Knitting a Union Flag themed scarf seemed to Lilian Surman, 92-year-old resident of Leeds care home Primrose Court, to be an ideal way to show how the London 2012 Olympics have inspired her.

Care provider Anchor, who operate ninety-seven care homes across the UK, have been looking at exciting and innovative ways for their residents to embrace the Olympic spirit, aided by dedicated activities co-ordinators.

At Primrose Court, activities have included exercise classes, themed quizzes and craft sessions, together with experience of many of the sports our Olympians have been performing so well in, including archery, canoeing, swimming and even javelin throwing. Ms Surman was keen to include her own personal touch, however, by knitting the red, white and blue scarf in tribute, saying:

“I decided to start a knitting project for the Olympic Games and thought a scarf with red, white and blue colours would be a good idea.

“I really enjoyed watching the Games with my fellow residents and I was surprised to see how many gold medals we won. Team GB did the country proud.”

The scarf itself took two months to knit and MS Surman has decided to donate to a local charity shop in Guiseley town centre.

Activities co-ordinator at Primrose Court, Tom Maidment, spoke of how residents had embraced the spirit of the Games: “The Olympics has been an incredibly stimulating spectacle for the residents, they have all had a lot of fun following the athletes and taking part in the themed activities.”
