I visted my close friend at Marula Lodge on October 29th 2024. Sadly my friend has Parkinson's complicated by progressive dementia, nevertheless, despite remaining dumb throughout my visit, he remains very well cared for by a delightful group of staff members many of whom are Nepalese. My friend and
I met originally in Nepal in 1985 so the relationship between my friend, the staff and myself was extremely cordial. My friend is being very well cared for despite his very poor prognosis.

I have just spent a couple of hours visiting my mother at Marula Lodge on her birthday. It's not the cake supplied by the chef (thank you) or the lovely fuss to make my mum feel special, but the reason I am reviewing is to recognise the kindness and warmth of the staff towards the residents and their
families. There are some truly kind and wonderful people caring for our mum and we thank you and really appreciate you.

Very well run, staff very compassionate with the patients. My brother seems very happy and settled and was pleased to see us, which he hadn't been for a while. Thanks to the staff, lovely place, clean, welcoming.

My Dad has been at Marula Lodge for over a year now and has moved to Pirbright unit. My mum and the whole family feel the staff look after Dad very well. They are attentive and nothing is too much trouble to ease his pain or make him smile.
Today the staff moved Dad into an armchair very gently even
though they had to use a machine. That is no mean feat as I know he finds it painful. The staff member was wonderful when I asked for a few food items and the whole family had tea to join Dad for lunch. The carer then returned to show us how Dad could now use a pedometer. It was wonderful to see, as Dad’s movement has decreased and this will help to keep his joints moving and muscles working. Well done to the manager for training some fabulous staff to care for our precious Dad.

My dad recently turned 80 and Murula Lodge really went out of their way to make the day so wonderful. When we arrived staff had set up the lounge with cards, balloons and party food. We are very happy with the care our dad receives. Thank you to all the staff at the home.

On my husband's birthday, a member of staff and all the team working that afternoon had helped my husband to enjoy his birthday. The other residents helped too. We sang Happy Birthday while he cut the lovely cake that was made. We all ate jelly as well. All the team members worked well together, treating
each resident with respect and dignity.

The nursing team are extremely attentive and nothing is too much trouble for both the residents and their families, visitors and guests. We live in Canada but visit frequently and the team are more than happy to keep regular contact via phone and video call etc.

One member of the staff and the team made us feel so welcome when I came to see my mum. It's been a distressing time with her being moved far away but we feel so happy that she's here as there is so much care and love for her.
the nurse in charge was very kind and helpful.

My mother passed away on 10 April. Not only did I have to deal with my own grief but also those of the nurses who were with my mother at the time of her passing. I have no complaint about how they cared for her, my issue lies with those in management and above. Whilst we were told for years that we
were all “family", where was the condolence card from the home? When did we receive a phone call offering a caring word or two? After the amount of money paid to the home, surely that’s the least you could do? When the date was set, we went to the home to invite those who wanted to be there to come. We arranged for there to be refreshments after the funeral in the community hall next door so that staff/residents could pop over. Not one representative of the home came to the funeral. My mother worked in care homes for nearly 40 years and someone always attended a funeral on behalf of the home. Shame on you Marula Lodge. Because when it mattered most you were not family, you merely chase £.

Reply from Natasha Gwyther, Special Projects Manager at Marula Lodge

Thank you for this review Geraldine. I've delayed responding as I wanted to look into this with the team at Marula Lodge. I've been informed that the management team spoke to two members of the family following the death of your mother to offer their condolence. A card was passed to the family from the team at the home. All details of your mother's funeral and wake were also passed on to staff who were entitled to attend if they wished. I'm sorry you felt unsupported at a time of need, this certainly was not our intention.

Oh, what a wonderful birthday afternoon! All the staff made it so special, not just for my husband but for all of us, wife, daughter and grandaughter. A lovely cake for all the residents to take part in as well. Singing "Happy Birthday" made it a very special memory for us all. Yesterday, our son and
his wife made the journey up from Salisbury for a short visit and again were made most welcome. Thank you.
We cannot thank you all enough for the day-to-day care you all give my husband every day and night.

My father moved into Marula Lodge four weeks ago, the staff have been kind, caring and understanding to him, making him settle a lot quicker than we all expected. It's reassuring to know he is safe and well cared for. Whenever I visit I receive a warm welcome. Every resident looks clean and well cared
for and my dad's room is also clean and comfortable. Marula offers a friendly environment with activities for the residents to do if they choose. Last week a singer came in to entertain the residents, it was so lovely to walk in and see everybody dancing, singing and smiling.

Since my husband arrived just over 1 month ago. His mental health has improved dramatically. Previously at another home, he was isolated to his room as he can have unpredictable behaviour, here he is encouraged to engage/move about the home.
The genuine care shown by the staff is obvious and communication
with myself is excellent. When I visit, I am made to feel very welcome.

Most people do not know what to expect from care homes and will be intimidated. Found Marula Lodge to understand, not only the needs of residents but also of their families. A very difficult time has been made much more understandable and friendly. Keep up the good work.

The new wallpaper at the home looks fab, really bright so the residents can see where to eat. Which really helps my mum. So a massive well done to all the staff. Also went to see my mum at Easter and the staff put on some lovely food and cake. Well done guys you're doing amazing.

Current Review Score: 9.2 (9.193)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.2 (9.193) out of 10 for Marula Lodge is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.4 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.8 out of 5 from 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.441 for Marula Lodge is calculated as follows: ( (80 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (11 Satisfactorys x 3) + (1 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 118 Ratings = 4.441

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.752 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Marula Lodge is based on 8 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.8

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 42 registered maximum number of service users is 8.4. 8 Positive Reviews ÷ 8.4 = 0.952

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
