If you’ve worked as a Carer in a care home for a few years, you may be thinking about your next career steps. Experience of working as a Carer can provide opportunities for many different career moves, both in and out of the Care sector.


The skills you will have used as a Carer – caring, compassion, empathy and organisational skills will stand you in good stead for your future.

Options for furthering your career

If you enjoy the medical side of being a Carer there are many options for furthering your career such as:

Senior Carer

This is an obvious next step after being a Carer. A Senior Carer takes on more responsibilities such as leading a team and looking after the rota. You’ll usually need a Level 3 in Health and Social Care.

Nurse

Further training and qualifications would be needed to become a Nurse, and there’s four fields that you can train in – Adult Nursing, Children’s Nursing, Learning Disability Nursing and Mental Health Nursing.

Manager

To become a Manager of a Care Home, you’ll need your Level 5 in Health and Social Care Management where you’ll learn about assessment of needs, planning and reviewing care programmes and effective governance.

Allied Heath Professions

There are 14 recognised Allied Health Professions which range from Occupational Therapist to Podiatrist. All will require further study and qualifications but can be a great to progress your career.

Social worker

You’ll need a degree or postgraduate programme to become a Social Worker and you can specialise in working with older people.

Administrative roles

There are may different administrative roles that you can do within a care setting ranging from Finance admin to HR admin. You may not need extra qualifications to work in an administrative role and it can really give you an insight into the day-to-day running of a care home.
