‘Born leader’ nurse reveals how she became a care home manager

A nurse, described as a ‘born leader’, who spent her spare time swotting up on health care management, reveals here how she was promoted to the top job of care home manager.

Former healthcare assistant, Georgie Melo began working as a healthcare assistant at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Her passion for study soon led to her completing a first class honours degree in Adult Nursing.

Georgie spent time working on an acute respiratory ward for two years and at a nursing home for three years.

In 2021, she joined Byron House Care House as clinical lead.

‘I knew from day one’

Georgie Melo said she “knew from day one I had made the best decision. 

“The team were warm and welcoming and their passion to deliver exceptional care was evident.”

Described as having problem-solving abilities, compassion, excellent communication skills and a knack for team collaboration, Georgie pursued extra certifications.

Georgie attended workshops on healthcare management and sought mentorship from senior team members. 

The career-focused nurse says Westgate Healthcare, which operates the care home, “provide training and empower staff to excel their potential, this is evident by staff retention and in house promotions.”

She became care home manager’s ‘right-hand woman’ 

Georgie’s interest in taking on more responsibilities led her to providing supervisory support to her colleagues.

She became the “right-hand woman” to the home manager.

“Her proven track record positioned her as a strong candidate when the opportunity to become home manager arose”. 

Georgie’s journey is ‘an inspiration to others’ 

As care home manager at Byron House, Georgie oversees the operation of the care home, ensuring compliance with regulations, managing staff and maintaining high levels of care.
