Rakewood House Care Home in Castleton near Rochdale, provides residential, nursing, residential dementia and nursing dementia care.

Residents are invited to decorate their rooms with small items of their own furniture.

Staff encourage residents to complete a daily task, even if it is as simple as choosing what they would like to wear for the day.

The home runs a weekly programme of events, which includes talks and demonstrations from local people who can share their knowledge and entertainers regularly visit the care home to delight residents with songs, sketches, singing and dancing.

The care home has a large wheelchair-friendly landscaped garden for residents to relax in.

Staff were very attentive my mum was cared for with dignity and respect. We were kept well informed, day staff rang to say we needed to go back in and was very caring and knowledgeable professional. Night staff was on shift when my mum passed they explained pain relief was available if needed beforehand.
They were very empathetic and also allowed us to spend our time to be able to have time with my mum but also being aware that if needed they were there for both my mum and the family. We again were kept well informed of what would happen next. Kitchen staff were very good when asking for her own food to be liquidated nothing was too much trouble.

After nine years in the home, Mum passed in June. During those nine years, there had been several changes of ownership/management along with rapid turnovers of care staff and I saw several changes in the way Mum was cared for, including the loss of continuity for Mum (she had Dementia) as far as carers
getting to know her and more importantly, Mum getting to recognise and know her carers.
However, in the last few years, the latest management change afforded Mum that continuity. The staff were happier and I can honestly say that Mum was loved and cherished during her last few years. Even through the pandemic years when I was unable to be with her as I would have liked, I knew that she was cared for as well as I could expect.
Whilst being cared for in a care home is never going to be a perfect situation, I am happy with how Mum and also her family, were always treated with respect, understanding and love. Her last few days and weeks were made more bearable for us because of this level of care.
