HC-One chairman and care staff win at National Care Awards

The ‘Care Personality of the Year’ award has been won by Dr Chai Patel, chairman of HC-One, at the National Care Awards. HC-One is also celebrating as its staff from across the country have won gold and many others have received nominations.

Dr Chai Patel wins Care Personality of the Year at the National Care Awards

Dr Chai Patel was nominated for the award after successfully leading the transfer of a third of former Southern Cross homes into a new organisation – HC-One Ltd.

Following the 2011 collapse of Southern Cross, Dr Patel created HC-One to provide care for 10,000 residents, with around 15,000 employees in over 240 homes.

HC-One is the country’s newest and third largest provider of residential care for older people.

HC-One’s ambition is to provide the kindest care in the country. In its first year, all its care homes have been provided access to a new minibus, homes have been refurbished and big advances have been made in transforming the care for patients living with dementia.

Receiving the ‘Care Personality of the Year’ award, Dr Chai Patel said: “HC-One has had an extraordinary year due to the hard work and total commitment of each and every one of the staff in the homes, colleagues at Darlington and Leatherhead, and the management of the company as a whole.

“As a recognition of your contribution, it has therefore been my pleasure to accept this prestigious National Care Award on your behalf. Thank you to everyone and to your supportive families.”

HC-One managing director Pam Finnis said: “We are delighted Chai was awarded ‘Care Personality 2012’ at this year’s National Care Awards. We congratulate Chai on his successes in this first year of operation.

“At HC-One we are very proud of the great work carried out by our staff, and are very happy to see them receive such high praise and recognition.”

HC-One's Keith Bartlett won the Registered Care Home Manager Award

HC-One's Elvy Court Care Home manager Keith Bartlett and maintenance and housekeeping manager, Jim Halliday, both from Sittingbourne, Kent were also winners.

Mr Bartlett won won the Registered Care Home Manager Award which is given to 'the Registered Care Home Manager who has demonstrated a high level of expertise together with exceptional skills in managing the complex business of running a care home. A manager who shows vision in developing person centred care and supporting staff to meet the ever changing needs of the residents'.

Mr Halliday won the Ancillary Worker Award. This is 'an Award that recognises an excellent, person centred service to clients, demonstrating dignity and respect through ancillary services. Candidates have to be able to provide examples of initiatives and excellence in their work and pride themselves on outstanding service user feedback'.

Many other HC-One staff have received nominations at this year's National Care Awards for their outstanding work in their fields.

The National Care Awards showcase the best practice across the care sector.

‘The Care Personality of the Year’ is awarded to a person at senior management or chief executive level within any type of care organisation, private, public sector or voluntary, who has made the biggest single contribution to the long term sector in the past 12 months.
