My parents (who both have dementia) have been at Escan Manor since Aug/Sept 2024. My father was at another home in Exeter (rated close to 10*, with an "Outstanding" CQC) but they told us they could not deal with him any more - in particular his tendency to shout if he has an urgent need. Several other
care homes refused to take him. Escan Manor, by contrast, has done an excellent job of managing his needs. I also find the staff much friendlier than at the previous home. As for my mother, the home has worked hard to help her settle in, especially in light of her anxiety and confusion. There have been personnel changes, but I regularly see care staff that I've got to know from previous visits. The home is purpose-built, well designed and v.warm (both parents really feel the cold). Can't say it's all been perfect (e.g. admin/communication is v.poor) - but for me, the most important thing is the care, which in my experience has been very good.

My father moved in June 2024, following a 2 year stay in another home, he moved to be closer to his family. It took him a while to settle in with constant changes in staff, especially nurses and then understanding his needs and acknowledging his care plan. There have been a few incidents of not having
his medication which have caused a lot of anxiety. With more changes and the departure of management and senior staff, we are starting to worry that we have made the right decision. We are not feeling confident that his complex needs are being met and for the home whilst promising, they seem to be going through a period of uncertainty.

Nursing staff coming and going. Caring staff coming and going. Rumours of the manager not being particularly nice or able to do his job in a professional manner.
Issues with the food being substandard and not of good quality. Room cleanliness below standard. This is a review based on previous issues
and not a reflection on the recent changes. Thankfully the manager has left along with a former receptionist.
The acting manager is absolutely fantastic and issues that the previous manager couldn't be bothered to address are now in hand with a big improvement.
The acting manager deserves to be promoted to manager!
Hopefully, this improvement will remain and other issues will be addressed. This is sadly quite a negative review but it's an honest one.

My friend came to Escan Care Home in mid-October and has now been there for 6 weeks. I believe there were problems to begin with, as was not invoiced for her care, but this has now been rectified since the manager has left. The assistant manager has been great and has endeavoured to sort out any problem
immediately. She has also been honest and upfront if there is a problem.
My friend is starting to settle and has been offered to attend the different activities, but she has declined as would rather stay in her room.
The food looks good, and the bedrooms and central areas are beautiful with great attention to detail. When the manager has been appointed (I am hoping the assistant manager will be appointed) Escan Manor can only go one way "Up".

Reply from Dawn Leaman, Manager at Escan Manor

Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful and detailed review. We're delighted to hear that your friend is beginning to settle at Escan Care Home and that you've noticed the care and attention we put into our environment, food, and activities. We sincerely apologise for the initial issues with invoicing but are pleased these have now been resolved. Thank you for your encouragement and confidence in Escan Care Home. We're committed to continual improvement, and your feedback is invaluable. If there's anything more we can assist with, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Although this is a very clean and tidy place, I have found that the lady I visit has twice to my knowledge been left for over an half hour after asking to use the toilet and has therefore wet the bed/chair and sat in it uncomfortably for a while which does not help the sores she has. I have also noticed
when breakfast is brought in no one has offered to sit and encourage/feed her. It was just left on the table for her to help herself. If this is happening at lunchtime as well then she has no chance of building her strength back up. I know staff shortages don't help but don't take in more residents until you have the staff to look after them properly.

The team take great pride and ensures that the atmosphere is relaxed, and welcoming and the residents are respected. It does have that hotel feeling which makes the experience a very pleasant one. My parents are delighted by the excellent level of care they receive. They are extremely happy and settled
in well. Communication is good between the team and the residents. I couldn't have wished for a nicer place for them to be in and call it their forever home. My only concern is that the quality of the food has dropped but I know it's getting a bit better.

There is only one word to say about this wonderful place wow. It’s very apprehensive visiting a relative for the first time in a strange environment. However, from the first moment you walk in the whole atmosphere is so beautiful and welcoming. It’s not institutionalised in any way. It’s more like a
five-star hotel. The staff are all dressed as professional carers and treat the residents with total respect. I visited at lunchtime to see my two family members. I was offered lunch and taken to the small dining room which looked so welcoming, even a bottle of wine being opened for residents. It was so reassuring to see my family members so relaxed in a stunning place such as Escan Manor.

A superb modern home. We particularly liked the decor and various smaller social rooms to enjoy with friends and family, the afternoon tea room, reading room, games room and so on. Well-presented and tasty meals with appropriate portion sizes. Lovely, friendly staff genuinely enjoying their job. Definitely
recommend this home.

Current Review Score: 8.4 (8.422)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.4 (8.422) out of 10 for Escan Manor is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.2 out of 5 from 11 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.2 out of 5 from 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.236 for Escan Manor is calculated as follows: ( (68 Excellents x 5) + (27 Goods x 4) + (27 Satisfactorys x 3) + (4 Poors x 2) + (1 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 127 Ratings = 4.236

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.186 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Escan Manor is based on 7 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.7

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 72 registered maximum number of service users is 14.4. 7 Positive Reviews ÷ 14.4 = 0.486

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
