Two residents from Pendine Park Care Organisation Ltd in Wrexham have taken to the stage and put on a performance of Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood.
The residents were helped by retired language teacher Catherine Bynon, who regularly visits her sister, Wyn, at Highfield Nursing Home.
On a recent visit she formed the idea of working with a couple of residents to put together a short performance of the Welsh poet’s Under Milk Wood as a way of celebrating the Diamond Jubilee.
Ms Bynon said: “Dylan Thomas died shortly after the Queen’s coronation. He died so young and like so many geniuses he fell to the evils of drink.
“Under Milk Wood is really a play for voices and not necessarily for the stage. I have worked with residents, Alan Hassall and Russell Mills, and we put together a short performance as a way of celebrating both Dylan Thomas’ masterpiece and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.”
Residents Alan Hassall, who hails from Manchester and Russell Mills, of Garden City, said they really enjoyed performing Under Milk Wood.
Mr Hassall said: “It’s been really good and something new. We always try and participate in anything that is going on as it helps to learn new things and keep active.”
Mr Mills added: “I have enjoyed learning it although it’s quite difficult. Catherine and the staff here have been really good and encouraged me.”
Pendine Park proprietor Mario Kreft said: “Drama is something we are looking at as a way of stimulating our residents and clients. Clearly Alun and Russell took great pleasure in performing Under Milkwood and they played their parts exceptionally well.
