After 3 years in the care floor the only word I can use to describe the care received is poor! There are some excellent carers, although they appear to be given very little support and guidance! We have had lots of lost property - new clothing brought in and lost! New clothes ripped then stuffed in
the back of drawers. Communication is a very big problem, emails ignored, concerns from family not addressed! Or when chasing up issues we then discover yet another member of staff has left - over the 3 years there has been several changes of head of care leading to lack of continuity. RVW - rather than using a 'use it or lose it' approach, are much happier using 'let's ensure they lose it as quickly as possible' such as using a hoist rather than encouraging residents to walk. My family member was told to use his pad when asked to go to the toilet! There is a certain lack of independence and lack of dignity. Richmond Villages and BUPA all seem to be happy with this lack of care!

The grounds, buildings, and facilities here are beautiful, but more importantly, the quality of care my poor old mother is receiving is fabulous. She has very advanced dementia and needs a high level of support 24/7. It is a great comfort to us to know that she is getting this and we are beyond grateful
to the gentle and patient care staff that work so hard looking after her.

Mum was the 4th resident to arrive at Richmond Witney. She moved into an independent living flat and immediately settled, making new friends and becoming an ambassador to champion the BUPA care pathway the villages represent. In the last 9 years, she has followed that pathway after 8 years of independent
living to a year in assisted living and now on to the care floor. I have experienced nothing but kindness and compassion for her since her mental health began to decline. All departments have really cared about her, the girls in hospitality missed her when she could not make it down for meals, the housekeeping team were caring and kind to her, especially two in particular and the dom care team were wonderful at popping in to check on her if they were passing, spending time with her and collecting her meals for her, with special thanks to three girls in particular not to mention the lovely girls on reception and the senior team. You have all helped in her journey, thank you.

My parents moved to Richmond Villages in December 2021 and since then have experienced independent, assisted living, and nursing care.
The consistent wonderment is the care exhibited by members of staff and their willingness to go the extra mile to support residents and enable them to have as fulfilling
lives as possible. The team recently laid on a 'Wedding Breakfast', including decorating the table, making a cake and facilitating a live link, so that my Mum was able to celebrate, with her friends, the wedding of her eldest granddaughter which she couldn't attend in person.
I've come to the conclusion that the only thing that truly matters for the wellbeing of our loved ones is the 'well-spring of care' for others exhibited by staff. The senior management team of Bupa, the Richmond Villages group, and care homes everywhere, should recognise that this alone is their single greatest asset and do their utmost to nurture and sustain those staff who embody it. My respect to you all.

Reply from Martin Crick, Village Manager at Richmond Villages Witney

Thank you for taking the time to recognise the team here at Witney for going that extra mile. I certainly feel that I have a talented and caring team and greatly appreciate your comments, which I will share with them. It was great to see Mum's enjoyment of her granddaughter's wedding on the live link and to celebrate at a distance.

I recently spent 16 days in the Willow section of Richmond Villages Witney enjoying a period of respite care following a couple of falls at home. The staff made me feel very welcome and were unfailingly kind and polite. The catering was excellent and I was even able to treat myself to the resident hairdresser,
nail technician and physiotherapist. Obviously, I looked forward to returning to my own home. But my family commented on the fact that I left Richmond Villages looking fitter and more relaxed. All in all, this was a very positive experience.

Reply from Martin Crick, Village Manager at Richmond Villages Witney

Thank you for taking the time to write a review when you stayed with us for respite care recently. It is great to know you returned home more relaxed and fitter from a positive experience. So glad you enjoyed the food, the team plus the hairdressers and nail bar.

My father suffered a fall and subsequent ill health and as a result, required additional care at Richmond Village. He was unable to return to independent living and had respite care on the Willow Ward. The team on Willow were amazing, so kind and helpful. They played a big part in getting him back to
independent living. I cannot praise them enough.

Reply from Martin Crick, Village Manager at Richmond Villages Witney

I loved living independently within Richmond Villages Witney whilst my wife was still with me. I tried the assisted living but it did not meet all my needs. I moved to the care floor to have nursing support. I have a lovely room and am very happy - it has been redecorated and furnished with the help
of the staff and it now feels very lovely. I still have an element of my independence which I make use of to keep in touch with my friends and life around the village. The care staff are very cooperative and friendly and the nursing team take great care of me. I am very happy living here with the support of a great team.

Reply from Martin Crick, Village Manager at Richmond Villages Witney

Dad has thrived being on the care floor for the last 10 months having moved from his independent living apartment. His health and mental well-being is much improved and he enjoys making the most of the facilities available at Richmond. He partakes in the varied activities including exercise classes,
bridge and social events whether on the care floor or downstairs with the independent/assisted living community. The staff (care, hospitality, domiciliary and activities) are excellent and very friendly, caring yet respectful. Dad has a lovely room overlooking the grounds and is enjoying his days here. For us as a family, it gives us peace of mind that he is well cared for and happy.

Reply from Carla Timms, Senior Village Adviser at Richmond Villages Witney

Very pleased to see a significant improvement over the last few months. More staff and better management, the staff now have time to care for their residents as well as looking after the basics. I and Mum are much happier all-round now, well done to the new regime.

My husband spent a week in Richmond Village Witney and was very well looked after. He enjoyed meeting new people and the company. The activities provided were most enjoyable and stimulating. He will be happy to stay again when I have some much needed respite.

My father has spent two years at Witney on the dementia ward. I found the carers to be kind and friendly towards him, always very respectful and after a shaky start (there was a high turnover of staff) my dad settled in very well. Communication by the carers is excellent, regularly phoning or emailing
regarding his health especially when Covid19 prevented visiting. My father is now being moved to be in my mother's care home and the staff seem very sad to see him go.

Reply from Alison Horridge, Customer Advisor on behalf of the team at Richmond Villages Witney

Thank you for your lovely review. We are sad to see your Father leave our care at Witney but are equally happy knowing he will get to spend time with his wife. Thank you again for choosing Richmond Villages to care for him for the last two years.

My husband moved into the nursing care unit in May. He moved later into dementia care for more activities. He tells me that all the staff are kind and helpful and I have found that too. His room and all the public areas are attractive and spacious. The laundry service though is not good. Several of
his things have been lost and sometimes when I visit he is not wearing his own clothes, although they are named.

Without exception the members of the staff/management I have met have all provided excellent service in what is very challenging work. All have been very attentive, helpful, cheerful and uncomplaining. It is a pity that you have to rely on so many agency workers who, while they are good people and competent
workers, some lack the experience and knowledge of the permanent staff. My only marks below excellent were for room and food and drink. Neither are meant to be serious criticisms. For the room, the bathroom floor was not laid properly and floods as a result. A carer provided a simple practical mitigating solution; put your feet in the bowl while showering and the bowl collects most of the water. Also, due to my height, I found it difficult to locate a chair high enough for comfort. With regard to the food and drink, the food is perfectly acceptable if the choice a little limited. But to expect Cordon Bleu would be unrealistic and ungrateful. Should I not survive my dotage unscathed, I will happily return.

My sister was in the nursing home and received end of life care.
The nursing and care staff provided compassionate and professional care to her and the rest of the family who were able to spend time with her.
There was humour but also a very knowledgeable and professional level to her care, but the
rest of the nursing home team including hostesses and housekeeping were very friendly.
The room overlooked a wonderful view of the grounds and pond.

The staff at Richmond, Willow nursing floor have gone well above and beyond to care for my mother. They are so kind and understanding of her needs, her increasing frailty and sometimes confusion. They put themselves out to listen and care and I have been most impressed and encouraged. Thank you all

Current Review Score: 9.1 (9.131)

Overview of Review Score

The Review Score of 9.1 (9.131) out of 10 for Richmond Villages Witney is based on a) the Average Rating and b) the number of positive Reviews.

  • a) The Average Rating is 4.5 out of 5 from 10 Reviews in the last 24 months.

  • b) The score for the number of positive Reviews is 4.6 out of 5 from 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months.

Detailed Breakdown of Review Score

The maximum Review Score for a Care Home is 10, which is made up from the Average Rating of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) and the Number of Reviews (maximum of 5 points) in the last 24 months:

  • a) 5 Points are available for the Average Rating from all Reviews in the last 24 months.

    The Average Rating of 4.517 for Richmond Villages Witney is calculated as follows: ( (87 Excellents x 5) + (21 Goods x 4) + (4 Satisfactorys x 3) + (3 Poors x 2) + (5 Very Poors x 1) ) ÷ 120 Ratings = 4.517

  • b) 5 Points are available for the number of Positive Reviews in the last 24 months. A Positive Review is defined as any Review with an 'Overall Experience' of '4' or '5' (out of a max rating '5').

The 4.614 Points relating to the number of positive Reviews for Richmond Villages Witney is based on 9 positive Reviews in the last 24 months and is calculated as per below:

The 5 points available are broken down as follows:

    • i) 4 points are available for the first 10 Positive Reviews in the last 24 months; 3 points for the first Positive Review, and then 0.125 Points for each of the next four Positive Reviews and then 0.1 Points for the next five Positive Reviews. (1st = 3.000, 2nd = 0.125, 3rd = 0.125, 4th = 0.125, 5th = 0.125, 6th = 0.100, 7th = 0.100, 8th = 0.100, 9th = 0.100, 10th = 0.100) 3 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.125 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 + 0.1 = 3.9

    • ii) 1 point is available for the number of Positive Reviews reaching 20% of the registered maximum number of service users in the last 24 months. If this number is partially reached, then that proportion of 1 point is given. eg a Care Home registered for a maximum of 50 service users has to reach 10 Positive Reviews to receive 1 point, if it has 7 reviews it will receive 0.7 points. 20% of the 63 registered maximum number of service users is 12.6. 9 Positive Reviews ÷ 12.6 = 0.714

  • When a Review is submitted by someone who has previously submitted a Review, only the latest Review will count towards the Review Score.

  • If a Care Home does not have a review in the last 24 months, then it will not have a Review Score.
