Job description for Registered Nurse

Reports to: Registered Manager/Director

Principal Responsibilities: To be responsible to the Registered Manager for the satisfactory care of all service users in your care. To assist in the maintenance of the essential standards of quality and safety set out in the Health and Social Care Act 2008 (Regulated Activities) Regulations 2010 and the Care Quality Commission (Registration) Regulations 2009.

To be responsible for following procedures in the Home according to official guidelines, at all times serving the best interests of the service users. The Registered Nurse is responsible for assisting the Registered Manager to implement the care policies of the company to ensure that they are effectively and cost efficiently conducted.

  • Directors, administrative staff and Management team

Main Duties and Responsibilities
1.0 Clinical Responsibilities / Service User Care

  • Carry out planned care and support for service users
  • Assist, advise and supervise unregistered staff in the delivery of care and support

1.3 Ensure the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based, individualised holistic care and support for service users

1.4 Assist and contribute to care support reviews with service users and their families

1.5 Ensure routines of daily living are flexible and carried out to suit service users and their families

1.6 Maintain accurate clinical observations of the service users and act accordingly

1.7 Undertake nursing procedures

1.8 Have responsibility for the correct ordering, administration, storage and disposal of medicines according to St George’s procedures

1.9 Where possible assist service users to take responsibility for their own medication if they wish, within a risk management framework

1.10 Act as the service user’s advocate, especially where there is lack of mental capacity, following procedures for Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Deprivation of Liberty 2007

1.11 Promote service user independence

1.12 Ensure the health safety and welfare of service users and safeguard them from abuse through deliberate intent, negligence or ignorance according to written policies

1.13 Maintain strict confidentiality in relation to information arising during the course of work

2.0 Managerial Responsibilities

  • Manage the staff on shift, co-ordinating and giving care support as well as attending to more administrative duties
  • Ensure staff are familiar with and adhere to care plans as agreed with the service user
  • Organise ones own work load ensuring most effective use of time
  • Assist in the orientation and induction of new staff and any student nurses
  • Ensure that nursing and care practices comply with St George’s policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively at all times at all levels and maintain a harmonious working environment
  • Promote effective liaison between all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Assist with appraisal and supervision of care staff
  • Be responsible for the accurate documentation and care of service user records
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment
  • Assist in ensuring the availability of resources for service user care and support
  • Ensure equipment is in good working order, and report appropriately when defective
  • Participate in Quality Assurance Audit and suggest any changes to improve standards
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the economical use of resources and contribute to the overall control of the budget
  • Promote equality and diversity in all areas addressing any issues that may arise and reporting to the Registered Manager where necessary

3.0 Professional Responsibilities

  • To keep up to date with current developments in nursing and ensure evidence based practice
  • Develop new skills and knowledge pertaining to the speciality as advised by the Registered Manager or Training Director, participate in training opportunities
  • Take responsibility for self-development through the appraisal system and work towards completing agreed personal development plan
  • Conduct oneself in accordance with the NMC Code and St George’s policies
  • To be aware of and take appropriate action in regard to cardiac arrest, fire and major incident
  • Be aware of and adhere to St George’s policies and procedures
  • To undertake responsibility for tasks delegated by the Registered Manager
  • To take charge of the Home when in charge of the shift
  • To act as a role model and be professional in appearance and manner

Infection Prevention and Control

As an employee at St Georges you have a responsibility to comply with our procedures for Health and Safety and to protect the residents in our Home from health care associated infection (HCAI). This includes consistent compliance with the Home’s hand hygiene policy, use of personal protective clothing and safe disposal of waste including sharps. For direct care staff, the ‘naked below the elbow’ approach must always be applied when giving care.

Your knowledge, skills and behaviour in the work place should reflect this and at your annual appraisal your performance will be reviewed and questions asked about the practical application of infection control measures.

St Georges has in place a Safeguarding Policy, including Whistle blowing. It is your duty to protect the health safety and welfare of the residents, and if you have any concerns you must contact your line manager, or alternatively a Home Director.
