job - liaising with the staff in hospital and us (the family) - super, super efficient!

Staff were extremely helpful when arranging for my ex-husband to be transferred from hospital to be nearer to his immediate family in Hailsham. Without their guidance and help I honestly don't think we would have been able to get him transferred.

Bowes House is everything a care home for the elderly should be. The most important consideration is that my aunt is happy to call Bowes House "home".
In every aspect, I rate Bowes House "excellent". The building is light, airy and warm. The staff caring, welcoming and warm with sufficient time to
ensure the well-being of all residents. Food and drink isn't "institutional", ample in quantity of good quality with variety/choices to cater for all diets. Planned activities ensure residents maintain interests, are participating and encourage enjoyment.

Mum has been at Bowes House for 6 months in the dementia unit and is very happy there. The staff on the dementia unit are wonderful - unfailingly kind and upbeat and professional. Mum always looks amazing as they take care to choose her most glamorous clothes with her and are always trying out different
approaches to make her happy - favourite foods, drinks and music. She is more content there than I have seen her since this dementia journey started 5 years ago and loves all the staff - her face lights up when she sees them and they seem to get equal pleasure in seeing her. I know that she is very well looked after and I can trust the staff and the home to care for her to the highest possible standard. Mum has a lovely room overlooking the courtyard and enjoys watching the birds and the clouds and equally enjoys being in the main dining room where there is a lovely atmosphere and always something going on.

The staff are cheerful and kind. My wife is being well looked after and is very comfortable at Bowes House. I spend a lot of time visiting my wife and the team have made me feel very welcome. I am very pleased with the care my wife is receiving.

Although front of house gives the impression of a well-run establishment, care and staffing need to be addressed. There is no continuity of night staff and staffing levels. Particularly with health and safety issues. When the resident requests to see the doctor for an appointment this is not always
done and advice/prescription may follow.
Personal hygiene could be improved. General housekeeping and nutrition are very good.

I understand that the home manager has been in touch with you regarding some of the points above, and has hopefully been able to alleviate any worries you may have had. We are incredibly proud of the care we offer at Bowes House and our excellent team, which we feel is reflected in our CQC report, reviews on carehome.co.uk and elsewhere, and also our high satisfaction scores for relatives with loved ones in the home.


In regards to staffing levels, I would like to assure you that we always make sure we have the right numbers of team members across all our suites in the home, day and night, seven days a week, in order to run a safe, caring and high-quality service for all residents. There may be occasions where we have to use agency team members, such as to cover colleague holidays or illness, but we are very lucky to have some excellent agency staff who know the home and residents well, so there is always a continuity of care. We also have a dedicated GP that visits the home three times a week as part of his contract, and also attends at other times on request. We work very closely with the GP, as well as other healthcare specialists, to make sure every resident receives the highest levels of care and support whenever they need it and on an ongoing basis as their needs may change.

I was reluctant to come into a home while my daughter was away on holiday but my stay at Bowes House has been like a holiday for me. The staff have been wonderful, nothing has been too much trouble. I will definitely come back if my daughter goes away again.

I’m passionate about my role and the home.


I like to see lots of smiles and interaction with staff and residents. A good working day for me is to know that I have given my all to my team and to residents, knowing that they have all had a good day and that the care they’ve received has been the best.


Before joining, I’d worked in independent care homes for ten years. I wanted to stay in the care sector while developing my skills and career. Care UK really helps you to progress.


I think my proudest moments at Care UK were being nominated for the Team Leader of the Year award in the Care UK Residential Care Services Awards, and then being promoted to my current role.
