Having visited several care homes while looking for a place for my husband Hambleton Grange was by far the most pleasant. It was bright and cheerful and had a home-like feel. No unpleasant smell or chairs around the outer of the room. It was lovely to have a quiet lounge. Somewhere to be a little more
private if a few family members were to call. The majority of the staff were lovely but there is always room for improvement. Need to keep more permanent staff and less agency.

My mother has been a resident for nearly five years, and in all that time I cannot fault the care and compassion shown to her. Even at the end, the staff treated her with respect and dignity, but also with love. I can only thank the staff for all they did for my mother's care and wellbeing.

After 2 years at this home, Mum had to leave when they said she needed dementia nursing care which is not provided there.
Both a council assessment and the home Mum moved to stated she didn’t need nursing care so does this home simply not want residents who become difficult?
This home disappointed
in several ways after this:-
-   Calls from carers on subjects deserving management attention like DNR decisions
-   Mum still in bed (smelling of urine) at 4:30pm, deemed “unacceptable” even by the manager
-   Mum (again) being sent to hospital alone in an ambulance and in A&E for 3 hours
-   Mum’s teeth being lost, having to leave this home without the top set
-   Several requests for a haircut not actioned leaving a relative to cut it
Most upsetting was finding Mum’s wedding ring missing on the day she left. 3 times I was told someone would call me, but no one ever did.
There are real stars amongst the staff, but issues remain in front line care decisions and actions.
Luckily Mum’s settled well in her new home where staffing is noticeably higher.

Placing a loved one into care is such a difficult and emotional decision however the family feel that our dad going to Hambleton Grange has been a positive experience. The building is clean and tidy, the rooms are a good size, well equipped and maintained and the staff are friendly and accommodating.
Managers always listen to any queries or requests. They have got to know our dad well, and are familiar with all his ‘quirks’ and have learnt how to deal with them. They have gone out of their way to mark special occasions such as family birthdays and his own 90th. Although we would have loved him to remain at home, we all recognise that he is much better off being looked after and in many ways is calmer being away from the responsibilities he felt were in his shoulders being at home. Of course, he has good and bad days and I am sure that he will react better with some carers better than others, but that is human nature and not a reflection on staff. We know he is safe and well cared for.

Making the decision for dad to go into care was tough as it meant mum and dad living separately after nearly 65 years of marriage. He had a few sessions of respite which worked well and has been a permanent resident for nearly 6 months. He’s calmer without the stresses of trying to manage at home, has
settled well, and mum’s quality of life has improved too.
Staff are fantastic and there is always someone available if you have anything you want to discuss. They go the ‘extra mile’ to make their residents feel special - we had a wonderful 3 generation family celebration to mark dad’s 90th birthday last month and I will always treasure my memories of that day. Dad began his working life in the ‘tea trade’ and staff organised a special day for him to experience the present day equivalent at Taylor’s, Harrogate. Dad loved it!
Hambleton Grange is well run, clean, food is of good quality, I am always made to feel welcome, and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others.

In July 2018 it was decided that my wife would go into Hambleton Grange for two weeks to give me a rest. I noticed after about three days that she was looking much happier than when she was at home and she agreed with me that she was. A day or two after this I asked her how she would feel about staying
there, she said she would be happy to do so. I think one of the reasons for this is that the staff are so pleasant and helpful and she gets on very well with them.

The standard of care my mother received was very high and the fact she was content is a testimony to that.
To many of the staff, it was obviously more than just a job and they showed they really cared. The support and concern showed to us, her family, in the last few days of her life was much appreciated.

My dad has been resident at Hambleton Grange since April this year; we’ve consistently been pleased and impressed by the quality of care he has received. Since his dementia has worsened, he has lost his mobility and is dependent on wheelchairs and hoists but in spite of these issues, the staff, knowing
of his great love of trains, managed to take him on a trip to the National Rail Museum in York. The day meant so much to him and I’d like to say publicly how brilliant the staff were. Thank you!

Mum has been living at Hambleton Grange for 4 years and has had the most professional care in every aspect of her life. The staff are the biggest asset and know mum personally and understand fully her likes and needs.
The food has been of a consistently high standard, even when mum has had to rely
on a soft food diet
The cleanliness is consistently good. The only complaint has been the confusion of mum's laundry, as some of her clothes, ( and shoes and slippers) have gone missing and she has other people's clothes in her wardrobe. Mum is always dressed in matching clothes and jewellery, which impresses us that someone has taken the time every day to do this for her
The staff on reception are always friendly and professional.
We have noticed more recently a higher turnover of staff which can make it more difficult to discuss mum's needs.
No matter when we turn up for a visit we are made most welcome and invited to help ourselves to tea and coffee

I am not able to visit my mum as often as I would like but I telephone every day. As well as transferring my call to my mum, the Hambleton Grange team give me an update eg. to prompt her about a chiropody appointment or to let me know she enjoyed a particular entertainment, activity or new menu choice.
This helps mum and I connect, which is important when dementia can leave those affected feeling disorientated. I feel she is receiving the best care and this is good for mum and good for me.

We are very happy with the level of care and commitment the residents receive from the staff. All tasks are undertaken and no fuss is made. The residents are treated as individuals but can collectively join in activities should they wish to. We have noticed since the new manager has arrived an increase
in the number of outings, organised visitors coming to the home and the 'pop-up restaurant' events. The service user's rooms are well kept, bright airy and modern. Communal areas are bright and clean.

My mother has many needs as she has advanced Alzheimer's. Staff are caring and treat her with dignity and respect. The home is always clean and her dietary requirements are well catered for. Sunday Lunch: As the 'food' often occupies a great deal of the conversation when I visit Mum, I thought I would join her for lunch one day. When I asked the staff they were so accommodating and happy for me to be there. So, on Sunday I collected Mum from her room and we joined many of the other residents
waiting for lunch - this was maybe ten minutes and we chatted away. (As Mum has poor eyesight she often tells me it is an hour's wait!!). It was both a real pleasure for me to listen to stories of their lives, especially the debate of having Yorkshire pudding before lunch or with it! and to see some of the residents (who tend to keep to their rooms throughout the day) interacting with each other, expressing genuine care for each other. As for the staff; there are not enough words to describe their care and total consideration for each and every person. They know exactly how to offer choices, what everyone could or should eat. Even the question "where are the parsnips" was responded to brilliantly (there was actually no room on the plate for any more of anything, but the carer asked the cook if parsnips could be on another day). The choice of meat was chicken and beef and one or two of the residents said the beef was tough. However once cut along the grain it was fine. False teeth and blunt knives don't go too well with beef). Once again the carer was able to talk to the residents about the meal and nothing was overlooked. If I had not been at lunch the message I would have been given by Mum would have been about what Mum had said other than what actually took place. The pudding was delicious and again choice was offered, followed by tea and coffee. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and everyone was treated as the unique individual they are. Some residents wanted to return to their rooms, some to stay a while and some even had their meal delivered to their room. My whole experience felt 'special'. We were all truly cherished. I cannot thank the carers enough for all they do (or have done) for my Mum (and did for my Dad when he visited at Hambleton Grange during the last confusing months of his life). Hambleton Grange is a wonderful place, always has been from the day it opened, but don't take my recommendation, go and see for yourself. The feeling of being loved and cared for will enfold you the minute you walk through the door.

Lindsey joined Hambleton Grange when it opened in July 2013. Coming from a banking background, she has enjoyed the challenges which a career change brings and finds her current role particularly fulfilling. Lindsey understands the vast array of emotions felt when people come to look at the possibility of moving into residential care and accordingly she does her best to make the process of enquiring, viewing and ultimately moving as easy and stress free as possible. Her favourite part of her role is getting to know the residents and their families, and joining in with the various daily activities which are on offer at the home.
