The Alder House in Nuthall provides high-quality resident living facilities as well as dementia and respite care.

Residents benefit from comfortable and spacious bedrooms, complete with ensuite facilities. Companionship suites are also available for couples who would like to stay together.

Visitors who come to Alder house are always made to feel welcome and a part of the Alder house family. They have a fantastic, consistent staff team that know the resident care needs well. The home is supported by a fantastic regional team who ensure the high quality standards are maintained.

Their wonderful residents love to have family pets and children coming in to visit. The homely warm atmosphere exists throughout the home. Special attention is paid to those with dementia, as shown by the café, which is full of mementoes from the past days.

A full programme of daily activities, including maintaining body strength, is supported by volunteers. The atmosphere is lively and fun and residents enjoy gardening, regular cinema showings, going out on Sundays and eating well. There is no need for residents to venture out if they don't want to as they are able to have their hair done or enjoy hot refreshments in the onsite hairdressers and café.

Good relations are maintained with the local community and the neighbouring Avery home, Acer Court.

Alder House has been fantastic for my mother. Her dementia has worsened over the three years she has lived here and the amazing staff have adapted her care needs as necessary. She is very settled and I have real peace of mind knowing that she is being so well cared for. Thank you.

My father passed away in March 2021 after spending 15 months at Alder House. Although he was declining throughout his time there the staff continued to give him the attention, love and compassion he deserved and would have appreciated. Visits were curtailed by Coronavirus but staff always helped him
with phone and video calls and stayed with him until the call was over. The staff took it in turns to sit with him during his final days and made it possible for the family to say their goodbyes and we are deeply thankful for that. Thank you for your care and compassion.

My father, who is almost 97, has been at Alder House for nearly 3 years. At first, he was upset and confused about the sudden change in his life, but he was treated with such kindness, sympathy and understanding by all the staff there that he soon settled down and it is now his home. He has a lovely
spacious room with a big bed, en suite and TV, and use of the comfortable, bright living room. Should he wish he can use the cinema, cafe or library too. The dining room is organised like a restaurant and the generous meals always look and smell delicious. I am so impressed with the efforts that the staff make to engage and involve the residents in a variety of fun activities. Dad, who has increasing trouble with dementia, has been helped to write his life story and is treated with respect and dignity by the always approachable staff. Whenever I visit he looks happy and contented. We are so glad we chose Alder House and can't recommend it highly enough.

I don't normally write reviews but I felt the need to. My nana came for respite care and let's face it our loved ones never like to leave home. At first, I did feel guilty for needing some time to recharge my batteries. This care home was by far the best choice and reassured me that my nana would be
given a high standard of care. My nana is very particular and she loved being here. I've seen a few and they are shocking. Alder House is beautiful, clean, wonderful staff, a warm friendly welcome, they couldn't do enough for you. Alder House, will always be my first choice for my nana and knowing she's in the best possible care, it allowed me to relax and enjoy valuable time with my family. Thank you.

Sadly my mum passed away. She went into Alder House struggling with dementia, chronic loneliness, anxiety, angst and was refusing to eat, drink or tolerate carers. Amazingly, due to the understanding, patience and care of the staff, she soon settled, made friends, put on weight and was far less anxious.
Our regret as a family is that she didn't live long enough to experience her newfound contentment for longer. Hospitalisation for a minor chest infection and the contraction of Covid took her life within days of admission to the ward. Thank you to all the staff for giving her a better quality of life and their caring contact with us as relatives in a very difficult time. Professional, genuinely caring people.

I wish to say thank you to all staff involved in caring for my mother. I found the staff to be professional at all times and in a friendly manner. I am grateful for all their hard work in respect of caring for my mother and making her feel special and welcome over the past months whilst moving into
her new home. It is obvious she feels secure and has settled; making friendships and continuing to be her usual happy self with staff giving her a sense of purpose each day. As a family we know we can contact the care home at any time to arrange a video call and or visit (COVID-19 safe) to see her. This gives us as family confidence knowing that our mother is being looked after well and all is being done to make these unprecedented times go as smooth as possible.

Not recommended for Alzheimer’s. My mother was wrongly advised by a senior member of staff at Alder House that the care would be suitable for my father. He was falling repeatedly, in this home, averaging 3 times per week. Not only this, upon visiting, I found him to be unwashed, wearing dirty clothes,
often with food down his trousers. I had to ask for him to be showered. I complained to the care home manager, as I was obviously extremely worried. The complaint letter was never responded to from my mother. My father was evicted with 7 days notice during the lockdown, this was apparently due to my (quote) “threatening behaviour”. As we were frantically searching for somewhere else, my father was admitted into Hospital over Easter weekend with a suspected hip fracture following another unattended fall at Alder House. He waited 1 week for an MRI, contracted COVID-19. My now late father and our family experienced inhumane treatment by Alder House. We are still haunted by this experience.

Father came into our care for a period of respite, so you had an opportunity to sample our services. Unfortunately, at this assessment stage, your father's previous history of falling was not disclosed. After the period of respite had ended, the family asked for the placement to be made more permanent and to my knowledge, there were no concerns raised at this time. Sadly, your father’s mental health deteriorated very quickly, due to his advanced cognitive impairment, however, your father remained physically very active and quite fit. This was a huge challenge to the care team, as your father had no insight into the risks he presented, as we have a spacious environment. The care team sought advice from a range of professionals (the Community Mental Health Services, Physiotherapy services, the Falls team, Adult Social Care Safeguarding Team, the Care Quality Commission) and it was agreed that to keep your father safe that he would need to be moved to a safer nursing environment.

My mum has been at Alder House since December 2016, initially moving in for respite with my dad, both in their 90s. Mum has a lovely room with en-suite. It is such a relief to know she is being so well cared for during the current crisis. The staff have been amazing and although I haven’t been able
to see Mum in person, we have been FaceTiming (Mum is very deaf and has dementia) where the carers have helped her with the iPad. It’s been reassuring to see photos of Mum on Facebook and to hear about the treats and activities that the residents have still been able to participate in, particularly that in this sunshine they have been able to socially distance in the lovely gardens. Most of all, I am so grateful for the care, kindness and understanding that Mum (and I) always receive from the wonderful staff.

This is a lovely care home and I would recommend anyone to let their loved ones live here. The staff are great and there is a lovely atmosphere for the residents and staff. The staff care about their residents and their good health and well being. Our sister is in good humour and is well, considering
her Alzheimers. Her room is like a hotel bedroom, spacious and very clean.

Such a lovely, friendly caring home. Nothing is too much trouble for any member of staff. They all work together and form a very strong team. You can feel that they all get on as a unit. My friend is very well cared for and very happy. The staff (all) are excellent and very kind, nothing too much trouble. The home itself is clean, well maintained with excellent facilities and food. I am very happy to visit and can even take along my dog, who by the way loves all the attention she gets

A beautiful peaceful home. The staff are wonderful and treat the residents with respect dignity and love. Our mum has only been in for a short while but she has been looked after as though she is family. There are also lots of activities taking place and a beautiful garden for residents to go outside

How to begin is the greatest difficulty!
Alder House excels itself as a real 'care home'.
In my line of work before I retired, I visited a great many care homes over the years, so I recognise a good one when I see it.
The first step into the building, from reception, the staff and the wards, there
is a friendliness, warmth and awareness from everyone.
I once thanked one of the staff for the care and attention and the reply was 'we love them all!'
That is Alder House.

Alder House is by far the best facility of its kind in this area and I’ve visited many. Yes, it’s more expensive than most but you certainly get what you pay for. Best of all I now have peace of mind that my aunt is being well looked after in what could pass as a 5* hotel.

Mum is spending time at Alder House as I needed surgery and was unable to help with her care. Mum has dementia and usually sleeps most of the time BUT over the last two weeks mum has been chatting, engaging in activities and taking pride in her appearance. She is now getting up and dressed in the morning
instead of waiting for carers. She is gaining weight and loving the choice of food. She is making the choices. I have seen such a change and mum is living not existing.


Sadly, mum will be going home in a week but I hope she will be able to spend more time at Alder House for another holiday very soon.


It is great to see so many staff constantly interacting with the residents and not just between 9 and 5. Activities continue all day and weekends too. There is company and stimulation when wanted or peace and quiet when not. Every member of staff I have met has had mum’s (and the other residents) best interests at heart. What more could I ask for?

We have available some beautiful spacious rooms on our Lawrence and Sherbrooke suites.
