Having visited friends in many care homes, I had great misgivings and was very apprehensive about becoming a short-term user after hospitalisation. Brook Court was a very pleasant surprise - in fact, I actually enjoyed my one-month stay! Overlooking a golf course it resembles a smart hotel with attractive
garden areas. It has good facilities including a coffee shop for meeting friends; cinema: comfortable lounges with armchairs grouped around small tables creating a ‘homely’ atmosphere – no question of residents sitting in a circle watching television all day long! I very much appreciated such independence. The dining rooms resemble restaurants - meals were excellent with a choice large enough to satisfy all users. I had a lovely room with ensuite facilities and a magnificent view. The staff were charming and professional and did their utmost to make my stay agreeable. I wish to thank them all for their kindness, care and support during my ‘holiday’ at Brook Court.

Whilst care for older people is quite costly, with both my mother and father in the same care home at a cost of 100k a year.
Mother has just passed away and the care shown to us by the home has been excellent in her passing.
Staffing levels are sometimes at their limit with agency staff often needed
We
visit my father every day at present, when we are not there we know he is cared for well, although due to the staff levels all the residents want is someone to talk to.

We are grateful for your constructive feedback and are delighted with the positive comments and scores for the care and support we provide. We use a dependency tool to ensure staffing levels are safe and appropriate for all residents in Brook Court, which is reviewed regularly. We are also pleased to confirm that all our care vacancies have now been filled and we are currently using minimal care agency staff. Your feedback is important to us and we thank you for taking the time to share your views.

My wife was admitted to Brook Court in February 2016. She had dementia with short-term memory loss, was unable to dress or feed herself. She qualified for continuous nursing care and admitted on an end of life. She quietly passed away in October 2016.
Brook Court was purpose built some three years
ago, all rooms are of a good size, well furnished with ensuites. They are regularly cleaned and there is a good laundry service.
Whilst these are points to consider more important is the quality of the staff and care provided. At all times my wife was treated with kindness and excellent nursing care. Carers respected and interacted with her.
I could not have found a nicer place for her to end her days.

My husband died on June 17th. He had been in the home for 2 years and 8 months. The 1st year was excellent. Carers had time to talk to residents and were happy to do their duties. Over the rest of the time as the home filled up, there were not enough staff and they were often so stretched and tired
- I felt very sorry for them. The coffee shop was a good idea but was closed quite often because of lack of staff - The last weeks of my husband's life were very good with caring sisters and all the staff making our family welcome to make a peaceful end.

We’re grateful for your feedback and are delighted with the positive comments and scores for the care and support we provide. We would also like to thank you for the constructive feedback. We have recently reviewed our staffing levels and since our occupancy has grown we have put in additional support, particularly around busier periods. We would also like to assure you that our coffee shop is open every day to residents and visitors. There may be times when our hostess is unavailable to serve you directly; however, visitors are very welcome to help themselves to refreshments. We hope that this has addressed your concerns but if you do have any further feedback the home manager will be happy to discuss it with you in person.

My mother went as a resident to Brook Court after a period in hospital having broken her hip and was unable to care for herself at home. She suffered from dementia and had suffered from expressive dysphasia that resulted in her loss of speech (over two years before entering Brook Court) Mum enjoyed
her time at Brook Court. The nursing staff were very helpful and dealt with her medical needs, particularly in two incidence where she fell and needed hospital attention. The carers were kind, sympathetic to her needs and very attentive, particularly in ensuring they understand her condition and ways to communicate. They kept me fully informed of any problems in mum's care requirements, as well as providing a safe, friendly and professional setting.

The personal care my mum received was, at all times, exemplary and she was treated with dignity and respect at all times. I cannot praise care staff highly enough and the end of life care was superb. They do a very difficult job and are frequently understaffed but were always most obliging. Food quality
in the year mum was there has varied enormously, but I never felt it reflected adequately the high fees paid. Sometimes it was downright poor and it was never of a high enough quality.

We have been visiting our close friend for nearly two years and have always been so impressed by the courtesy, kindness and even more so the patience and understanding that the staff exhibit in what is never an easy set of circumstances and frequently very taxing ones.
The other significant factor
that we notice is the total cleanliness and tidiness of the home which never falls below this high standard.
In the ever increasing age levels in this country the need for such a high quality of service will surely be so important and equally hopefully valued.

Current Review Score: 9.4 (9.405)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.4 (9.405) out of 10 for Brook Court is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.8 out of 5 from 9 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.833 for Brook Court is calculated as follows: ( (85 Excellents x 5) + (17 Goods x 4) ) ÷ 102 Ratings = 4.833

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.572 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Brook Court is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 67 registered maximum number of service users is 13.4. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 13.4 = 0.672

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

Job Title: Home Manager

I started my career as a Peripatetic Home Manager, working across the UK, making sure care homes met the regulator's standards.

I joined Care UK in 2016 because I felt it would be a supportive and rewarding company to be a part of and I was correct.

I’ve seen the high standard of care for residents and great teams. Everyone is very committed to ensuring that every resident is happy and cared for. There’s always a lot to do in my role, but by far my favourite part of the day is when I walk around the home, checking everything is okay, and chatting with residents, relatives and my team.

I enjoy getting to know the residents and welcoming new people into the home.
