My mother was in Birkinshaw Manor for respite care, however her medical condition continued to deteriorate and she remained in the carehome until she passed away, she was in the care home for 4 weeks.
The care home is modern and clean, however, the real value of the premises are the excellent caring
staff who continually go out of their way to support the residents and their families. My mother was extremely grateful for the support she received whilst at the care home and she became friends with many of the care staff at the premises.
The care home allowed us to view the premises with no prior appointment, not all care homes seem to take this approach. We were confident they had nothing to hide and were really open throughout. I can honestly say the staff went the extra mile to look after my mother and they were always helpful and supportive when my family and I attended the premises.

My husband has been here for 5 months now and the care he has had has been wonderful. Nothing is a problem to any of the staff and the managers are always on hand to give advice.

This care home is absolutely dire, not enough care staff on the dementia wing. Personal items go missing and are not returned, eight falls in eight weeks unexplained or not recorded, personal care totally inadequate. No replies from the manager regarding the problems by email phone or letter. Two visits
to hospitals after falls, the second time advised never to be returned to the home as they cannot provide adequate care.

My mother had had a lie in and was having breakfast when I called. The lounge area was warm and homely while a carer was chatting with Mother. The whole place felt welcoming, safe and resident supportive.

My father has been in this care home since the start of the year and has received an amazing level of care with zero complaints. Despite breakdowns in communication with social workers and other professionals working with my father the staff at the home have remained engaging and supportive. While we
were unable to access his funds and personal belongings staff went above and beyond to help ensure that he still had everything he needed. They have built a bond with him and been incredibly understanding through his (and our) times of frustration. It was a huge concern as a family that he may not receive the care he deserved upon entering the adult care system but this facility and its staff have blown us away and erased any concerns we had. We will forever be thankful to all staff involved in my father's care and would highly recommend/rate this facility to others.

Thank you for the exceptional efforts taken to provide my father with person-centred care. The way you have engaged with the multidisciplinary team for my Dad and provided the best possible outcomes for him has given us the confidence that Birkinshaw is working with the resident's best interests.
Well
done to each and every one of you. I know how hard you have worked to turn this around.
You should all be extremely proud.

After a review with the care home management regarding our mother, I am happy to report the changes being implemented are making a difference. During the COVID period where visiting has been almost impossible, I can see the efforts and ideas are showing improvements, and tracking and traceability help
to improve further.
This makes me feel that the choice we made is and was the right one for continued care where the staff do a difficult but excellent job in the day to day care of the residents.

Thank you, the family.

My mum was admitted to Baedling Manor on 16th Dec 2020 after previously having a bad experience in another care home which resulted in hospitalisation. Before being admitted, my mam was visited at home by the Manager, for an assessment (Covid rules observed), where she chatted to my mam and got to know
about her needs. This made such a difference to our previous experience.
On the day of admission, my sister was allowed to go in with her and stay for the day to help her settle in. This made everything so much less traumatic, as my mam and sister met the staff together and familiarised themselves with the surroundings in a very relaxed way. This has made all the difference to my mam and she seems to have settled in wonderfully.
My personal experience has all been via telephone, but on every occasion, the Manager and staff have been friendly, cheery and very helpful. They make me feel like part of their care home community. I would consider this home outstanding.

Our mother has been a resident at Baedling for over two years and despite the current challenges of not being able to go outside of the home, she is happy with the staff who care for her and the attention she receives. The new management team are working hard to improve the processes and staffing levels
and the communication has improved so we now feel confident about finding out what is happening within the home. The food and facilities are very good and the residents are well cared for.

My Dad has been a resident of Baedling Manor for almost two years. He needed full-time care, that I could not provide, was a very difficult thing for me to accept but from the first visit to the home I was very impressed by the members of staff that I met. They seemed to be a real commitment to making
this a home for the residents. The building and facilities are fabulous, hotel-like, with absolutely no unpleasant aromas or old/tired furniture. I have full confidence in the staff to provide the care and compassion that my Dad needs and deserves and I feel involved with the community even during these unprecedented times.

Mam has been a resident since January 18. I am fully aware of the recent CQC report. Things had slipped but the new management are working hard to get back to where the care homes previous rating was.
In the past, I have had to make a complaint, but this was dealt with appropriately and quickly.
It
has been a very difficult few months for all. I have had continued communication with Mam via phone, FaceTime and a few visits, when allowed.
The staff have been supportive of both Mam and I when we have been upset about the current situation and have rung me if she has been upset.
Mam is as settled as she can be. Residents are encouraged to participate in varied activities if they wish. It’s lovely to hear them singing and dancing to the old songs that bring back members.
I’m sure that Baedling Manor will get back it’s good review with all the hard work that is ongoing.
No concerns over my mams overall care and happiness.

As we all know, Covid-19 has presented significant challenges to the care home sector. Baedling Manor has not escaped this challenge. However, the owners have addressed the challenges head-on, staff turnover being a key one. My mum has been there for 18 months; she is well cared for and is happy. Baedling
Manor is now her home where she is safe and content. She has some lovely friends in the care home and truly likes her carers. We have recently spoken to the team from the local authority and are confident that the plan of action discussed will be appropriately implemented. Baedling Manor management and staff will get our 100% support!

I think anyone sending a relative to a care home should ensure they do their research. As part of this, a first stop should be the latest CQC report. I recommend checking the latest CQC report dated 2nd September 2020. Our experience of Baedling recently has been very poor.

Reply from Helen Langley, Manager at Birkinshaw Manor

Thank you for your review. A new management team has been employed as of the 1st September to action all concerns raised from the CQC inspection which took place in July 2020.

My mum spent the last 9 months of her life in Baedling Manor, the care she received was amazing. At 92, after a fall and suffering from dementia, she could no longer manage at home. The thought of her going into a home was very daunting. Baedling Manor is everything you could want in a care home and
more. The staff were all lovely, very professional and caring and always resolved any problems quickly (not that there were many). The home is spotlessly clean, my mum's en-suite room was always immaculate. My daughter was a frequent visitor, she loved going to see her and always felt comfortable going on her own. We did think that my mum may have been a bit depressed and lonely before the move. The difference in her when she moved to Baedling Manor was amazing, her mood lifted and she was so happy.
She died at 93 in her sleep and I am so grateful that in her last few months she was happy, settled, safe and well cared for. Baedling Manor is what every care home should be like. 5 Stars.

What I liked:
Lovely modern facility with very comfortable rooms for the residents and they were allowed to personalise rooms to make it feel more like home.
Good communal areas and activities arranged for the residents.
Carers managed challenging behaviours with some assistance from behaviours team.
Communication
and relationships with carers were very good overall.

What could improve:
There were occasions when my mother was struggling to eat or drink and I felt that on occasions her food was taken away without offering her assistance to eat or drink and this happened more during the last 3 months. I did, however, see other carers helping her eat/drink.
Carers to be more aware of individual care plans as occasionally information was not adhered to or available.
More interaction with residents in the communal areas. Sometimes it appeared that the carers had to complete care plans on phones and were seen chatting among themselves and residents were just sitting in chairs looking bored.

Due to deteriorating health, dad realised he could no longer live on his own. It was his choice to come and live here. I know people say not to look at the bricks and mortar and how it’s the care that counts, but after seeing a selection of care homes this one certainly stands out. Its light airy feel,
generously sized rooms and the range of facilities made it more like a hotel rather than care home.
Of course, a care home is only as good as the staff it employs and I am happy to say that they too have been outstanding. I can’t describe the relief we have had knowing that dad was so well cared for by a team of well trained and deeply caring individuals. Dad did not have dementia so was able to get to know and also care for the staff who became his good friends. They went above and beyond what was expected of them, one in particular who Dad was very fond of.
Thanks for making his last months so comfortable, keep up the good work. You have a care home to be proud of.

My grandmother recently moved to Baedling Manor, initially for some respite, as her dementia was progressing and she was having difficulty managing at home alone. The staff were lovely, patient and kind. The home itself is very nice - spotlessly clean and beautifully decorated. There was no feeling
of it being a stereotypical 'care home'. The Orangery, in particular, is light and airy with big bi-folding doors that open on to decking. There is also an arts and crafts room, a cinema, a library and a small bar with a grand piano. The corridors are covered in of memorabilia from the 1900's. They also have a hairdresser who visits the home and a singer on the last Friday of every month. We felt so happy with Baedling Manor that it changed our opinion on moving my grandmother into a care home. I feel that she is safe, cared for and (most of the time, despite her feisty nature), content. I'd like to thank all the staff at Baedling Manor who care for her and the other residents who live there.

My Mam has been a resident at Baedling Manor for a year. We cannot fault anything about it, the staff throughout are very professional and caring. From walking in the reception, everywhere is spotless and very welcoming. The facilities are what you get in a 5* hotel and having a hairdressers on site
with trained dementia staff is a bonus. We cannot praise it enough and would recommend anybody who has a loved one needing care to come here.

Carol thank you so much for your very kind review. It is a real pleasure to partner with you and your family to support your Mam. She always has a kind word for us and this is reflected in our CQC report. She enjoys huge support from her family, especially from you and you know how much I enjoy your visits (especially when you bring the little one). Your review came as a welcome surprise on waking this morning. Thanks again, it means a lot. Very much appreciated. Darren Managing Director.

Current Review Score: 8.2 (8.180)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.2 (8.180) out of 10 for Birkinshaw Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.9 out of 5 from 2 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 3.3 out of 5 from 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.870 for Birkinshaw Manor is calculated as follows: ( (21 Excellents x 5) + (1 Goods x 4) + (1 Satisfactorys x 3) ) ÷ 23 Ratings = 4.87

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 3.31 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Birkinshaw Manor is based on 2 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 = 3.125

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 54 registered maximum number of service users is 10.8. 2 Positive Reviews ÷ 10.8 = 0.185

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
