  • Friends of the Elderly Woking Day Care, Woking
Friends of the Elderly Woking Day Care has a wide range of daily activities on offer to suit people's likes and preferences.

It also helps support people with dementia and with this in mind recently installed the Tovertafel (‘Magic Table’ in Dutch), an innovation from the Netherlands, which contains a series of games for people living with mid to late-stage dementia.

The Table has been designed to encourage participation and engagement and stimulate people both physically and socially. It can be played independently or in groups

People who attend the centre are encouraged to maintain an active social life. They are given a two-course hot meal every day.

The Bradbury Centre is amazing, all the staff are so enthusiastic, professional and totally on top of their game when it comes to caring for a very vulnerable group of much-loved relatives. The group activities encourage engagement/interaction but nothing is pushed, the meals are amazing and it's a
very bright homely environment, with great facilities. It's a great place for mum to be a mum and have her independence in a safe environment away from the constraints of her normal routine. As mum would put it simply brilliant!

My husband (86 years old) really enjoys coming to the Bradbury Centre. He meets interesting people and enjoys the various activities. It gives me time for myself. He also says the food is very good, especially the cakes. The Summer Party was great. Brilliant singer.

The day centre in itself was very good but the management is somewhat lacking.
I was given a direct debit form which I duly filled in and returned to the manager of the centre. Over time my wife found that the centre was not to her liking. It was at this time I was told that we would have to pay 4
weeks of £64.30 as a retainer fee. I was sent invoices, which I assumed had been paid by direct debit which I filled in and gave to the manager. I subsequently received a bill for £900.20 which I queried with my bank and they told me that no direct debit had been received and the invoices had not been paid. I immediately phoned the care home and told them of the result of my findings. I paid the £900.20 by cheque. I was told that this was the total bill. Subsequently received a further invoice for £64.30. In my opinion, the management of the centre is extremely poor and be aware that you will be liable for extortionate fees if you are not made aware of the costs of leaving the centre.

Thank you for your comments and review of Woking Day Care.
At Friends of the Elderly, we pride ourselves on providing the best possible service so we are sorry that you have been disappointed.
All our contracts do specify a notice period of one month, contracts are signed before clients join us at the centre.
There is not a fee to leave Woking Day Care, only a one-month notice period. I apologise that the direct debit form was not processed, this is a one-off incident and we have put additional processes in place to check it does not happen again.
I appreciate that receiving an additional bill for £64.30 after paying the main bill for your wife’s care would have been frustrating for you, and I am pleased that our Finance Director has waived this cost.
Should you wish to discuss this further please do not hesitate to contact me at Comms@Fote.org.uk, thank you.
Shirley Bradley, Head of Day Care Services.

The team at Friends of the Elderly Day Care have been wonderful. My mum really enjoyed the activities, particularly the crafts. She also ate very well at the centre. I have found the interactions and support from the Friends of the Elderly team to be brilliant. From initial enquiry to hiccups with my
mum going AWOL and missing her transport, they have been caring, supportive and calm in a (mini) crisis. They always tell me that they are here to support me and my mum. It has been a great source of comfort, as we navigate dementia, that my mum got the best of care each day she visited, while she was able to live on her own.
(Due to Covid safety measures, I was unable to enter the facilities.) The Bustler Community bus does offer transport here within the borough, which was super as I work full time.

My review is necessarily limited due to the pandemic, I have had no access to the interior of the centre. My positive moments on stands, support and dignity are based on my interaction with staff outside the centre. All the staff I have met with or spoken to on the telephone have been facilitating,
helpful and caring. My wife seems to enjoy attending the centre, enjoys the food and engages with activities as much as she can. Safety/security is good during the pandemic.

Thank you for leaving Day Care Woking such a positive review. It is a shame that we have not been able to open our doors to families since the pandemic but we can't wait to welcome you all in for a social event when restrictions allow.
