To assist the Staff Nurse on shift take responsibility for the shift and ensure that the residents receive a high standard of care and comfort within the Home. To aim at creating a supportive, homely atmosphere where residents can achieve maximum independence. Show the necessary skills at leading other junior staff members throughout the day-to-day running of the home in a professional manner.
KEY TASKS
When on Duty as a Senior Care Assistant
1. With the direction and support of the Senior Management Team, Duty Staff Nurses and ancillary staff, to maintain and update Care Plans and other Forms/Reports as and when required.
2. Under the direction and with the support of the Duty Staff Nurses and Manager, to attend to the social needs of the residents. These will include:
· Instructing junior staff with daily tasks and following up to ensure they have been completed
· Talking and interacting with residents & families
· Helping residents maintain contacts with family and friends
· Assisting residents with recreation
· Ensure the smooth running of the shift.
3. Under the direction and with the support of the Duty Staff Nurses and Manager, to attend to the physical needs of the residents, at a level determined by each individual’s physical and mental abilities, and work within the requirements of the care principles discussed and acknowledged at induction. These will include:
· Dressing
· Washing
· Feeding
· Bathing
·Toileting
· Exercising
· Promoting continence
· Assisting into/out of bed
· Sluicing soiled linen/clothing
· Assisting tidying rooms
· Serving meals and drinks
4. Under the direction and with the support of the Duty Staff Nurses and Manager; carry out other duties which may include:
· Answer Call Alarms
· Report defects and accidents
· Adhere to Health and Safety Policy
· Attend staff meetings
· Attend training lectures/forums when required including all mandatory training.
· Attend to telephone calls and deal with visitors who attend the home in a polite and courteous manner.
CRITICAL FACTORS
· Relationships and communication with residents must be maintained to a very high standard.
· To exercise confidentiality at all times (see Staff Handbook for Confidentiality Policy).
· To be aware of the individual Care Plan for each resident and to provide help and assistance consistent with the objectives of that Care Plan.
· The ability to recognise and communicate any alteration in the residents’ well-being to the Senior staff member in charge on shift..
· To demonstrate commitment and team working and respect for other team members.
