Job Summary: 

 

To work closely with the Registered Manager and Clinical Nursing Manager to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the Nursing Home. 

To be accountable for service delivery within the designated unit and team that is managed. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment of care needs and the development, implementation and evaluation of care and the setting and monitoring of standards. 

 

Leadership and management: 

1. To manage the day-to-day provision of nursing care within the designated unit. 

2. To communicate to all staff, the Nursing Homes policies and procedures and to inform all staff of any changes to them. 

3. To participate in the recruitment and selection of clinical staff in partnership with the Registered Manager and Clinical Nursing Manager. 

4. To monitor and appraise the performance of staff within your sphere of responsibility, in accordance with the Nursing Homes policy. 

5. To have insight of budgetary implications. 

6. To act as the designated nurse in charge of the Nursing Home in the absence of the Registered Manger and Clinical Nursing Manager. 

7. Maintaining a safe environment for residents and staff. If an incident occurs, ensuring appropriate action is taken. 

8. To liaise and communicate effectively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team, with the aim of providing a high standard of nursing care to residents. 

9. To actively participate in regular staff meetings with all grades of staff. 

 

10.To assist in the investigation of clinical risks and complaints, 

11. To be aware of and at all times adhere to C.O.S.H.H regulations regarding the use and storage of all chemical agents. 

12. To be aware of the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974) 

13. To be aware of Fire regulations and major incident policies, and what action needs to be taken during and emergency. 

14. To participate in the Clinical Supervision programme as set out in the Nursing Home' 

15. To support all staff in the home, adhere to their job descriptions and work effectively with peers on other shifts. 

16. Where you need support to complete work on your shift, this must be communicated and all work expected should be completed before you leave your shift. 

17. Support the management in filling shifts and pick up shifts where possible and required. 

 

Clinical responsibility: 

 

1. To practice as a professional nurse, acting with confidence, authority and expertise. 

2. To be accountable for the assessment of care needs; the development, delivery and evaluation of nursing care for residents. 

3. Writing and evaluating care plans for residents. 

4. To act as the resident’s advocate, ensuring a safe and caring environment – both physical and psychological. 

5. To evaluate current clinical practice and, through audit, lead a changing setting, maintaining and monitoring standards relating to clinical care delivery. 

6. To maintain accurate and legible records of care. 

7. Act as an expert in resident moving and handling techniques. To take the lead on implementing the Nursing Home’s moving and handling policy to unit level. 

8. Follow the code of professional conduct as laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and ensure that all staff follow the code. 

 

9. To lead a team approach to resident care with emphasis on clinical development. Diarise appointments and arrange escorts one week before appointment. 

10. To take a lead role in implementing evidenced based practice. 

11. Administer medication to Residents as set out in the Medicines Management policy. 

12. Assist team members in delivering a high standard of nursing care. 

13. To carry out nursing procedures as per policy. 

14. To carry out audits: Medicine, Pressure Ulcer, Mattress. 

15. Checking stock and ordering medicine. 

16. Tidying up clinical room. 

 

Financial responsibility: 

 

1. Ensure the safe handling of any valuables brought into the Nursing Home by residents and their relatives. 

2. Report stock needs and order stores/equipment in the absence of the Clinical Nursing Manager and Registered Manager with regard for economy and available budget. 

3. Participate in managing delegated budget: 

4.Responsible for the safe use, maintenance, storage and cleaning of equipment 

5.Budget control of staff within establishment (covering vacant shifts/sickness/absence etc.) 


 

Service development and improvement: 

 

1. To assist in the development of evidenced based policies and guidelines, in collaboration with the Registered General Manager and Clinical Nursing Manager, where appropriate and within an agreed time frame. 

2. To support the core management team in the implementation of National Care Standards (2000) - Commission for Social Care Inspection and National Service Frameworks. 

3. To support in the implementation of audit findings. 

 

4. To contribute to evaluating change in practice and service 

    delivery as a result of research. 


 

Knowledge, training and education: 

 

1. To participate in creating an environment conductive to learning for all staff within the Nursing Home. 

2. To actively pursue the role of mentor/preceptor for nursing staff and Health Care Assistants. 

3. To demonstrate research-based care and be aware of current trends in clinical care and development in the nursing profession. 

4. To maintain own personal and professional growth by defining own educational and development needs, setting down objectives and attending relevant courses/study days. 

5. To identify the training needs of staff and liaise with the Clinical Facilitator to develop strategies appropriate to the learning need.
