My husband needed urgent respite care after a long stay in hospital. The management team at Dormy Care found him a room at Pine Martin Grange, and within a few days he was there, it was amazing! From the first day, my husband completely felt at home. The facilities are like being in a five-star hotel,
the food is excellent. My husband has a rare neurological condition and within a couple of days, all the staff had been trained to understand his needs. We were very impressed with the knowledge of the nursing staff. All the staff are just lovely, caring and supportive. He really enjoyed the physio sessions that he had twice a week in the gym. He even had a trip to the beach for ice cream. Thank you all at Pine Martin Grange.

I am so relieved that my mum has found Pine Martin Grange as her new home. The staff have been amazing, settling her in and ensuring that she is comfortable. Her room is very clean and bright with a lovely view out onto a beautiful patio/garden. The food is excellent. Activities are organised both morning
and afternoon by amazing staff. The manager is approvable and efficient. All carers/nurses/catering/activity staff are brilliant. Thoroughly recommend!

This care home is very well appointed and comfortable but expensive if you do not need nursing as in my care after an operation to recover. The staff are very helpful and good, looking after people with all sorts of ailments.

My Aunt was at Pine Marten for what turned out to be a brief stay. On the day that she was admitted, I came away wishing that we had made the arrangements sooner. That impression only increased over the time that she was there. I live 160 miles from the home and they phoned me at home to update me on
her progress. When I came back a week later I ended up staying for over 24 hours and I was made to feel so welcome and cared for and I was only a visitor! I really do wish that my aunt had been better able to experience/be aware of the care at Pine Marten for a lot longer. I sat in my aunt's room for a lot of that 24 hours and the frequency of visits by care assistants and nurses and, almost as importantly, their attitude, was excellent. If I had other relatives locally in need of care then I would put Pine Marten top of a list of ones that I would look at to recommend/arrange.

There is no doubt that this home has all the bells and whistles of a newly appointed care home. However, the needs for dementia patients were sadly lacking. My father was in the home for approximately six months. As a family we were repeatedly going in and having to clear up after my Dad's mishaps;
from literally wiping excrement walked across the carpet, to regularly cleaning his bathroom, to getting him in a shower. He got a nasty eye infection from repeatedly rubbing his eye with dirty fingernails.
Admittedly my father was not the easiest of patients. As a result, he was drugged up to the eyeballs to keep him quiet. Since moving him to a different home we have been able to take him off this medication and he is much happier and calmer. In conclusion, I would say that choose carefully if your loved one is in need of a lot of care. This home will leave too many of their patients unattended for too long. I'm assuming much of it is due to too high a patient ratio to staff numbers.

Reply from Helen Lacey, Home Director at Pine Martin Grange Care Home

I am so sorry to hear that you were dissatisfied with the service we provided to your father during his stay with us. During the initial time following his admission, we were more than able to meet his needs and he was happy and settled. As time progressed, we did our very best to support his escalating behaviours but it became very clear after an incident that this was not going to be possible in the longer term. We communicated our concerns and actions to your mother who was a frequent visitor and aware of the issues we were dealing with, including his refusal to accept personal care/continence management. We also involved the Community Mental Health team and his own GP at all stages and they advised us on medication and support. Our staffing levels are determined according to the assessed needs of those living in the home and never fall below this. Your father received one to one care for a considerable period of time until a suitable specialist home could be found.

Very pleased. Mum is safe, clean, fed, warm and treated with dignity.
Management/staff are very approachable and professional. Record keeping is excellent. Residents are known.
Find it a little disconcerting that residents can enter each other's rooms when doors are closed.
Overall very pleased

My dad has been a resident at Pine Martin for about 18 months. We decided to move him there after trying live-in carers and respite homes where he lived which did not compare with Pine Martin Grange. Dad is type 1 diabetic and not the easiest of characters to manage but we are very happy with the home
and the care it provides. He has a lovely room, can take part in planned activities as he wishes and enjoys very good food. In particular, the care and nursing he receives and the positive, approachable attitude of all the staff is of a very high standard, very reassuring and appreciated.
The team have managed the challenges of Covid very well and now the worst is hopefully past, it will be good for the residents such as Dad to be taken out and about, for a change of scene.
Thanks to everyone there for providing such a good quality of life for a 93-year-old!

The management and staff at Pine Martin Grange made great efforts to help my mother settle in when she moved in as a permanent resident after the painful decision to leave her home of 35 years. The food, surroundings and facilities are exemplary. It was a difficult journey for Mum as she's suffered
issues with her health and well being but the support and care from the Pine Martin team has been tremendous.

My aunt seems happy with the care she is receiving. When I’m there the staff are very caring and treat her with respect as an individual. However, I do feel that the floor my aunt is on is understaffed. There have been two occasions when her hearing aids weren’t in. It makes such a difference if she
can hear better. Also her dental plate with several teeth on it was lost. She would never remove it herself in the day which leads me to believe it wasn’t put away properly at night.

Current Review Score: 8.6 (8.635)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 8.6 (8.635) out of 10 for Pine Martin Grange Care Home is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.6 out of 5 from 7 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.1 out of 5 from 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.566 for Pine Martin Grange Care Home is calculated as follows: ( (66 Excellents x 5) + (8 Goods x 4) + (3 Satisfactorys x 3) + (2 Poors x 2) + (4 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 83 Ratings = 4.566

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.069 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Pine Martin Grange Care Home is based on 6 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 = 3.6

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 64 registered maximum number of service users is 12.8. 6 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.8 = 0.469

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.

I have worked in healthcare for the last 10 years, initially starting at a GP practice as a part-time receptionist when my children were very small. Prior to this, I had a career in events management and sales. The practice trained me in HCA work and phlebotomy, and I progressed to holding blood clinics and assisting with minor operations. When I decided to return to work full time as my children got older, I gravitated toward residential care – I had hugely enjoyed working with my elderly patients in my phlebotomy clinic and wanted to continue in a role where I had this contact. I worked for a provider initially as a Home Services Advisor, progressing to a regional role. I then made the transition into Care Home Management 4 years ago and haven’t looked back. I have managed both nursing and residential homes in Dorset, most recently commissioning a brand new service. I am delighted to join the Dormy Care team and be part of a team that puts the daily experience and ongoing quality of life of our ladies and gentlemen at the heart of all it does. I have a BSc (Hons) in Management and an NVQ Level 5 in Operations Management. Outside of work I am a Mum of 2 boys, a keen swimmer and a yoga practitioner.
