Planning permission has been granted for a £13m extra care scheme by South Staffordshire Council. Silverdene will consist of 82 purpose-built apartments that will support a more independent lifestyle for adults over 55 with care needs.
Construction work, which will begin with the demolition of disused buildings, will proceed in June, with developers Housing Plus aiming to complete work at the site by November 2013.
The scheme has been made possible by a £1.1m investment by South Staffordshire Council who, recognising the need for new housing and care alternatives for a rapidly ageing population, also donated the land, while the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) also invested £1.4m.
Ursula Bennion, director of business development for Housing Plus, said: “Silverdene will be a flagship development for the district, which is leading the way in providing extra care accommodation and related support services.
“The scheme will provide much-needed high-quality housing and support for local people. Almost a quarter of residents in the village of Penkridge are aged between 50 and 64 and Silverdene is designed to meet the housing needs of not just these people but for others who need care and support, for many years to come.”
Care Plus will manage the site, themselves a part of Housing Plus, who will provide expert care tailored towards the needs of residents. A community environment will also support a quality lifestyle, with a gymnasium, café, restaurant and hairdressing salon amongst the development plans.
carehome.co.uk currently lists 1,550 extra care accommodations within the UK, as opposed to 20,562 care homes.
